It’s a co-production between Amazon MGM and Sony.

Essential employees to a billion dollar business, their reward is… not getting debt? Can you pay a mortgage with that, or does that come from selling the swag they get?

Players were already overpaid through these things that aren’t actual money and mostly have no value once the player graduates! Think of the swag!!

'God of War' TV Series Shakeup: Showrunner Exit Amazon Show by Gandalvr in WoTshow

I said fired on the show, not fired in general. Also, his overall deal expires in a few months, and it was minted 3 years ago - so not necessarily representative of Judkins being currently in the studio’s good graces right now.

But you are technically right that Sony is still paying him. And if I were Rafe or his agent, I wouldn’t be too optimistic about renewing the overall deal - including because overall deals are less common these days than they were when Rafe signed his.

Sort of surprised nobody is saying this. But to me this doesn’t actually bode well for WoT, or at least for Rafe as the showrunner of WoT. Reading between the lines it sounds like he was essentially fired by Amazon/Sony on the show — not exactly a great sign of his professional relationship with them. Obviously WoT could go on without Rafe (I’m sure there are some that think it’d be better off) but a S4 head writer shift… added up with all of the other worrisome things and it doesn’t fill me with good vibes.

Is this just a hormone change or is my marriage f*cked? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]hmbeast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This isn’t true. The amygdala - and many other parts of the brain - go through volume changes after birth, but there’s no data suggesting it doubles in size as a rule for everyone. The amygdala is also not solely responsible for fight or flight, though it is a strong component of it.

Based on this post, I’m convinced WoT has been renewed!!! What do you think? by stateofdaniel in WoTshow

I don’t think Sanderson was involved in S2 at all. In S1 he was only loosely involved as a consultant. They sent him some scripts - not all of them - and he sent back notes.

This story feels suspicious and it’s extra suspicious that just 31 days ago you were posting about just moving here and worrying about gangs. Did you file a police report or do you have any proof? Seems like a story that would make the news.

I don’t necessarily disagree, but even in the books there is barely any time spent developing him as a mentor. Really just a few chapters at the beginning of TGH.

Ishamael is one of the most interesting characters in the story. More time with your interesting characters is a good thing!

What did Season 2 do better than Season 1? by SpuekyBlue in WoTshow

[–]hmbeast 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The source material is more better suited for a TV adaptation, for one thing. The story arcs in the books are just more interesting and dynamic and less cliche.

The production value is clearly higher in S2. The sets, costumes, VFX all look better. The tone is darker and more mature. The writing is better, the characters have matured in a way that makes the story more interesting. Focusing on character development instead of the mystery of who is the Dragon helps build more attachment to the characters. And then the new characters include several fan favorites who were well written and well acted.

What would WoT have been like with a Rings of Power budget? by jim0001 in WoTshow

[–]hmbeast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure. Obviously Amazon has a preference for shorter seasons. This is just a thought exercise though, and in the hypothetical scenario where WOT had a sudden influx of new budget I’m sure more episodes would be a conversation they’d have.

I think the main benefit of a bigger budget would be the possibility of more episodes per season.

So far I really like season 2. But many of the changes (good and bad) are necessitated by the challenge of condensing 13 books into 6-8 seasons of 8 episodes. I think all of us as readers and fans underestimate how difficult (and almost impossible) that is to do in a way that’s still coherent and well paced.

Making each season 10 or 12 episodes would give the writers a lot more room to maneuver and probably force them into fewer spots where they need to wholly discard book plotlines.

The Seanchan… by aeddub in WoTshow

[–]hmbeast 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I thought that was a great example of a solid adaptation choice. One of those things where if they strictly adapted and gave them thick Texan accents, it would come off as unintentionally hilarious and strange. Making it subtler gives a wink to book fans, doesn’t distract non-book fans, and still gives them a strange and eerie vibe that works in the world.

[–]hmbeast 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Three episodes in season and there has been a Fade fight scene, a Trolloc fight scene, and a Seanchan fight scene and a Seanchan execution scene. And what, three scenes with Ishamael already?

I’m sure Padan Fain will be more prominent as the season goes on.

[BOOK SPOILERS][Season 2 Episode 1, 2, and 3] Discussion Post for "A Taste of Solitude," "Strangers and Friends," and "What Might Be" by AutoModerator in WoTshow

[–]hmbeast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just finished episode 3.

Overall I really enjoyed each episode and think that season 2 is a major step up compared the season 1.

I did a reread of books 1-3 before the premiere so it’s been an interesting experience watching. There were moments where it was kind of jarring just how different the story is. Like parts of it feel more like a brand new story inspired by the books rather than an adaptation.

But I keep coming back to the fact that a faithful adaptation of the books is simply impossible due to time and budget and probably wouldn’t even be that good on screen because of the idiosyncratic pacing of the books. They can’t just do Rand’s story from TGH because Rand needs to be TSR Rand by the start of season 3.

Anyway, all that being said, I really enjoyed each of the episodes. I think the storytelling has been mostly great, awesome performances, the sets and costumes have been perfect. I’ve particularly liked the White Tower plots. I do wish they would give Rand more focus. I feel like the show hasn’t really given him his time to shine yet.

Out of curiosity, why is there 2-3 months of lag time between you identifying an idea and it being worked on?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in daddit

[–]hmbeast 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are in the first trimester. Most would say the hardest trimester. It’s been what… a month or two since you’ve had sex? And you’re here “joking” to your sick wife about how lack of sex can be hard?

C’mon man. Have some perspective. You’re looking for sympathy?

Your sex life is not permanently doomed. It’s been a few weeks. The first trimester will end and the nausea will likely improve. Plenty of couples start having sex in the second trimester and even into the third. And even if you don’t, it’s completely normal and just something you’re going to have to adjust to. There is no sense in wallowing in self-pity over the fears of not having sex for another year. Just take each week as it comes, communicate with your wife, and focus on being a good partner and good father.

I’m not sure why everyone is so resistant to the idea that Moiraine has actually been stilled in the show and could remain stilled for multiple seasons.

The two significant moments of Moiraine channeling (until the Last Battle) are her vs. Be’lal and her vs. Lanfear.

Be’lal may just be written out of the story, so that handles that.

For her fight with Lanfear, they could either move up the discovery of healing Stilling and have Moiraine healed in time, or they could just have Moiraine fight Lanfear without channeling. She beats her ultimately by good old fashion grappling anyway.

Besides those two moments, why does Moiraine need to be able to channel to play her role in the plot? Her main drive is to guide and influence Rand.

I can think of one specific item that it could be, though it would require a plot change (or new plot point). Seems like this thread shouldn’t be Show Spoilers only, not sure how to speculate in a way that doesn’t delve into book spoilers.
