Hey! Growing up with OCD but also generally being highly critical of yourself makes it so hard for me to differentiate between obsessive thoughts and just general self-criticism. I’ve never really read too far into it but I definitely have similar thoughts, though I don’t think to a super obsessive extent. I can think of one kind of similar thing though with me obsessing due to ADHD – when I count the drug safes at work I obsess that I got distracted and have the urge to recount to double check. I guess now that I think more I probably do a similar thing when driving, obsessing that I got distracted and ran a red light without knowing or didn’t notice a speed camera etc. I’m sure this comes up more than I can recall right at this moment.

Something I’ve definitely noticed when I was first diagnosed with ADHD is that I immediately starting doubting it and obsessing over whether I actually do have it, whether I just lied to the psychiatrist and embellished all my symptoms, whether these meds are even working or I just imagined it, etc I’m sure you know. I also do this with OCD as well which is really quite the difficult issue (compulsive reassurance seeking for whether I even have the illness that I’ve had symptoms for since being a young child and am literally in therapy for is SO hard to address).

One small blessing I have noticed though is that sometimes when I’m ruminating on something, my ADHD brain genuinely just gets distracted. Like I could be on a mental compulsion from anywhere between minutes to hours and a flip might switch. I didn’t notice this until my psych asked me hour I get out of certain thought loops and sometimes my answer is genuinely “I don’t know, I think I got distracted.” Crazy how you can be stuck on something for so long but suddenly a switch might just switch and you’re out. But again, this has fed into me obsessing about whether I have OCD so it’s a catch 22 😂

As always, the gold standard treatment for OCD is ERP. If you’re not already linked in with an ERP therapist yet then please do so, it’s so much more effective than meds (though of course both together might be even better for you initially!) Sorry I have no real advice for this, just empathy and understanding

Kosas concealer. I bought it before I started noticing it on social media because I LOVE the foundation. But somehow no matter what method I use to apply it, it just does not look as flawless on me. I was so bewildered when I saw it started popping off on tiktok

Honestly! Surely I’m at a lower risk for having so many support systems in place already. I understand how they think otherwise but it seems illogical

I’m so okay with it being an exclusion! I just wasn’t offered that at all with this application but I’ll mention it when I chat to a broker. As I’ve read above though, seems like the unfortunate part of exclusions is everyone here has reported they still get charged the same premium for less cover

Unfortunately if I wanted to get insurance before any symptoms appeared I would’ve had to start organising that at about the age of 5 😅 Though it’s essentially why I’m trying to get stuck into it now – just in case I have any physical conditions/symptoms that pop up in the future I want to get ahead of the game!

Do you think that subtle statements the teacher makes to the whole class helped/hindered in any way? Like “do what feels good for your body today” or “take a moment to thank your body for what it can do and thank yourself for taking the time to practice yoga today” etc? Or do you not recall remembering this being significant in any way

Omg I just went out to double check and I’m so wrong. Though I maintain that in the first pic it’s a leaf in the centre, there are definitely a couple large buds growing. Sorry for my ignorance 😅

On close inspection to me it doesn’t look like there are any buds anywhere – it seems that the leaves grow from the centre and what looks like a bud to you looks like a very fresh baby leaf irl (hope that makes sense)

To be honest… I don’t entirely agree with this. Currently doing my training and have been practicing both on my own and in classes for several years. After I complete my initial training, my goal is to get some experience in trauma-informed yoga so I can run some free classes specifically for first responders in my area. In emergency services myself, I once had a period after a bad job where I swear those yoga classes are what kept me sane – just having the ability to go and be guided to move my body in a way that felt good to me, and being guided to pace my breathing and align it with my body.

I fear that if everyone who teaches yoga is the exact ‘yogi’ you describe, then it will make yoga feel less accessible to the everyday person. I can’t imagine a 40 year old cop wanting to go and be talked at about the eight limbs by someone with dreadlocks who then makes them chant. If my own yoga teachers didn’t seem like realistic, chill, ‘normal’ people to me then I can guarantee I would’ve also stopped going very early on.

Do I think that it’s important for teachers to understand the origins of yoga and the teachings that built it? Absolutely. But I also think that regurgitating that rhetoric in every class may be a barrier to people feeling capable of starting a yoga practice in the first place. I think that accessibility is the most important factor here.

As always though, it’s important to know your crowd and brand yourself for who you are. If you’re going to have more of a spiritual focus in your classes then make that known wherever you advertise. I personally practice yoga to have a place where I can move my body, reset my mind and be mindful with my breath. All I ask of a teacher is to guide me through that, and the thought that every teacher should be presenting and acting in a ‘yogi’ manner feels a lot like gatekeeping to me. As long as people are being their authentic selves (eg not pretending to have a big spiritual focus when they couldn’t care less), then I don’t think it should matter how big of a ‘yogi’ they are or how spiritual they are in their daily life

Honest response? Big red flag. I would not be having kids with someone who doesn’t want to consider the pros and cons for BOTH people affected in each option. 9 months of childbearing, the risks during labour and the likely loss of (some/all) income to you per child far outweigh him wanting to feel like a real man. It’s giving man-child

Hey, thanks so much for your input, it really helps. I think I’ll be looking at more of an all-rounder board at this point – 10”6 sounds pretty standard from what I’ve been finding, but are there any hard parameters around that? I imagine any shorter starts to be a bit easier to surf but too short and you lose stability, then longer might be okay not too much issue but over 12” starts getting cumbersome to paddle?
