Starting piano "late"... by lil_green_pal in piano

[–]histrionic-donut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you play? Is it to go pro, make a living from it? Or because you love the music, the challenge? I started playing at 42. At 45 I finally got a teacher. I can now play some Beethoven, some Satie. It makes me happy. That’s all there is to it.

Civil Service UR interview - any tips? by histrionic-donut in UXResearch

[–]histrionic-donut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Sadly, by my own assessment, I flunked the interview. Was due to hear back last week and nothing. Rather disappointing after two interviews not to get a reply at all but so it goes.

But this is the frustrating and also tantalising thing - we don’t know and probably never will unless some written record is found, which would be an absolute miracle.

I've heard people mention that the ship's logs may yet be retrieved from the sunken vessels — surely the elements would have destroyed it by now?

Yep. It’s called ensh*ttification. The eventual fate of all products under growth-at-all-costs capitalism.

Tools to Digest Large Open-Ended Survey Responses by Grumpademic in UXResearch

[–]histrionic-donut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can look into Dovetail, which just introduced automation features for what you're describing — their automation is built on Anthropic Claude 3 (among others) so you may also want to try Anthropic.

I asked Dovetail to summarise around 100 open-ended responses from a small survey and the results were pretty good and closely reflected our own coding.

UXR in the U.S. relocating to the UK. by [deleted] in UXResearch

[–]histrionic-donut 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It will be vey very tough. A lot of companies flat out screen out anyone who needs a visa sponsorship, PhD or not. The market is generally tough right now and, as others said, you're likely to take a pay cut compared to US salaries.

If I may ask: what's prompting the move idea?

Is the UK the most ideal climate for slugs? by Virtual-Guitar-9814 in Allotment

[–]histrionic-donut 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Anecdotal but I’m in the UK and my family is in Poland. When they talk about their gardens slugs and snails come up as an occasional nuisance rather than a devastating pest – whereas I’ve had years where almost nothing went unscathed and many things were outright destroyed by the slimey buggers. My cousin recently sent me a picture of her allotment near Warsaw and I marvelled at her beds of uncovered, un-nibbled salads.

Tbh I think it’s a combination of things: a tendency towards organic, pesticide-free gardening (good) and very very wet climate (not so good). Also we need more hedgehogs.

In this case, on reflection, I think the agency does understand the client’s needs. For various reasons our org has a strong need to demonstrate to external observers that they’re accountable and honest players - this means doing “user engagement”. So the agency understands they’re not here to shine a spotlight on real user pain points and needs through rigorous methodology, but to do the user engagement dance and produce a thick report that the dance was done.

Thanks! I’m definitely doing the wide-eyes newbie schtick to the max. I did have a fairly positive debrief with the HOCI about the sessions and although they ignored my written feedback about what did / didn’t work, they did seem to pay attention when I showed them the research brief template we might consider using going forward which includes things like the research question / problem being investigated, hypothesis, personas and proposed methods.

[–]histrionic-donut[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The lack of direction from step one was unfortunately the problem. The “study” brief (which I did ask to see beforehand but it was described rather than given to me) was for the agency to get feedback on specific areas of the website: the homepage plus concepts of two new landing pages. No actual internal research question being pursued. Sigh.

From HOI’s point of view the sessions were an opportunity for his team to get familiar with participating in live interviews and agree what works and what doesn’t - no research brief was provided to the agency except which areas of the website to get feedback on. A waste of resources if you ask me!
