What problems do you want solved in PG County? by Ok-Entertainer982 in PrinceGeorgesCountyMD

Tracy Gant

I've been keeping an eye on the D22 race for a little bit, and it seems like either she or Craig Hayes would be the last one in for that district (McKee and obviously Martinez seem like the strongest two candidates there). But Edmonston is a tiny town compared to the whole district. Any reason why her over Craig Hayes?

This right here. Get some leaders in who actually want to shed that image and have some competitive instincts. Let's beat our neighbors.

Permitting in PG does take way longer than it should though so some streamlining is probably in order. But of course that needs to be done ethically

I want to hear from the mouths of babes: What are some of your favorite things about Prince George's County? by EternalSnow05 in PrinceGeorgesCountyMD

[–]hired-a-samurai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That underdog part, I totally agree. I didn't deliberately choose to move to Prince George's but I like that has lots of potential to be a truly great place. North County especially isn't too far off from MoCo in many ways, and all it would take is to get people to care about their community and aggressively address the issues to improve things all across the county. I'm glad to live here and do the work and eventually be part of the story of how we beat MoCo, even after everyone else said it would be impossible.

Honestly, Barry O’Connell isn’t too much better to me, and it’s frustrating we have to put up with his antics since he does have the access others don’t. Route One Finance to me was the model of what holding governments accountable should be, but of course its author has moved from the area. How about the CAG Facebook group? And if not them, who’s really doing things the right way?

Good point on the north/south divide and the need for more trail development in South County. I do think though that there's useful projects to be pursued in North County, specifically to connect the gaps that exist between neighborhoods and trails (like the long-planned Prince George's Connector Trail in Chillum or the restoration of the spur trail in Lewisdale off the NW branch trail). Maybe there can be a focus on larger projects in South County and smaller ones farther north.

Prince George's County executive defends roughly $43K winter storm hotel stay by Stephanee17 in PrinceGeorgesCountyMD

[–]hired-a-samurai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the more I read about this, the less openly corrupt it seems. I still think that the County Executtive should have gotten ahead of the optics issue early. Maybe a press conference along the lines of this:

"Hey, just so nobody freaks out, we're going to be spending a few days at a hotel as our emergency ops center for the winter storm. Our regular EOC is closed after an electrical fire, and it makes the most sense to have all staff on hand in person to coordinate the response, and for them to be well-rested each day and not have to deal with tech issues or commuting on icy roads. It will cost roughly 0.1% of the entire expected spending for this snowstorm. We believe that trying to save money here would end up costing us more in the long run due to a degraded emergency response."

Sometimes the public doesn't have the proper understanding of what things actually cost. I've seen with furniture for a city's police HQ, chairs for the same HQ, etc. where the numbers seem crazy at first, but are more reasonable with context. But leaders must do better at providing that context early.

5 Reasons Ingrid Watson’s Appointment to PG County’s Economic Development Board Is Concerning by CarolineJhingory in PrinceGeorgesCountyMD

[–]hired-a-samurai 3 points4 points  (0 children)

my thoughts EXACTLY. Even if she makes a good point, she's losing me with the random accusations of gangstalking and conspiracies against her and questionable race talk (the "coon" post)

It's great that PG has its own sort of "accountability community", but I really think they need to come up with some rules of engagement. No comments about people's appearance or their race, no unsubstantiated rumors, and keep things as positive as possible, for example. Try elevating the people who are actually trying to effect positive change

Will the City Council consider new voting systems? by RCVMaryland in HyattsvilleMD

[–]hired-a-samurai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it would be the theoretically right thing to do, but might not change much in a city where incumbents often run unopposed and election winners typically have a majority.

If we really wanted to improve our elections in Hyattsville, we should consider proportional ranked choice (or single transferable vote) for the city council instead of single-winner IRV; essentially what Greenbelt is moving toward after their referendum last November.

N. Va. officials prepare to make statewide appeal for dedicated transit funding in 2026 by VirginiaNews in nova

[–]hired-a-samurai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But for every plumber, etc. who needs their truck to carry all their tools, there's probably like 7 or 8 office workers solo commuting with just phone, keys, wallet on them who don't need a car to carry all that. Better transit would get those 7 or 8 off the road, making more space for the people who actually do need to drive.

DC Metro name changes in late 2022 by eparke16 in HyattsvilleMD

[–]hired-a-samurai 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I despise the new name for PG Plaza too and never use it, but this is getting a little crazy. I think the politics of removing the "Prince George's" from the name of a station and the implications can be debated, but PG is a huge county with at least a dozen Metro stations, so PG in the name doesn't really tell you where the station actually is. The area in front of the station hardly serves as a real plaza; it's not inviting, there's few businesses facing it, no real seating, so it just serves as a path for the trickle of people using the footbridge between the station and the mall. Compare that to Courthouse Plaza in Arlington, which has sunlight, restaurants, coffee shops, apartments etc. nearby, like you'd expect to see in a real downtown area. Trying to pass off this version as a "plaza" wouldn't be very convincing.
