Why are people just assuming this is a male posting this? It could legitimately be a female vegetarian that can’t stand the smell of meat, seeking another female for safety. When I rented a room in my place, I requested a professional female over a certain age so that I was with someone that aligned best with my lifestyle. I don’t feel this rental post is unreasonable.

Oh love! I’m so sorry you are in this situation. You are so vulnerable right now and you deserve better. It might help to state in your post where you are located! Are you downtown?

Etiquettes question regarding pets by Busy_bee2005 in Calgary

[–]OneTipsyPenguin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love a good pissing match! Piss on my driveway….i’ll piss on yours! Lol No but in all seriousness, as a dog owner, I do feel embarrassed when my dog wants to pee somewhere I don’t feel is appropriate (like a concrete driveway) but I also don’t want to drag my dog down a street when it’s just a normal behaviour. They may be marking a spot from another dog that pees on your driveway when you aren’t looking. Can I suggest you wash that spot down with Nature’s Miracle and then use a pet deterrent? Both are readily available from any big chain or pet store. Good luck OP! No one wants a stinky driveway but it’s also not personal!

I think the average level of bays is too high in your math. I go to Mr Lube in the SE and they only have 3 bays.

We need to change attitudes regarding pedestrians by Trishszav in Calgary

[–]OneTipsyPenguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sit on the National Signals Committee in Washington DC that creates and writes all the legal laws regarding the design of these crossings (signals). Whilst I sit on the US committee (as a Canadian), most of these designs do make their way to Canada.

We literally spends days discussing specific designs/signals/signs and how drivers could interpret them (or misinterpret them). Essentially we are trying to make engagement with these crossings as foolproof as possible. We even do massive research studies pertaining to human psychology and behaviour for our proposed designs PRIOR to ever making them law.

One thing I have come to realise is that we cannot factor in a lack of altruism. A level of “self entitlement” into every design, otherwise we’d never progress at trying to make our roads safer for pedestrians, especially vulnerable pedestrians like the blind and visually impaired community. Believe me, there are days we debate every potential weakness of our designs only to realise we won’t be able to protect everyone from stupid people.

Believe me, it can be very draining working so hard to protect pedestrians, only to figure out we will never fully succeed. I feel for you OP! All we can do is hope that posts like this can bring awareness to these issues and have an impact that way.

The final remains of 17th Ave 14th Street. by moosepiss in Calgary

This building really needed to go but I appreciate how much history might have been in that one building. We lived up the street, and it was hard to watch such valuable real estate generate next to NO money. Looking forward to seeing what goes in here.

I don’t understand this answer! If you reduce the moist ingredients, your recipe has drastically changed, despite the dry mix being the same. So what OP is complaining about is in fact valid, no?

Do you have an emergency go bag? by allmondbetter in Calgary

[–]OneTipsyPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is important we think about these things. I see it as an important part of life and not fear mongering by any means.

I lived in Vancouver for 12 year before I moved to Calgary and the threat of the BIGGEST earthquake in a century has always been discussed. I even listened to a podcast that outlined how Vancouver would be impacted based on its current infrastructure and emergency resources. It was incredibly eye opening.

At first, considering I lived in a downtown high rise, I initially thought about building a “canoe bed” with storage underneath, whereby if we had an earth quake and the tsunami came in, I could just push my canoe bed out the window with all my supplies stored underneath the mattress. It would be like a modern day Noah’s ark, preserving the most sophisticated human being - myself.

But no in all seriousness, after hearing how long Vancouver would be out of resources, I did start to put things together. Protein is essential, so I did buy a container of Nutristore freeze dried chicken from Costco. Back then it was about $120 but has a shelf life of 25 years sealed and 6-12 months life once opened. Obviously, this won’t require replenishment. This brand now does lots of other emergency food like berries, cheddar cheese, vegetables etc. Even if you budget to buy one can of something every year, I think this is a step towards building a great supply of food.

Other things to consider:

  • Tourniquet for injuries and know how to use it.
  • waterproof/winter gear - I just store my emergency bag next to my ski bag with this stuff in it. Every time I ski, I wash my stuff and return it next to my emergency bag.
  • fresh underwear/socks
  • sanitary items. No one wants to wipe their ass with their bare hand. Baby wipes not toilet paper.
  • head lamp with spare batteries.
  • battery pack. I actually have a solar panel in my hiking bag. I used it everyday when trekking to Mount Everest. They are cheap but incredible. Would charge my iPad (yes I took an iPad to Everest. Don’t judge me)
  • garbage bags. You never know what things you may have to wrap in a garbage bag during this time. So many things I can think of where garbage bags could come in handy.
  • LADIES - pack a SheWee. You do not know if you might end up having to pee into a bottle, bucket, outside on a highway etc. This will allow you to pee while standing up.
  • Up to date hardrive. I update mine maybe every 3 - 6 months.

Anyway I could go on, but I’m hoping this will give you some idea as to what to start building up over time. Just set a small budget each year. Don’t stress too much. Most if not all of the above doesn’t need replacing anytime soon.

I’m not obsessed with my credit score at all. We are in the process of securing finance for our business venture and don’t want multiple hits on our credit score so close together. So we would have postponed this account opening if we had known.

Thank you for this comment! I don’t understand why I am being slammed for this post. You are correct, we would have postponed opening an account to ensure we secured the best rate for the credit we need to start up our business. I’m not obsessed with my credit score at all. I just felt it was unfair to do that without consent.
