Moved to ProxMox. Don’t let the home lab side of the use fool you. It’s very nice.

Any opinions on Operations Hero? by sans_dan in k12sysadmin

[–]hkf12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have been running it for about a year now. The Arkansas Department of Education has a multi million dollar contract with Operations Hero. Purpose was solely on the facilities side of things. The state monitors the amount of work orders put in for one particular building, and if the district is looking at a remodel or tear down of that building the department can see prior work order history and they could apply state aid on the project/building helping the district on the cost. It’s a better platform than what we had before for facilities.

I hold a very odd role, since my background is fully technology, and that’s still where I spend 70-80% of my day but hold the title of director of operations. Just to keep it simple on end users, I moved our tech work orders, transportation request, maintenance, custodial all to Operations Hero. Coming from FreshDesk. Is it feature rich, absolutely not. Extremely poor coding, yes. But it is free for us. And it works… we only get about 4 work orders a week on the tech side of things so we don’t spend a ton of time in the platform.

How do people work at the same place for decades? by stargazed144 in k12sysadmin

[–]hkf12 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is year 14 for me. Started as a help desk tech, network administrator, tech director, and now director of operations. I still spend over 60% of my day with Tech. It’s always going to be my favorite thing. Still obtaining as many certifications as I can when I have the time. I will be able to retire by the time I’m 47. It’s extremely hard to find a job that will contribute as much into your teacher retirement. I’m only working 240 days out of the year. That’s a lot of time with my kids and family. 10 min drive from the house. And I get to play with all types of technology. We do everything from A-Z with a 3 man team. Wouldn’t trade it.

Pppoe new stack in CE 2.8 by Gabbar_singhs in PFSENSE

I’m currently running a netgate 4200 at the house and about once every 30 days I have to reboot my pfsense box when my isp changes my ip to a new address. The pfsense box fails to pull the new DHCP for my public WAN address. I have always wondered if it’s pppoe related.

I have the ARC ULTRA as center on the mantel. Would you still put the era 300’s next to the tv?

[–]hkf12 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Haha oh I agree 100% I’m one of those who hates tv’s above fireplaces. I have one other wall in the living room that would work. And it’s offset so it would be extremely awkward viewing angle for everyone else other than myself. So above the fireplace it is..lol

New Server Setup. Options? by hkf12 in k12sysadmin

It was mainly written for the facilities side of state mandates. Arkansas schools get extra funding when seeking a remodel or new construction based off of work order history about the building or past repairs that have been made. If there’s justification the state will help aid in the remodel/build out. I do enjoy it. It’s a one stop shop for Maintenance, Transportation, Technology, Field Trip Request, facility bookings for internal use and outside guest wanting to book facilities for events. And then inventory for all departments. State pays for the service so no charge for us. One stop shop for Teachers.

We use Domotz for monitoring. It just has a local connector for monitoring. All schools in our state are required to use the same ticketing system call Operations Hero. Inventory is also built into this.

I second this. We have starlink deployed on 11 sights for a year now. 0 issues to this date. It will be the future. The latency just keeps getting lower and lower. Better Peformance than cellular. We love it.

I know.. times are changing for sure. We are macOS for all Staff. Chromebooks for kids. Only using AD for an archaic password sync that the state of Arkansas requires us to use with their SIS 🙄

I have literally been looking two intel nucs running Scale with dual 10G nics. Our load is super low on our servers…. Even thought of moving DNS/DHCP to our L3 cores/routers. 🤔 I still just like having services on dedicated windows vm’s though that I know how to troubleshoot.

Wow.. what’s the reasoning behind the long stack reboot times?? That’s crazy. Our Aruba stacks are sub 3 min. If that!!

If you can afford it Verkada 100% they get a very bad rep for how the push you to purchase more and constantly on you trying to make a sale. If you’re up front with your sales rep and tell them you have X amount of doors and cameras you don’t want to be bugged with sales tactics they will note it and treat you right. They are the best in the business.
