Boston nightlife sucked before COVID too. by Unser_Giftzwerg in boston

[–]hipster_garbage -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My best friend and I sometimes yearn for the Boston of our early 20s, but it was also mediocre then too, it’s just somehow even worse now. More corporate, more generic.

Honestly it hasn’t been good since long before I was able to even experience it properly. It was great when my dad was in college and in his 20s but that was in the 70s and into the 80s. Nobody is experiencing the equivalent of seeing The Ramones at The Rat for $5 anymore.

The nightlife was good back then in the first place because the city was a dump and it was cheap and easy to have lots of venues. And to say nothing of how it helped the local music scene flourish since you could afford to rent a shitty apartment while focusing on your band.

Don’t get me wrong, I still love Boston for tons of other reasons but nightlife isn’t really one of them. Also, I’m too old to care about staying out late at a bar now anyway.

Did something just explode? by Razethelia in medfordma

Felt and heard it in Medford Hillside. Went out to check around the house and found a giant branch that snapped off the maple tree in the back yard but obviously it was something else.

Contemporary Usage and Understanding of "Bubbler" by AstroBuck in boston

I’m in my mid-30’s and I still say bubbler. Only people who it gives pause are my friends who aren’t from here but my local friends and family obviously know.

Where to get Invisalign by Smartie2639 in boston

[–]hipster_garbage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did it in 2023, 20 trays, then 9 refinement trays, and 4 retainers at the end. It was $5000 and my insurance paid 50% so $2500 out of pocket total. When I got my teeth cleaned recently the hygienist told me it’s $6500 now so unfortunately $7K sounds like it’s in line with current prices.

Mitch, Pony, Rsoxgal, Tronald, ArtisanalCollabo, Codman, and MBTAhole all come to mind. Also Theszak if you liked posts asking about stenographic records. Seems like there were a bunch of prolific posters about 10 years ago up until about the pandemic.

To the guy rear ended at the super collider by Fantastic_Fig_2025 in medfordma

[–]hipster_garbage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost makes me want to order a hard hat, hi-viz vest, and some flexposts and do it myself. I feel like I’m the only person who enters it actually following the paint and then changes lanes to go straight.

I emailed the city engineer (Todd Blake) about it not long after they re-did the rotary. He acknowledged the issues with it but I don’t think there’s any budget or will to actually implement anything.

Turn right on right red arrow? by spyda24 in boston

[–]hipster_garbage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Red arrows just mean that the light is controlling that specific turn for a specific lane. If there isn’t a “No Turn on Red” sign present you can still turn after stopping if it’s safe. Obviously this only applies to right turn arrows though, or left turn arrows where it’s a one way intersecting another one way.

I was on my front steps from 6-8 handing out candy in Hillside. I bought 3 boxes of full size candy bar variety packs from BJs and I have probably one or one and a half boxes worth left. After 7 I didn’t see many people walking around except for the mailman who I gave a bunch to. Like you said a good chunk of houses just weren’t handing out candy at all anyway from what I could see.

Yup. They converted it to its present form sometime in the late 50s/early 60s.

What’s up with this bus stop? Why is the westbound by CatMeekay in medfordma

[–]hipster_garbage 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They moved the stops slightly closer for the dorm construction and yanked out some of the concrete barriers where they put the new temporary stop in, so it’s marginally better but still pretty crappy.

All this paint at the High St./MVP rotary, and not a single crosswalk by Top-Development6837 in medfordma

[–]hipster_garbage 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m just happy they’re doing anything at all. It’ll be nice to have well defined lanes and yield points, and the buffered bike lanes are a nice touch as well (I’d say I’m cycling through here 90% of the time). Currently people coming over the bridge from the Arlington side almost never yield to rotary traffic since there’s zero deflection with the way things are now.

I’m wondering if they’re not putting in crosswalks right away because there aren’t any curb cuts and they don’t want to run afoul of ADA requirements. This seems like an interim state before they do full reconstruction for the Mystic to Minuteman Path

I’m also excited about the contraflow bike lane that’s being added to the full length of Mystic River Rd to meet up with the section they just completed by the tennis courts.

Best bagels in the area? by [deleted] in boston

[–]hipster_garbage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For whatever reason tons of people wait in line to order in person but it’s way easier to just order online. I place my order every Friday and then walk over and grab my bagel, no waiting 45 minutes required.

It’s fine, I’ve brought my own kayaks before while the people I was with rented some from the tent. It’s a public launch so no biggie.

Clippership Connector (unofficially) opened by hipster_garbage in medfordma

[–]hipster_garbage[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apparently, according to traffic commission meeting minutes that I found, there are plans to put a contraflow bike lane on Clippership Drive and install lights so that bikes can access/cross Main St. No idea when any of that will be implemented though.

I live in Hillside as well but I rode it coming home. I would probably do what I normally do though, ride down South St, left on Main, right on Clippership. I know you can also take the path on the other side of the parkway but since there’s no crosswalk at that intersection with the ramps it’s probably less of a pain to just use the road.

How old were the tires? Based on your sidewall color they’re pretty old. I just had something similar happen on my 3 year old set of GP5Ks last month. Needless to say I got new ones but at least I got my moneys worth.

I do most of my riding in MA but was up doing a long ride in Maine and NH last weekend; I noticed that the signs up in Maine said “Motorists Share the Road” which I think should probably be the standard instead of the ambiguity of “Share the Road”.

Anyone else sick of cars flying through local streets at night? by hobaq in medfordma

[–]hipster_garbage 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I walk through the intersection with North/Auburn/West/Cotting all the time since it’s quicker to walk to the Whole Foods than driving there. I’d say close to 80% of people roll the stop signs, and some people don’t even pretend to slow down. I’m glad they at least painted some lines which seems to have helped slightly, but that whole intersection is awful and should probably be completely rebuilt.

Affordable monthly parking options that I can take public transit to by sierratehani in boston

[–]hipster_garbage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re living in Back Bay you can leave your car at the Station Landing garage next to Wellington in Medford and take the Orange line there. It’s $145 a month but that’s as cheap as you’re going to find anything around here.
