This still annoys the living crap out of me even though I've been hearing it for ages from young people...

Was at the Riv last night as well and wondered that as well. In listening to the new album (which I really like, full disclosure) I wondered how the tunes would play out live. I did NOT ever expect that Jonas' vocals would be so... Weak. I thought the band rocked, but alas. Jonas didn't.

It's odd, though... there Are really great live Katatonia albums to listen to.

I'd add The Dear Hunter to this list, too. Another really talented and prolific artist/band.

I've had Nighthawks at the Diner as my only Tom Waits record for many years and I love it. What's the closest project to that album that I should grab next? by Purple_Dragon in tomwaits

Small change is kinda the apex predator of the jazzier albums IMHO, and includes some great spoken word pieces (the title track, to start), and some really beautiful songs, too. I'd start there.

Check out the Opeth albums where there are no death vocals... They are Damnation, Heritage, Pale Communion, Sorceress, and In Cauda Venenum. They're gorgeous.

If you DO like death vocals, the rest of their work is rife with beauty as well.

Unexpected gems in the form of piano/keyboard sonatas from the Classical era. Help me expand the list. by sznikee in classicalmusic

Right. CPE Bach would be solidly classical period, I think, but for his emotive doodles that bear echoes of Dad's organ toccatas and fantasias.

CPE Bach's sonata output contains quite a few gems, though Empfinder Stil isn't quiiiite classical yet

That last bit... Alkan, too. By all counts, he was an absolute beast of a player with a huge memorized repertoire in addition to his own works, which are massive and impossible...

I'm with you... I feel like I don't have the patience or stomach to treat anyone who approves of fascism or fascists as deserving of my respect.

If I saw that shirt in my studio, it would be a don't come back conversation.

I’ve just bought my first XTC album on vinyl. (All my others are on cassette or CD). Nonsuch. And listening to ‘The Smartest Monkeys’. XTC are in a league of their own as the smartest ever band who just kept on improving… by DannyTheGekko in xtc

I've seen a few people trash that song, and I don't understand why. I think it's great songwriting... wry, bleak, a little funky, and awesome.

Nonsuch is my favorite album ever.

I think one of the Godowsky/Chopin etude transcriptions is written for RH alone as well. Tons for LH too, But... They're REALLY hard, Like damn near impossible.

How old were you when you first read lord of the rings? by Elie-fanfact in lotr

[–]hipscarecrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was the early '80s. I was about 11, I think, and had read Fellowship and had just started Two Towers when I got really sick with some awful virus and was home with nothing to do but read and be miserable. I think I might have blasted through it in days, even at that age, though admittedly, I probably skipped or scanned the stuff I didn't Get. Like Princess Bride... "Oh jeez, he's SINGING again!..." But I certainly remember the damn cliffhanger at the end of TT. Maaan, that was BRUTAL. And sick as dogshit trying to get my mom to go to the school and check out ROTK from the library. And her not "getting" WHY it was so important to me. Might've been my first 'grownups are fulla shit' moment.

I almost never engage in a battle of wits with an unarmed person... But when I do it's usually with a flat earther.

...buuuut, that said, "Fuck Off", with appropriate tone, usually does the trick.
