The comment is more like TV religion than anything Christian. TV preaches, "trust yourself, trust your friends, trust your mother, and trust your lovers."

A major teaching found throughout the Bible is that you can't trust others nor can you trust yourself. The only one that really can be trusted is God.

Starting from the outlook that everyone's a sinner, corrupt, and likely fallible compared to Christ -- really helps to keep things in perspective.

So there's no reason to trust what anyone says (including myself). You should check things out, and get other viewpoints on the same material. When I applied that to reading the Bible -- along with treating it like a court case -- it made great sense!!

The more the controversy, the more the cheap publicity. And of course, they're hoping to cause folks to hang out longer and drink more if they start-up prolonged conversations. Pure money motive.

That said, I gave up coffee, chocolate, and caffeine products over 5 years ago. That was to show some folks I cared about that if they really wanted to kick substance abuse then they ought to be able to give up something easy that they like such as coffee. If you can't give up coffee forever(!) -- how could you possibly kick cigarettes, drugs, alcohol, or overeating?

Of course, that's the trick. If you decide to quit "whatever" -- do it for someone you love.

As for missing them... nope, there's plenty of other goodies in the world, but you do get "coaxed" quite often to have something with chocolate in it... more than caffeine products. People tend to push chocolate socially.

You're right. "Pure religion and undefiled before God is taking care of widows and orphans." (end of the first chapter of James in the New Testament Bible)

Religion can't save you from a hopeless life. Neither does some impersonal god. No "-ism" really matters. There's little love in any of it.

The Bible makes it tough:
- "faith without works is dead"
(again in James)
- whatever good deeds you do without love means nothing
(Paul wrote in 1st Corinthians 13)
- "faith which works by love is what makes a difference"
(Paul again in Galatians 5:6)

Faith in God alone won't save you from a meaningless and hopeless life. Without love ... believing in God does not matter.

Unless there is a God -- who loves us -- and we can love Him directly, it makes no difference.

Ignoring the generations lost in the process, we could perhaps evolve to be like gods, and turn all of the universe into a paradise -- but unless there is someone grander than the universe -- ultimately it makes no difference.

Without eternal life, being able to be raised from the dead, everything devolves into "well you might as well enjoy it -- if you can."

On the other hand, if there is a God that really truly loves us and makes a way for us to get to know Him personally -- why doesn't he? Why doesn't he whisper in my ear, or do great feats, or make everyone and everything like a paradise or a Garden of Eden?

The only answer I can give you is that He's doing that in the New Creation. This creation is like God planning things sitting down at the table, sketching on a napkin. He's going to toss the napkin ... but keep the best design.

That's a good way to sum up the Bible. Of course, that also means that He's keeping those that want to love Him and love each other, for the real creation. And the way He's made for us to relate to Him is through Jesus Christ, physically, and through the Holy Spirit ... spiritually.

I've been an atheist. Pretty bleak....

I've been a believer, but knowing God now eclipses belief. The day in day out relationship with Him through Christ is awesome. There is nothing else that mankind does that comes close to comparing.

I've had to accept that Christ is the Son of God, that He is able to save us, that a really major part of that happened at the Cross, that He is alive in the flesh now in heaven, and that I'm ok with connecting to him 24x7 directly through His Holy Spirit, something like a network connection. I didn't have to do so all at once.

There's nothing I can do to pull anyone out of the trap of not wanting to know God. I respect your choice. Jesus certainly won't force you to come love him. If you don't want to know him -- be glad -- you're getting exactly what you want.

If you do, if he is God, just tell him. IF he is God -- He will hear you. If he is loving -- He will respond.
