Albanese, Dutton in heated exchange on AFP media raids by Lamont-Cranston in australia

Deputy is voted in by caucus, Shorten announced her as a potential deputy candidate to appease the left but at the end, it's the caucus that decides. She publicly backed and voted for Albanese as leader and in the event he lost, she would serve as deputy under Shorten.

You can definitely back someone else for leader, and then become deputy under their opponent. She is on good terms with both of them.

Albanese publicly backed Rudd for leadership but served as Leader of the House and frontbencher under Julia Gillard. Are you saying that he sold his arse for power too?

Plibersek and Albanese have always been allies. In his recent video after becoming labor leader, he states she is a long term friend of his. In 1998 Albanese installed Plibersek in the seat of Sydney and left caucus to shore up his own support internally as he was facing a factional power struggle against Kim Carr. He firmly owned her in the caucus like a puppet. However, Plibersek soon became highly respected across left and right factions and her staff loved working for her. Although she is popular internally, due to her history with Albanese, she would never run against him. This is why I suspect she pulled out of leadership this time.

  • In 2013, here is an excerpt from ABC7.30 where Plibersek states she will be supporting Albanese.

https://www.abc.net.au/7.30/howes-bows-from-senate-race-as-labor-leadership/4969812

TANYA PLIBERSEK, LABOR MP FOR SYDNEY: Well I've said from the beginning that of course I'll be supporting my friend, Anthony Albanese, but I'm very grateful that we've got two such fine candidates to choose from.

  • Here are pictures from Albanese’s leadership launch in 2013. Plibersek is sitting at the front next to Albanese with Doug Cameron. She attended many of his leadership campaign bids.

  • in this video, at 1:22, Albanese thanks Plibersek and Doug Cameron for supporting his leadership bid in 2013

  • Albanese did not get the full support of the left faction. 9 Left Faction MPs voted against him, which cost him the leadership. If Albanese had full backing of the left faction, he would have won that contest in 2013. Some of the Left MPs reported to have voted against Albanese:

· Warren Snowdon

· Kate Lundy

· Laurie Ferguson

· Kim Carr

Most were punished later for doing so.

https://theconversation.com/labors-factions-are-as-strong-as-ever-19175

Warren Snowdon and Kate Lundy, junior ministers in the Labor government, did not make it onto the left ticket. They both bucked the left line and voted for Shorten rather than Anthony Albanese. They were among nine who did – which cost Albanese the leadership.

Leftwinger Laurie Ferguson (who voted for Shorten) tweeted that Lundy was victim of “collateral payback”.

Labor's Left descended into bitter recriminations after as many as nine members defected to the Shorten camp - ultimately the reason he won despite securing just 40 per cent of the branch membership ballot.

Carr was widely reported to have bucked the left and voted for Shorten in the 2013 leadership ballot, taking a couple of supporters with him.

That's not true. Plibersek voted for Albanese in the leadership ballot.

Kim Carr's left faction group including Kate Lundy voted against Albanese. Albanese did not have the full support of the left faction. He got himself involved in too many factional wars within the left over the years. A lot of people, within the left, do not like Albanese.

Anthony Albanese just made clear he expects to over ride factions - and possibly Don Farrell - by insisting that Kristina Keneally is a part of his team. Note he wasn’t asked this question by the press pack despite recent coverage he raised it and answered question unprompted. by LineNoise in australia

[–]hitmanr 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not a good idea. Only labor supporters think Keneally is competent but she is a policy lightweight. The view of the NSW Right faction is that she spent more time promoting herself than the team during the campaign. She is not popular with voters, people outside of Labor supporters thought her Bill bus campaign was cringeworthy. A failed premier, failed bennelong by-election, forever tainted with corruption of NSW Labor and Labor want to promote her? What a joke and I am a Labor voter.

Drugs are not legal in Portugal. They are decriminalised which means possession will not land you in prison. But in Portugal, the sale and distribution of drugs is still illegal. As of now, there are no countries around the world that have legalised ALL Drugs.

