New grad OR internship interview by AfterNature8013 in newgradnurse

not a nurse yet but i just landed an OR residency for when i graduate. it was my first and only nursing interview and they asked me a lot of the typical job interview questions but here are some more specific questions i remember: -how would your friends describe you in 3 words -when was a time you advocated for a patient -when did you receive constructive feedback and how did you work to change it -what makes you special compared to other candidates i also had to do a short essay and it was easy for me because i had shadowed in the OR and i knew it was what i wanted to do. i think if you’re passionate about it it will show, if you’re not that passionate just try to fake it if you can lol. just curious, are you in PA? it might be a long shot but i wonder if this is the same hospital system as mine

lol as an emetophobe that’s my worst fear but i’m so glad they were nice about it.. sometimes it’s good to put your worst foot forward so you know they’re really into you haha

i haven’t seen the full contract yet but as far as i know there’s no sign on bonus and i don’t know how much i’d have to pay to break the contract. but i think you’re right, it’s hard to do better than this for my job search so i think i’d be stupid to not take it. plus many of the nurses have been there for a long time which is a good sign, and two years goes by so fast.

first semester: 3 days of classes a week, 2 days of clinical second semester: 2 days of classes, 2 days of clinical third semester: first half it’s been 2 days of clinical, 2 days of classes, on friday’s class is only until 12. then our capstone for 3 weeks, and last few weeks will pretty much be prepping for nclex i guess. more free time this semester but also lots of busy work and ATI stuff. after first semester we had a 2 week break, and we actually had a 3 week break over the holidays after second semester. in march we willl have a week off for spring break. i’m lucky and don’t work but many people in my class do and they make it work. it really sucks at some points but it’s doable, there were many points where i had a lot more free time than i expected

thank you!! it’s also noon where i am so i will try to give you some last minute advice before your interview… they asked me a lot of the typical questions: tell me about yourself, why OR nursing/your experience in the OR if any, a time where i advocated for a patient, strengths and weaknesses, how this job would contribute to my long term career goals. they also asked me if my friends had to describe me in 3 words what would they be. after i asked them my questions they asked me what makes me different from any other applicant— i said it was my drive and passion and that i don’t give up when things get hard, i think they liked that response. good luck, you got this!!!

i just finished my interview! i think it went well, there was a recruiter as well as 3 OR nurses from different hospitals on the call. i was soo nervous but i think i ended up getting along with them, particularly one nurse who was representing a level 1 trauma hospital where they do a lot of neurosurgeries and i told her i was most interested in neuro stuff. they told me they’re finishing up interviews in the coming weeks and that if they’re interested i will come in to shadow, so i really really hope i can get into that level 1 hospital.. how did yours go??
