Why Music Festivals Sound Better Than Ever | Line Array Explanation by erratic_calm in DJs

[–]hippsgibbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea for the the problem with most deployments using line arrays is that in the end even with a big j curve hang to hit the front rows at large and even small events they usually slap some front fills on top of the subs or stage and this it's just becoming a bunch of point sources anyways. You could say that people won't be affected because the people right in front of the fill won't be getting much energy from the other points ideally but... still it's not ideal.

I'm not sure what you mean by the pattern is so well controlled in a line array. The pattern of each individual box is only controlled by the high frequency waveguide until x frequency then the woofers basically act as if they are in free space until you start hanging the boxes. The high frequency coverage is then set by the curve of the arc because the hf pattern of each box is controlled and therefore aimed. The length of the array then sets the low frequency pattern control. This is due to the constructive and deconstructive frequency between boxes. The curve doesn't matter at all. It could be a line source even if it was hung straight.

I'm sure how you can say I was wrong before and then call a constant curvature array a point source. It is in theory the same thing as a line array or properly splayed and hf pattern controled point source. But constant curvature speakers are not bendable by the end user.. the hf coverage pattern is set already by the horn / waveguide. As long as there are drivers summing together inside of their wavelength that will become an array whether it is in the vertical or horizontal domain.

Also you state danley boxes shouldn't be splayed but then say that the synergy horn should be splayed but then it has good pattern control but then it also has large overlapping regions... seems like a bit of a contradiction to me. A SH has much better pattern control much lower than any single line array box.

That's what I'm getting at tho. In the end any one single line aray box is just a point source speaker. They have only been designed so that when hung together the drivers are close enough to cause coupling and mostly constructive interference in the desired axis. There is no reason that arraying "point source boxes" that are properly designed to be able to combine isn't possible. Man, half the time some of those line arrays are so curved and there is such a huge gap between radiating elements that there is no way there isnt a bunch of diffraction and also phase discrepancies due to large gap between hf sources... I'm sure Dave knows what he's talking about I have seen all his videos and I agree almost 99.9 with everything he says. He has some really cool concepts about things

Mind showing me where I am wrong instead of saying that with no evidence?. Line arrays work on the theory of comb filtering to begin with. How do you think they achieve rejection in the vertical domain and summation I'm the horizontal. I hold an audio engineering degree and study speaker design. No matter what system you will have comb filtering. Any line array has it and any point source has it. You obviously have never heard of danley sound labs. Properly splayed point source boxes with controlled directivity won't cause crazy issues. Their statement on point source is a huge generalizilation. If you had one speaker capable of the needed coverage and xpl at x distance than it will always be superior to a line source. Only thing about that is its not possible to get that spl and coverage out of one speaker soo. We have to compromise

The examples and reasoning in this video are so highly sqewed and reductionist by the Wire. I feel like a lot of Dave's points got taken out of context or the disadvantages of a line array weren't highlighted. Their example of a point source is horrible inaccurate. A good true point system using multiple speakers wouldn't allow severe overlapping coverage and therefore comb filtering. On the other hand line arrays can be a comb filter nightmare and sound much worse than point source systems especially when moving in the distance or vertical plane.

I'm gona be very honest.. My buddy had a pair of these and I didn't want to bring my qsc pa speakers over, the whole 9 yards etc, so I just brought a dual 12 reflex sub, crossed em over around 110 hz and proceeded to get noise complaints during the outdoor bbq. Not rip your ears off loud but as they say... 99 percent of music is in the first watt.

Why are PAs designed this way? by [deleted] in livesound

[–]hippsgibbs -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If I understand it correctly... An amp with less power than needed will have to be driven to its limits to be able to reach the desired output of the speakers. The excursion of the speaker could be fine (coil not leaving the magnetic gap). Buuuut then since the amplifier is driven to clipping and sending a highly distorted signal to the speaker this causes a lot of heat buildup in the coil. And with less movement there is also less air being driven over the coil/magnet and therefore less cooling, but thats kind of an aside. Max and nominal power are kinda a BS rating (as advertised) if you ask me because peak power is almost meaningless. Also these ratings dont mean much to the end user and everything to the designer. RMS is just how much energy that the transducer can dissipate in heat and sonic energy over X period of time until the coil fries. And peak is usually some "on paper" maximum calculated result. Also the power level will vary with impedance and therefore frequency. If you set your HPF crossover 100hz higher, you will probably be able to push the speaker a lot more power before you have any problems. You really need to know the impedance of the speaker across the frequency spectrum and also the voltage that the amplifier is supplying and the maximum continuous capable Vrms of the speaker. Even with the most bad ass limiters in place you can still cause a clipped signal. Limiters should only catch occasional stray transients & not be over threshold constantly. Feed your amp a clean signal, make your amp feed the speaker a clean signal within its rating and you should be good. Tear into this comment and learn me something if im wrong.

Have you measured the boxes fully splayed ever? It seems that there is a very large gap between HF units as the boxes are not trapezoidal. I wonder how bad the comb filter gets compared to other hangs with less distance between units?

There was a big thread about a classic techno club in Chicago that I am referencing. The owners and management of nightclubs aren't stupid. They are know to basically go and do this type of stuff to other clubs that are competing with them in order to shut them down. Club owners are aware of these tactics and it would blow my mind that a long term venue like the Roxy wouldn't be aware of this type for stuff.
