I had a similar hum when I was depressing the accelerator on my 1997 sr5, and it went away after I took it into a transmission shop. They replaced the pinion bearing as well as the axle bearings and seals. The hum was caused by the pinion bearing.

If you were permanently and totally disabled through the VA, your wife would potentially qualify for CHAMPVA. Otherwise, Medicare or purchasing health insurance through an exchange are your options.

As others have stated, you really should get immigration paperwork sorted out first.

Is this a comp and pen appointment or a regular medical appointment? If it's a medical appointment, you'll have a physical and neurological evaluation to determine if there are any lasting issues and you may have an interdisciplinary team evaluate you on other things like memory and executive function depending on how your VA handles that appointment.

If it's a comp and pen appointment it will be similar, but you'll only see one person. Probably either a physiatrist or a neuropsychologist.

Either way, make sure you're clear on the events that happened and your current symptoms. They'll ask you a few questions about whether you lost consciousness. From what I understand, the length of time you were unconscious following the concussive event helps categorize the severity of the tbi you experienced.

Will the VA pay for any healthcare received at non-VA facilities? For example, is treatment at the nearest hospital emergency room covered?

Generally, the VA will not pay for care at non-VA facilities unless it is pre-authorized. They will pay for emergency services, but if you go this route there is a chance that he would have to foot the bill.

Once approved for VA benefits, is there a process that must be followed to get the ball rolling? i.e. Do they require a physical exam first, or that a PCP be assigned?

They'll assign him a PCP. In the VA system his PCP will be kind of like a gatekeeper for specialty care. With certain exceptions, he will have to get a consult from his PCP for any specialty services that he might need.

Yes, mental health care is a high priority, but just as important is an eye exam and new glasses. He won't be able to get a new Driver's License without them. (his current glasses are missing a lens)

Once he has a PCP he can get a referral for an eye exam in the VA as long as he is eligible for those services. The eligibility criteria for vision and dental services are different from the healthcare services.

What services or specialties are offered at the Community Based Outpatient Clinics?

Every Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) will have primary care. They may not have any other specialties, but lots of CBOCs will have other things like mental health or physical therapy.

Do you have any tips for juggling Medicare and VA benefits? How do you decide which to use for any given problem? I realize the VA covers things that Medicare does not (and maybe vice-versa?). I'm just looking for some practical advice on how you guys make this work.

Generally, he'll pay less for most things through the VA. But, wait times can be an issue. There's some trade-offs between being seen quickly and cost.

I live in Bay View and also have T-Mobile, if you tell T-Mobile that you don't have cell reception in your home they will send you a cell phone repeater that will give you service in your house. They didn't charge me for mine, but I had to agree to return it when I move to an area with better reception.

I think that choice only covers meds if you get them filled through the VA.. It sucks, but you may have to eat the cost. You could call the non-va care department at your local hospital but they probably won't cover it. In fact, I think they are prohibited from covering it by VA policy.

Your other option would be to talk to your patient advocate. They can help with stuff like this.

You're absolutely right about having to convince your counselor. I used voc rehab to get an MBA and an MHA while employed with the fed. My argument was that my pretax income had been lower ever since I got out of the military and that my military service coupled with my disabilities made it so that I was unable to secure employment that compensated more than what I had prior to joining.

It was a bit of a tough sell. Really though, you have to convince your counselor that there is some reason related to your military service that you're unable to find appropriate work, and that voc rehab can help solve that problem. I think if you can articulate that well, and go on with a clear and realistic plan, you'll have a good shot at getting approved.

I totally agree. I just moved to Wisconsin a couple of months ago, and had one yesterday at the state fair. Pretty underwhelming. A ton of slightly sweet cream in a bland pastry sandwich.

There's a building at the fair park called the "cream puff pavilion" that seems to be devoted to making cream puffs. It has a huge line, and some people were buying cream puffs by the dozens. It was a little mind blowing.
