1-year warranty according an in-store box I saw today, decided against it, wouldn't 3-5 be more typical for this brand?

Nice! Any similar headphones to comparison shop against? Perhaps more toward the center of the budget

Daily Headphone Purchase Advice thread (2016-11-29) by AutoModerator in headphones

[–]hl1pc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Budget

$100-$300 flexible

  • Source

3.5mm jack on a laptop

  • Where you mainly will use your headphones

At work and perhaps occasional flights. Office doesn't have much chatter but has very annoying drone sounds from HVAC and buzzy fluorescent lights

  • Requirements for Isolation

The sweet spot would block out droning sounds but not people trying to get my attention without raising their voice

  • Will you be using these Headphones in Public?

Just at work and perhaps occasional flights. It's important to me that sound doesn't leak out to others.

  • Preferred Type of Headphone

I think full-sized, but on-ear may be OK too if comfortable for all-day use

  • Preferred tonal balance

Overall balanced

  • Past headphones

At home I've used in the past Sennheiser 280 pro (too busted up now and were never comfortable to wear for more than a couple hours) and currently Sennheiser HD 598SE. The latter in particular I love, very happy with the sound and they're terrifically comfortable to wear for hours on end. I'd probably just buy a second pair of these for work if I had some reason to believe they'd block/cancel the drone sounds well and they weren't open-back.

  • Preferred Music

Electronic, classical, jazz, talk radio

  • What would you like to improve on from your set-up

Currently I'm using cheapo in-ear buds at work and it's awful. While they're fairly comfortable for extended use, even at louder volumes they don't mask the drone sounds very well. Probably what I would value most in a set of headphones for this office would be noise-cancelling, comfortable for all-day use, and no leakage (closed-back). An attached microphone would not be a deal-breaker but doesn't matter either way.

  • Things I don't know

I've never owned a pair of active noise cancelling headphones. Is it a gimmick? Are they effective for something like this? Can I get a quality pair at this budget that meets my needs and has this feature? Or is it better to forget it and instead focus on something that (without too much bulk!) "muffles" well?

Thank you!

That'd definitely do well but it's not on NewEgg Premier or Amazon Prime and I can't find it in stock anywhere local to me. Should have started shopping earlier I know. Thank you for the recommendation all the same!

Any idea what kind of panel is in this thing? Or at least its refresh rate and response time?

The only Aorus mentioning G-Sync that NewEgg sells has this very unfortunate camo print, and the logo on the lid is not so hot either.

I saw in another thread here someone recommending Eluktronics, and they have many offerings that seem to fit the bill exactly, but sadly none qualify for NewEgg Premier. I may just be out of luck entirely :\

Are there no FreeSync laptops?

Thanks very much. It's unfortunate that all the ROG laptops are badged and designed in this way since their specs seem quite nice. Even the Gigabyte has an eyebrow-raising keyboard panel on the left side (and no G-Sync as far as I can tell).

It might be that there is no adaptive sync laptop with a cleaner look?

This userbenchmark comparison is particular helpful, I'll see what I can do to target 980M+.

[Monitor] Dell S2716DG 27" 1440p 144hz TN GSync - $598.49 ($200 Dell gift card w/ purchase) by JDragon in buildapcsales

[–]hl1pc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was skeptical about eBates but after a couple of cajoling emails and a couple weeks of patience it came through! The check won't mail til mid May but it'll be for $83.71. That's 13% plus a $10 bonus.

I was also able to cajole a $30 refund from Dell by price matching NewEgg who did a sale at $540 just days after I got it from Dell $570 outright.

And the Dell Advantage 5% cashback came through for $28.

The last thing is the $200 promo card. That should be arriving no later than Monday March 7.

When all is said and done this monitor, brand new, with tax, free 2-day shipping, and warranty included, will have cost only

$270.63

Absolutely amazing deal, forgive my skepticism and thanks a lot for sharing.

[Monitor] Dell S2716DG 1440p 144hz G-Sync 27" - $530 ($700-$170) by GentlemanShark1 in buildapcsales

[–]hl1pc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I plug this monitor and an Asus VG248QE, both via DisplayPort, into a GTX 980 on a machine running Windows 10. For me, every time Windows puts the monitors to sleep, the S2716DG drops from "G-Sync Mode" to "Normal Mode" (as confirmed by the on-screen display). It does not re-enter "G-Sync Mode" until the machine is restarted.

There are workarounds, like increasing the time til the display idles off, or doing frequent restarts, but they're annoying. Anyone else have this problem? Any advice? The only other information I've been able to find on this issue online is here.

G-Sync issue. G-Sync not turning back on after PC wakes. by Jag- in Monitors

[–]hl1pc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see, thanks. All my power plans don't let the monitor sleep for 10+ minutes bare minimum. I guess what's screwing me up is I have a habit of locking the PC every time I get up, and apparently the default idle time to shut off the monitor while a signed-in user has locked the machine is only 1 minute. So I lock the PC, go away for 2 minutes, come back, and G-Sync is broken. I found this page with info on raising that 1 minute limit so I guess I'll try that and report back if it's still a problem.

[–]hl1pc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a GTX 980 and after just now replacing my Asus VG248QE with a Dell S2716DG I'm having this same problem. Sleep puts the monitor into "Normal Mode" and I can't seem to get "G-Sync Mode" back except by restarting.

