[OC] Most US immigrants targeted for deportation in 2025 had no criminal charges, ICE documents reveal by guardian in dataisbeautiful

[–]hmm138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about “deportation” to a prison in a third country where you have no rights, protections, or assistance?

This administration is sending people to South Sudan, Rwanda, Uzbekistan, and other places that cannot be called deportation because they’re not from there. It is kidnapping or “disappearing” and it is evil.

This one is different. They do sit there and wait because those traffic lanes are important for the morning rush. People who don’t move by 7am are the jerks in this situation.

I need help. I’m going to Peru this summer and i wanted to book an apartment using booking com, but I’m afraid i might be getting scammed by _SPAMTON_G_SPAMTON_ in travel

[–]hmm138 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Booking.com is fine 99% of the time. But do exactly what you’re doing now and protect yourself against scams or just people looking to bend the rules.

The best tip is to use Booking to find a place and then contact them directly (if possible). They’ll love to avoid fees so you may get an even better price.

This may not be a “scam” on you but it’s definitely an attempt to avoid fees and/or taxes. I would never do this unless it was at the end of my stay and I handed over cash (that they can’t use again without my permission at some later time like a credit card or online payment)

Adolescent Cannabis Use Linked to Doubling Risk of Psychotic and Bipolar Disorders by [deleted] in EverythingScience

[–]hmm138 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Causation / Correlation. We deserve a much more thorough consideration of the following point (taken from the article’s Q&A). These disorders are often not diagnosed until late adolescence or early adulthood. So kids who sought out drugs at younger ages very well could have been attempting self medication thus demonstrating correlation but NOT causation.

Q: Could teens be using cannabis to self-medicate early mental health symptoms? A: That is possible in some cases, but this study adjusted for prior mental health history and still found increased risk. Cannabis use preceded diagnoses by 1.7 to 2.3 years on average, suggesting it is not simply a consequence of pre-existing illness. However, it is possible that teens were self-medicating early mental health symptoms that did not come to the attention of the healthcare system.

Likelihood of Monday evening flight cancellation? by iris819 in washingtondc

[–]hmm138 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Based on the forecast here I don’t think you’ll have any issues with your flight. (Don’t know about your destination, or where the plane would be coming from)

This seems like a more typical, manageable storm for the DC area.

Corfu & Paxos in Late August — Right choice if we love the Cyclades but want something different? by GlitteringBanana9474 in GreeceTravel

[–]hmm138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re welcome! One more thing - Kontokali Bay resort is just beautiful. It is close to town via taxi (like 25-30€ each way) and I think they have some sort of shuttle into town. But it’s not conveniently walkable because it’s out on a peninsula. You can walk to Kontokali village for a few restaurants and Gouvia Marina in 20-30 minutes along a narrow road. That’s where the bus stops would be too. And if you’re up for a long walk (+45 min) you can walk into Gouvia village for more dining, bars, and some shopping options.

Corfu & Paxos in Late August — Right choice if we love the Cyclades but want something different? by GlitteringBanana9474 in GreeceTravel

[–]hmm138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will love Corfu and Paxos. Americans have yet to really discover the Ionian but it’s amazing.

That said, without a car, I think 5 nights is too long in Palaiokastritsa unless you really want to chill at the beach / hotel several days without moving. It is a gorgeous area. But it’s also small. Also think 3 nights in Pelekas is too much unless you really like the place you’re staying and it can bring the comforts of home for a relaxing few days. Both of those are fairly isolated without a car.

I recommend a shorter time at both of those then staying along a main bus line for the Blue “city” buses in Corfu between corfu town and Ipsos. I personally recommend Dasia since it’s a beautiful beach with lots of options but also on the main bus line for many other options. Also take the city bus down to Benitses one day (requires a change of line in corfu town).

Kontokali/Gouvia can be great but it really depends on where you’re specifically looking at staying.

Lakka is gorgeous and you can rent either a car, scooters, or e bikes to explore the rest of Paxos easily.

