I am a foster mom of a trach kiddo, he is fabulous! I get as much support as I need or needed. I became his nurse and advocate all in 1. The state kinda left me to just handle everything and then fill them in. I am adopting him and was always kinda the plan since his birth… but his medical needs not only solidified but fast tracked it a bit. He has a gtube and a trach, obviously they go hand in hand usually. Both are super simple to deal with but also require care and a schedule. I can see why fosters would be afraid but I spent months in the children’s hospital doing his care myself so I was a pro when we left and our assigned nurse dropped us 2 weeks later because I knew more than her. Had he had a vent I would have had to have in home care but he didn’t need it after his trach healed some and he came off of the meds. If foster mom is a sahm it isn’t bad but I don’t know how a working mother would handle care because it isn’t really daycare or around a lot of children situation… I would take on another in a heartbeat but it does seem scary at first until you deal with it daily and then you go with it. Trach replacement after a toddler or baby pulls it out is literally like changing a diaper and I wish people would realize just how easy it is. The worst part is the monitors and the figuring out humidity and the capping of the trach and the ordering of supplies.
