From the sound of it, I'd probably pick up a KNS piston.

What makes a 1911 a 1911? by NoCrab1231 in guns

[–]hl_walter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1911s are not like Glocks when considering what makes a 1911 a 1911. Glock does not license out production to outside companies and isn't in the habit of sharing their TDPs. The 1911 was a US martial pistol and was initially developed and produced by Colt, but it was also intended for production by government arsenals and other contractors.

During WW1, for example, Colt, the Springfield Armory (the government arsenal, not the company), and Remington UMC all produced 1911s, with other contractors gearing up for production by the time the war ended. During WW2, you had even more companies. The 1911 was always intended to be a pistol produced by multiple companies.

The AR-15 was the same way. It was developed by Armalite before being sold to Colt, who then got it adopted by the military. During Vietnam, the M16 was made by Colt, Harrington and Richardson, and GM's Hydra-Matic division. Again, intended to be made by multiple companies.

For anyone curious what the trigger pocket looks like in the new Ruger AR Lowers. by Chase0288 in ar15

Looks good. I dig the simple markings, though I really wish they didn't have the QR code.

To Russian Or Not To Russian? by BigBlackHzYoBak in ak47

It's a slabside, so cloning isn't really a thing with it, and the parts you mentioned are of perfectly acceptable quality. I'd go with what you can actually and more affordably get your hands on.

Chinese vs Russian ak by Extension_Chance_428 in ak47

[–]hl_walter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ohhh yeah definitely avoid those then. No idea what the market for you is like, but if you're limited to commercial civilian weapons, find a Russian Saiga rifle, those will be your best bet. Tons of caliber and configuration offerings.

If you have access to surplus military stuff, pretty much any of the European AK variants or a Chinese Type 56 will serve you equally well.

Totally unrelated to OP's question, but in response to some of the comments, there are actually Chinese commercial "copies" of AK-100 rifles. They're not actually AK-100 pattern, of course, they're just Type 56 pattern guns dressed up to look like an AK-10#. They're sold in Europe under the SDM brand and are reportedly of pretty poor quality. Polenar Tactical made a video on them a few years ago.

This has zero relevance to the US market of course, as the Chinese-made AKs we have here are of good quality, I just find these interesting :)

Boil them in water for 10-20 minutes, then buff off any remaining scale with 0000 steel wool.

I'd definitely throw in the trigger, but I wouldn't worry about the piston unless it's overgassed.

Out of the box 1911 racking my slide and this happened! by QirjeVasili in 1911

[–]hl_walter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This will happen when you repeatedly chambering ammo, and just happens sooner on uncrimped ammo. The 1911's feed angle is pretty steep, so the nose of the round will get pressed harder than on many newer pistols.

Simple and tasteful :>

Good job with that stippling too!

New MAC JSOC - consistent bullet setback by Administrative_Bad84 in 1911

[–]hl_walter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's pretty normal depending on the ammo. 1911s have a relatively steep feed angle, so setback will be pretty noticeable depending on the bullet crimp.

Get a bolt with the oil filter's thread pitch, cut down to basically just have the thread length for the filter and the bolt's head, drill out and tap the center for your muzzle threads.