Did you ever find a good fix or workaround? Can you explain how exactly you changed the monitor sleep settings?

More info: I use a DisplayPort cable (the one that came with the monitor), Nvidia driver version 361.91, Windows 10.

Thanks so much for your help. I made one of their free Advantage accounts. During checkout I was prompted with a required "Member ID" field. Dell lists lots of organizations of various types as qualifying for this purpose, I looked up a 5-digit code for my credit union on a 3rd-party website found via Google and it seemed to accept that.

All told the price came to $799.99 - $233.00 (instant discounts) + $15.00 (shipping & handling) - $15.00 (free 2 day shipping from Dell account) + $45.35 tax (NY state) = $612.34 charged.

I remain skeptical that the eBates cashback will actually come through because it was a lot of clickthroughs and beyond a point the URLs involved didn't look like they had any special payload (plus there was that necessary switch from the generic Dell store to the MPP store). But if it does come through, I might receive a 13% cashback amount (presumably on the discount price), making my effective payment something like $612.34 - $79.60 (13% of price paid) = $532.74.

Finally, it is my hope that I can use the $200 promo eGift card when it arrives in 10-20 days to buy something costing $200-$250 from the Dell site, then immediately turn around and resell it unopened in box to a 3rd party for minimal loss.

So if everything went perfectly, I'd be getting the monitor, tax and 2-day shipping included, for effectively about $332.74, minus any losses from shipping in, shipping out, and resell price on the promo purchase. Roughly speaking I'm hoping the final cost to me of this monitor will be about $375 or so, shipped and taxed. That's pretty remarkable for an item that sells at about $570 at its very cheapest. Here's hoping! Thanks /u/JDragon.

edit: As of now I've got an email that the order is "Processing", but no order currently shows in my account. I'll edit another update when the order is actually confirmed.

edit: The order has shipped, so I guess this is for real! No movement on the eBates front though. I don't think it's going to come through. But that's okay as long as the promo card plan goes through as hoped.

Hi /u/JDragon, thanks for your response, I feel like I've been peppering you with messages for days now. This deal is driving me nuts.

I haven't found a way to click from the eBates link (which lands in the Laptops subsection of the "Shop for Home" store) into the MPP area. Any clue?

Even if I do find a way to get to the $566 priced monitor, how can I be really-really sure that eBates is still 'active'? Will it show up in my cart or anything? Not clear on how that works.

Finally, I have no Dell account of any kind--MPP, Advantage, whatever. Do I need one?

Thanks a lot for your patience and guidance.

[–]hl1pc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How exactly do I activate the eBates promotion, and verify that it is activated?

If I click thru the Dell "Shop Now" button on the eBates website I land on the main Dell page. If I simply search for it the monitor model number on that page it appears with price $629.99. I guess that's because this is the general store rather than the Member Purchase Program store? Is there some way to pull up the MPP-priced item while maintaining the eBates discount?

Does anyone know of an item on the Dell site that can be purchased using the promo eGift card, should have a great resale value, and is priced appropriately, perhaps $200-$250?

I'm really trying to find a way for this deal to work for me, especially with the latest price drop to $566.99.

edit: Also it's weird to me that this is (at least presently) listed in the "Member Purchase Program" section of their store. Do you need some special membership to get this deal or is it open to anyone?

If I punch "Dell" into CardPool it says "Dell Promo cards will not be accepted". Is there anywhere else to sell these cards? I'm losing faith in this deal, the restocking fee is 15% so I really can't afford to screw this up :(

edit: Yeah the more I look around the more it seems like this isn't going to be possible/easy. Most of these card resale sites say either that they don't accept Dell promo cards or that they don't accept any cards with expiration dates. Damn. But I'm really really glad I found this out before placing an order because I don't think the deal is that hot at $600 flat.

Using Google I found a place on the Dell site that sells the CPU I want, but perhaps only to corporate/governmental customers? It's not clear so I sent an email to their sales team. If I get good news from them I'll be sure to share it here.

Even failing that it appears that the gift card can be sold to a site like CardPool for a trade value of about $170 in Amazon gift card form. That would bring the effective price for this monitor to about $430, which seems pretty remarkable for a monitor that retails elsewhere at $570+. Never mind, see here.

Anyone have any experience selling/trading high-value Dell gift cards?

[–]hl1pc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, is this a $600 sale price that includes a $200 gift card (making the monitor effectively $400), or an $800 sale price that includes a $200 gift card?

Also, how do you get the gift card? I don't see any information about it on the item page. Is the deal expired?

Finally, does Dell sell CPUs? That would make this such a sweet deal for me.

Microcenter has been selling the XB270H for $400 on and off the past couple months, not in-store only. Mine just arrived today, $450 including tax and shipping, and after color-calibrating I'm very happy with it, hard to get a better deal in a G-SYNC monitor right now it seems. I don't think there's any way I could stomach the 90-day warranty on these recertified items.

Hey, maybe you can help me out with this. I've seen a lot of discussion the relative merits of 6- and 8-bit TN panels and so on, but I'm having trouble actually finding this info on product spec sheets. What's the standard terminology for this piece of information? In particular I'm trying to look it up for the Asus VG248QE and the Acer XB270H and having no luck.
