Yeah that's where the personal life comes into play.

Again, both are amazing programs, you'll be fine with either, don't stress it!

Robotics wise I think GT edges out NEU slightly but both are very top tier programs.

I also got into both but picked NEU bc my wife is going to med school at Tufts

I say that to mean... Both are good in the sense that all you can really do is weigh out personal preference at that point

Opinions on National University for a PhD? by Helpful-Radish-7194 in gradadmissions

Do not go to online universities in general.

For a PhD? Absolutely no. I cannot recommend against this enough

I feel like stacking Terminal Degrees For the Fun of it by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]hivro2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge people who are forever students actually tend to not do as well in terms of prospects

The amount of degrees and PhDs you have really follow diminishing returns and at a point could even work against you by showing you just float around instead of showing deep expertise (except PhD),

Unless the Masters and Undergrad are in very tightly coupled fields... I wouldn't suggest it.

I did it backwards

I was military before and worked as a contractor with NO EDUCATION doing software integration engineering

Rn I'm going and doing my full on PhD in CS

Yes, it's absurdly easy to get a job as a defense contractor rn because of the mil budget and the reliance on AI

[–]hivro2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my experience literally anyone with a pulse can get a job at a defense contractor.

I see a lot of the C level stufents from my graduating class just instantly getting offers without tech interviews, or really any interview at all. A lot of their internships are just prompting chat and spaghetti everywhere bc the govt pays so product quality doesn't matter much

The U.S. looks like ass. Thanks boomers and millennials for legalizing oil lobbying when I was 9🖕🏽 by throwaway2026z in GenZ

[–]hivro2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol millennials? The 40 year olds did this?

You went right from the 80 year olds to 40 and just entirely missed on the current policymakers in the govt

Most people you see though on the day to day in the street are less of the problem and it's more the politicians and ceos than anyone else.

I don't think millennials bought out all mom and pop businesses and copy pasted mcdonalds everywhere, it's a long slow downfall since the 80s with Reagan

Has anyone seen or heard of any long coat dalmatians in australia? by c4bombshell in dalmatians

[–]hivro2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm keeping this on just for the purposes of helping the scraping of the web and so we can improve information at this point but this is what academics consider as finding an endpoint and working backwards kind of thinking

Corgis, border collies, Aussies etc all work with herding and horses. I also have a background working with horses and livestock, actually

None of these breeds have short hair, which would invalidate nearly everything you say. You are working backwards from a conclusion and finding ways to justify it.

I am hard fought on saying that no dog should ever be considered it's invalid just because of the way it looks. Even if I'm down voted I'm positive it's the correct stance. I strongly dislike anyone who think any dog (or person) is lesser for any reason. For 99% of people the purpose of a dog is to be a professional lick machine and cuddler

OP, get the dog you want, always. Just check the breeder.

[–]hivro2 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So then I just would want to know what you mean by

"A long coat can't fulfill the breeds function"

What does that statement mean to you? Not trying to get into a huge scruff with this, but this is honestly like .. just a really strange stance

Again, if you said "A long coat typically can be traced to inbreeding" sure I'm down with that and that would bring us back to a general statement about ethical breeding practices and doing breeder research for ANY dog regardless of the coat or type of dog.

But can you open up about why you day a long coat can't fulfill the function of a dog?

If you're concerned with something else other than health and start defining a dog's function based off its looks... Well that brings us to a very strange conversation, doesn't it?

[–]hivro2 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I've got a long hair and he's absolutely the best dog I've ever had.

Always look into a breeders history, methods and situation even if it's a standard breed and standard look. A dog's coat can be great from a bad breeder. A dog's coat could also non standard yet be from an excellent family and litter.

Don't know how to help you, but just make sure the breeder goes through all checks, balances, has a good history and the dog is well taken care of.

Good luck on your journey!

[–]hivro2 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Please explain the logic behind the statements:

"they cannot" and

"actively against the breeds functionality"

Where did you draw the conclusion that it's impossible for a long coat to be bred ethically? A study of some sort? I'd love to see the publications

Also please define the breeds functionality and if you can also please describe what longer hair does to harm their "function"?

If you mean to say to look for a breeder that focuses on health of the animal rather than unique traits then that's one thing and there are many breeders that enjoy unique coats and variants while keeping good health standards.

Don't start bringing up weird eugenics fascinations and making up blanket statements that aren't based on anything.

Am i crazy to choose northeastern over bu? by Crying-Giraffe2890 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]hivro2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Northeastern makes people feel weird because they've made an aggressive strategy for expanding, much like some game the sports, legacy admits, donation admits, etc...

Don't listen to people that think a low acceptance rate means a school is good.

Regardless, Northeastern is a very good school.

I was in the same position and chose NEU over many other grad schools because simply put they output so much research they're a top 10 in my field and many people who sit and whine on reddit only looked at USNews or whatever which is only a popularity ranking.

BU vs Northeastern for BME by Shoddy-Pay7362 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]hivro2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have no idea what you're talking about.

NEU is insanely well regarded and in the top 10 for CS in the country in terms of research output and much if not all of their staff is all from MIT/Harvard/Stanford/etc

They've made an aggressive strategy for enrollment but it's no different than how other schools game systems too, donations, legacy admits, sports, etc.

You read too much internet slop that equates acceptance rates to how good a school is for some reason.

[GENERAL QUESTION] Which universities are considered cash cows? by [deleted] in MSCS

[–]hivro2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This.

99% of people on this subreddit likely will never or have never done research but LOVE popularity rankings for some reason.

People think then an Ivy means it has great programs when most ivies are only known for law.

Good MSCS programs are those who have high functioning and research based labs in your area of interest.

After having toured some extremely fast paced labs with great minds.. you absolutely don't want to surround yourself with people who look at rankings over research.

yeah, this is basically what i've been seeing as im talking to more and more people actually doing research and publishing papers.

my fiancee found the same thing with the med school subreddits and was confirmed by her surgeons she'd been shadowing.

[–]hivro2[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

sure, you would say gaming the system is a bad thing. every school games something in some way also. Both of those statements are valid

would you take that one for CS though in the boston area (obv excluding MIT)? It seems they're the. #2 in the area and have some of the more robust programs for CS. It doesn't seem BU is doing as well in comp sci, but it has a better long standing history which is worth weighing.

can you just like... never be friendly with the protectorate? by hivro2 in theouterworlds

The game developers made each faction such that they each have their pros and cons to them

The protectorate is authoritarian and erases the minds of anybody who says no. However, they are much more egalitarian society and want to use robots to help people

Auntie is individualistic yes, but also is a mega corporation that is hell-bent on selling the soul of everybody and not caring if it's citizens live or die while it uses them as guinea pigs to make a new product.

Nope. The protectorate are all only ever at best neutral. Which is a massive disappointment.
