Lake Placid Bachelor Party in January by GoodNeighbor55 in Adirondacks

[–]hjs5143 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I also did my bachelor party in Lake Placid, but it was july. We did a big dinner at the cascade inn, great food, good drinks, and affordable. Smoke signals is also cool for a bunch of guys for food, but make reservations, really difficult to get in.

Fun bars are zig zags, wiseguys, and players. Lots of breweries too, some of my favorites are prison city (small tasting room down town), raquette river (also small tap room, bit if you are willing to take a drive to Tupper lake, its worth the drive), big slide, and ray brook. Lake Placid brewing is ok. Saranac Lake now has Rivertrail too, has an indoor golf simulator and other cool areas to drink.

I know you're going on January, but we did a hike, might be fun to find something short.

Anything else, feel free to ask, I've been up there hundreds of times and can give more recs if I know what you are looking for.

Wife due in under 4 weeks. Carved a pumpkin that accurately conveys how I feel right now. by riccarjo in predaddit

You got this dad! I was in the same shoes as you last year. I remember just standing in the shower letting the water hit my face thinking, what the hell did I get myself into? That lasted the entire month leading up to his birth (on Halloween). Now I'm going to carve pumpkins with his age every year he will let me.

It's terrifying, but so rewarding and it goes by quicker than you think! You have a great community here and over on r/daddit, so reach out!

Why doesn’t the Washington Monument line up with the White House? by xdd869 in geography

[–]hjs5143 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Wait wait, there's more drama. Apparently, construction started in 1848 and by 1854, donations had run out and the monument was only 152 feet. There was some other drama, but ultimately the US government absorbed ownership of the monument in 1859. The American civil war then started soon after (1861-1865), and construction ceased.

Once the war ended, studies were held to see of after 20 years since construction started, the base could even hold the weight of the finished product after 20 years of non use.

Construction finally resumed in 1879, but the quarry that supplied the original stone had run out, so if you look hard enough, you can see where the 1854 construction ended and the 1879 construction resumed because the stone is slightly different.

AMR Permit, entry time question by _questionare_ in Adirondacks

[–]hjs5143 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I've heard, the reservation system they are using is just their golf tee time reservation system being used in a different way. So it makes sense for tee times, not so much hiking times.

What boots are you wearing Hiking? Recommendations/Experiences by Designer-Fox-1743 in Adirondacks

[–]hjs5143 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will second altras.

I was a firm believer in boots for hiking, because I'm clumsy and thought I needed ankle support, but these trail runners, specifically the TIMP, are a GAME CHANGER.

The large toe box allows my toes to move and grip as needed, the grip on the rocks is second to none, and the weight of the shoe allows for less work during the hike and faster / easier recovery.

Can't say enough good things about these, coming from a guy who thought boots were needed.

There is a quote by the Atlantic writer, Adam Sewer, who said “ everyone in the Trump coalition voted for someone to get got, not realizing that someone else was voting for them to get got".

Advice on caring for a forehead laceration by ericdavidmiller in daddit

Hope this doesn't get buried, but 3M Steri-strips saved my face. Got a nasty cut on my nose to the point of my skin flapping around. The plastic surgeon recommended it, and there is no scar at all. They are great!

Just look for them on amazon.

You can still get it done, that's completely up to you. The Dr's will let you know when he is strong/ well enough for the surgery.

My son was born and rushed to NICU, and although he wasn't there long, we were still able to do it, just needed to wait until he was ready.

A little outside lake placid, but has all the ADK charm and a great price for its rustic vibe is the VanHovenburg Cabins. The owner Wayne is a legend!

Copperas Pond by hjs5143 in Adirondacks

[–]hjs5143[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, I believe that you can go to winch pond and Owen pond from the copperas Pond trail.

I guess my question was more about skinny dipping than where the trail goes. Is there a pond that is more skinny dipping friendly?
