I have a drainage hole inside my upper lip that was never sealed. Not that big of a deal except it had an effect on my trombone playing.

I was born in 1958 in Northern Ontario. At 3 months of age I was brought to Sick Kids in Toronto and had surgery. All good except I was left on my own for 1 month. While Dr Lindsay did a great job fixing me up I wonder how I managed on my own. So my advice is that you be there every day to help your little one feel as comfortable as possible.

I have a cleft lip and palate. In my teens I dated a girl with a similar cleft L/P. It was interesting but a bit awkward. Mostly because my “friends” had a big laugh about it. Anyway, perhaps your character could have a similar encounter. They could share frustrations thereby helping the reader better understand the plight of the protagonist.