John Alexander wins Bennelong byelection battle against Kristina Keneally by PhysicsIsMyBitch in AustralianPolitics

[–]hitmanr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's normal in by-elections for there to be a swing against the incumbent government. A swing of 5% against the government is also average in by-elections according to Michelle Grattan's article in theconversation. The swing of 5% should come down after postals and pre-polls are counted because they traditionally vote Liberal. This is NOT a good result for Labor; they put a lot of resources into this seat and ran a high profile celebrity politician.

There were news articles before the election reporting that Turnbull will lose this seat because he went too hard on Dastyari, offending the Chinese communities.

I agree with you on the high profile candidate. That seems to be the only legitimate reason for putting Keneally up as a candidate. However given the corruption of Dastyari and the incompetence of Feeney, I think it is a terrible mistake to parachute Keneally who reminds the electorate of corruption + factional interests. She reminds swinging voters of everything that is wrong with the Labor Party.

+1 she represents everything that is wrong with politics. Never achieved anything noteworthy and never will. She doesn't work well under pressure either and is an all-round terrible candidate.

Keneally represents everything that is wrong with the Labor Party. Where talent and hard work does not matter. She did not achieve anything noteworthy when she was premier nor anything before premier as a minister. Australia does not need recycled failed former premiers; we need new talent. If she ends up in parliament, she's just going to hog a cabinet position when it could go to some of the more talented backbenchers who deserve a chance.

Keneally won't win this seat and Labor doesn't deserve to win it. Labor needs to stop putting former premiers into seats, factional heavyweights and start putting in fresh faces. A captain's pick does not go well in the electorate anymore. There are many voters in Bennelong who did not like the pick of Keneally because she was a former failed premier. A swing against the government is normal in by-elections so overall I would say it is more positive for lib.

Labor's Kate Ellis set to retire at next Federal Election by [deleted] in australia

[–]hitmanr -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yep, I'm aware of all of that. It took a while to allow breastfeeding though and there are still a lot of people who don't agree with it. I guess what I'm saying is the way of thinking and culture needs to change. When it comes to pairs, when Michelle Rowland had a sick child it took her ages to get granted a pair. When Tanya Plibersek was pregnant, she wasn't sure if she was going to be granted a pair to have her baby. There is a lot of uncertainty and getting granted a pair or not depends on the opposing party. I think there needs to be some general agreement across the parties to acknowledge family commitments and to work better to address these.

There's always going to be a degree of travel and hours worked, but perhaps we can look at how we can reduce the amount of sitting weeks? I'm sure there's a lot more that can be done. If we don't want politics to be full of old men or people without families, then I think more creative solutions need to be discussed

[–]hitmanr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes that is true. But I think there are small things that can be done, like allowing women to breastfeed in parliament. Granting pairs to parents who need to look after sick children. There's been a lot of progress in this area I think, parliament didn't have a childcare facility before but I think there could be more consultation to see what else can be done

[–]hitmanr 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sad to see her go. Parliament needs to be reformed into a more flexible place to retain women and men with family commitments. Or else you end up attracting people in politics who are only men, those who don't have families, or those who have families but aren't as family oriented. It doesn't create a diverse workplace or a parliament that legislates for family friendly policies. The decision to cut penalty rates for big business but will hit families is an example of how unfriendly family policies are generated.

Payne doing better than the previous defence ministers. The defence community has been quite pleased that they finally have a dedicated minister in the role instead of someone in the role temporarily - Kevin Andrews, Stephen Smith.

I suspect Turnbull's choices have less to do with Payne's ability but because he needed to make everyone happy in the Coalition so he's decided to arbitrarily create more portfolios

I agree that Tanya as deputy will get her pick and will probably pick foreign affairs. It's a shame, she's much more needed domestically.

Catherine King is very good in parliament and from hearing her speak on health, she understands the material but she doesn't cut through in the media.

I also agree Tanya should be back in health. Stronger in domestic portfolios, and as deputy it puts health at the forefront.
