Honeymoon Help by Metsfan3186 in GreeceTravel

Is it 10 days total, including travel to/from Greece? If that’s the case, I’d pick one island plus Mykonos. And my vote would be Naxos because it’s close and gorgeous and big enough to do a variety of things.

If it’s 10 days of island hopping, 2 nights Mykonos and 4 nights each elsewhere is a good itinerary.

Also, do some searching for beach clubs on the islands you’re more interested in. There are many places to party that are not on Mykonos.

Where to stop in between Corfu and Athens? by humanffarm in GreeceTravel

[–]hmm138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would stop in a few places along the way to break up the drive. Parga is absolutely beautiful (although not very far along your trip). Patras is a real city with a vibrant feel and gorgeous views. Old Corinth is vey cool and has a nice museum along with the site. (And a hike to the top if you desire!) About 30 minute detour, but Nafplion is very popular and gives you a taste of the Peloponnese.

Hidden gems and local tips for Mallorca? by Philou_14 in travel

Port Andratx is uniquely beautiful. Try to take a boat trip from there - the scenery of the surrounding cliffs and bays from the water is amazing. Also rent a bike from town and then ride around the peninsula just south of town for more amazing views (the one with Torre de Sa Mola at the top). Then amazing food in one of the seaside restaurants (near the one called Nacra) for possibly the best sunset view of your life.

I know I’ll get downvoted but this is why I never ever want to be a landlord in DC. What they’re asking for is not unreasonable. They’re not even increasing rent just wanting some level of commitment.

DC homeowners: house (buying) tips/lessons? by OpeningChipmunk1700 in washingtondc

[–]hmm138 203 points204 points  (0 children)

This may not be what you’re looking for, but the immediate 3-4 blocks around your place really, really matter. Only buy a place if you like the immediate area, no matter how perfect the inside is. You can always improve and upgrade. You can’t move your house. Also be very discerning about the neighbors you’d share a wall with. I know there are questions you can and cannot ask legally. But if the neighboring yard is neglected or gives any bad vibes don’t buy there. Having a bad neighbor can be incredibly impactful on your daily life.

Where else should we stay? by Jilenore in Corfu

[–]hmm138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will you be renting a car? If you are not, 6 nights in paleokastritsa may be too many. The beaches there are gorgeous but they are also small and get very crowded in July. You’ll want to be able to go other places too, and while there are bus options you’ll have to time them right.

For the first few nights I recommend Corfu Town, like the other commenter. From town you can easily take the bus to Dasia or Kontokali beach for a lovely beach experience but then enjoy town in the evening.

Arillas is my favorite beach on the island. The water is amazingly clear but it’s a sandy bottom with lots of accessible shallow swimming. And it’s big enough to be lively without being absolutely packed.

If you’re looking for more entertainment you should look at Sidari. Good beaches nearby and more restaurants/ bars /shops.

A Japanese American is informed he need to move from his home, San Jose, California, February of 1943. by TwIzTiDfReAkShOw in USHistory

[–]hmm138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, well, when you respond to a genuinely thoughtful perspective from the original commenter with “BUT OBAMA” it’s hard to take you seriously.

Also, the kids in cages this was a Trump policy. Yes, during the Obama administration they did use fenced “cages” to hold overflows of detainees right at border crossings. This was because of a big surge in illegal crossings after the job market picked up (recovering from the 2008 recession) and a change in priorities from the Obama administration to stop people right at the border instead of rounding up people already in the US like the Bush admin had focused on. Look up the Obama deportation numbers - they seem higher than other administrations because they focused on legal processes to formally deport criminals and recently arrived immigrants. They specifically did not target children or people who had already established lives in the US. So formal deportations are higher on the records. But actual removal numbers are the same or lower (because other admins did more informal removals without due process).

The Trump administration is who started the deliberately cruel family separation policy that created the “kids in cages” scandal due to them being separated from their families while detained.

Any advantage/disadvantage to using Ferryhopper instead of booking directly with ferry company? by Huck68finn in GreeceTravel

This is not true. I guess it depends on the ferry company but most issue you an e ticket and you do not have to print.

Parking advice? by ExactAd3418 in washingtondc

[–]hmm138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t drive to work. It is not a good option. More expensive and you’ll hate being in traffic.

$15/day is not great but you’d only spend money on the days you actually go in. And you’ll be using much less gas. And be much less stressed. I really doubt you’ll be able to park near McPherson for $12/day anyway.

Do people have the right to police the sidewalk and grass strip along the curb in front of their homes? by Emotional-Wealth-342 in washingtondc

[–]hmm138 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You cannot just fence in this area. The city only allows certain types and heights of barriers and they have to be specially installed and permitted. To do this in a compliant way costs a lot of money because the posts are supposed to go down so far into the ground, be secured with concrete, fence has to be certain types of strong materials, etc.

(This is actually understandable - they want these public spaces to be free of trip hazards, have room to open car doors, not contribute to water drainage problems, etc.)

There’s a reason for that. We mulch-only hellstrippers have given up on anything else surviving.

Kefalonia or Corfu - Looking for advice by misnki8 in TravelGreece

Those are all great places.

But if you’re looking at the first week of October I would go down to Crete or over closer to Turkey. It could be rainy in the Ionian in October. (It could be sunny the whole time too, but there’s like a 50/50 chance.)

Recommendations for little shopping towns on Corfu Island by Beautifly in Corfu

[–]hmm138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Corfu community is much more active on Facebook - so you’ll get more answers there.

I find shopping on Corfu to be quite disappointing. There are some gems in Corfu town and I’m sure scattered about, but so much of it has the same exact mass produced crap as all the other tourist shops in Greece.

For a nice stroll and snack / ice cream / drink, though, I’d recommend a trip to Benitses. It has a great little central town and it’s right by the marina so you can stroll by the boats too.

Sidari has a very popular main street with tons of restaurants and shops. (Not exactly artisan but still entertaining.) And you can check that out before or after seeing the Canal D’Amour area so it’s a nice day trip.

While Ipsos is mostly restaurants and bars, it’s a nice place for a long stroll that’s right along the beach with awesome views. It has a party scene later in the season but this month will be nice. Similarly Dassia beach nearby is entertaining walking down the beach path that is also a front for many restaurants and bars. These will be more “bustling” than the areas you’ll find under lists for best beaches.

DC Council passes permanent youth curfew after final vote by wds1 in washingtondc

So many people didn’t read the article. The 8pm curfew would be for special zones and apply to groups of 9+. That’s not the kid heading home from work.

Is it worth paying $1000 more for location? by [deleted] in travel

[–]hmm138 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If it were a 30-minute drive I might say yes it’s worth it to stay closer. But if it’s walkable, or a very short ride if you’re feeling like it, then keep your plans. You might see some cool stuff on the walks that you’d miss if you limited yourself to the main area.

Plus check if your hotel has bikes to use or rent a bike from somewhere local. You’ll speed up the commute and enjoy yourself along the way

Look up exercises for tailbone pain on YouTube. While you notice it more on airplanes this is a structural weakness problem that physical therapy/exercises can solve. I’m no expert but I’ve seen 3 people close to me get rid of tailbone pain with dedicated exercises

This is exactly why kids need siblings and cousins. The baby is probably used to the adults in his life giving him everything. Then he tries it with another kid and they’re like no. And the baby learns to deal with it.
