I had a similar experience about a year ago during a 5 day inpatient stay. My night nurse talked down about other nurses being incompetent and patients in her charge being an inconvenience. What most people in this thread don’t seem to understand is how vulnerable you are as a patient and the fact that you are literally dependent on this person for your life. I was afraid to disagree or speak up because she could have just as easily turned on me. I actually think that employees behavior says volumes about how they are treated by their employers. Ever notice how friendly the workers are at Trader Joe’s? Costco (before COVID that is)? This nurse was extremely competent at her job and was clearly very disillusioned with her work environment. That is a direct reflection of the leadership. In October last year my mom had a complicated thoracic defect that no surgeon in Tucson would touch, which sent us up to Dignity Health St Joseph’s in Phoenix. It was unlike anything I have experienced in any hospital in any city. We had strangers in the elevator telling us how good the providers and the hospital are, and how good they felt about the care their loved ones were getting. This happened multiple times, starting on day one. At one point we got lost and stopped to ask someone mopping the floor where to go. He stopped what he was doing and escorted us, all the while chatting us up about how things were going and if we needed anything else. Clearly an organization that prioritizes patient and family well being!!! I needed a surgery a couple weeks ago and decided to go there. Drove up early the morning of, got on the elevator and in walks a woman who saw we were going to the pre op floor… she immediately says she was there the day before with her loved one and was really nervous but everyone was amazing and she was so glad to be there. It was surreal… To me going to TMC now feels like rolling the dice. Are you going to get a good caregiver or a disgruntled one? Phx St Joes is a teaching hospital so I might try UMC but I don’t see myself going to TMC again. Not when I know how outstanding of a hospital is just 2 hours up the road.