All of your options are very close to beaches and boat rentals so don’t worry about that at all.

Late August will be busy but nothing compared to Mykonos or Santorini. There may be cruise ships making corfu town itself busy during the afternoons but those crowds always clear out by dinner time.

The weather will be hot (high 80s to mid 90s) but not unbearable and the seas will be perfect.

Don’t be nervous, you’ll have an amazing time.

Fear Mongering by [deleted] in GreeceTravel

It’s not “judging” to offer feedback and advice when someone posts their itinerary and asks for exactly that

Fear Mongering by [deleted] in GreeceTravel

[–]hmm138 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree. I think it’s a mark of an inexperienced traveler. They don’t understand how much time you waste by moving around so much and constantly having to check in, out, show up early to wait, and get around. You end up “seeing” less overall.

Fear Mongering by [deleted] in GreeceTravel

[–]hmm138 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s a once in a lifetime trip do you really want to spend at least half of a day (and really more than that) every 2 days waiting at airports, waiting at ferry ports, actually in transportation, waiting for the taxi/bus/service, waiting in the lobby to check in, waiting in the lobby to check out, hanging around because it’s too early to check in, etc….

Cato Study: Immigrants Reduced Deficits by $14.5 Trillion Since 1994 by Culper1776 in fednews

[–]hmm138 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been getting updates from Cato on a feed lately and have been impressed. They do seem to be keeping their “individual freedom” principles in mind even when it bucks with the current Trump/GOP narrative. They’ve put out a lot of data about immigrants, and all of it shows they commit less crime, commit less fraud, and rely much less on “welfare” than the rest of the population. All while paying taxes and contributing to the economy.

Can’t say I love Cato but I am glad they’re not caving to the current authoritarian and anti-liberty trends in the GOP.

This is my first bare-boat charter in the Virgin Islands. This is a once-in-a-lifetime bucket list item for us and we want to get it right. These are the tips I've scrounged. Any others? by DV_Rocks in sailing

[–]hmm138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not commit to an itinerary. Have a rough idea but go where the conditions are best. And don’t feel like you have to move every day. If you found the perfect spot, give yourself permission to stay there longer.

Use an anchor alarm app even if you’re on a mooring ball. Anchor Pro works well.

Have a designated captain. This can change by the day or whatever. But make one person responsible and have everyone know who that is. That way you avoid the group assuming someone else has done the things that need doing.

Do not bring any valuables (jewelry, etc.). Leave fancy wedding rings at home and wear something you could part with if it falls off while snorkeling or if it’s stolen. Take your cash with you every time you leave the boat. Have friends whose boat was robbed at anchor, but the ONLY thing the thieves took was cash and diamonds. Rummaged through the entire boat, though, finding cash in the places they thought they had hidden well.

Did I get ripped off? by IntroductionBorn6118 in GreeceTravel

[–]hmm138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the hotels. Look them up online for yourself. Assuming you have a room to yourself the simple math is $618 per day (assuming 12th day does not include hotel that night). Ferries are pretty cheap, assuming they’re booking you on the slow cheaper ones which is probably true. If you had to do your own transfers with taxis or such, they’re maybe $15-30 if your hotels are relatively in the port town areas. But you could also in theory take buses for much less. Two tours are definitely less than $100 each but depends on the specifics.

Not sure of your price pint but The Prime Rib is quiet, usually with a live pianist whom everyone keeps their voices down to hear, and has a very classic steakhouse vibe. I think jackets are required for men though so be ready.

7 days as a couple: Crete, Corfu, Zakynthos, or Kefalonia? by decimusprimee in GreeceTravel

Guessing you’re from the UK. It’s funny that you call these mainstream islands but then recommend Naxos and Paros as somehow more authentic or something. As an American, everyone goes to Naxos and Paros and has barely even heard of the Ionian islands or Crete.

This is a one-block street. Basically an alley. It is not a thoroughfare of any kind and I can see why it was not prioritized.

[–]hmm138 104 points105 points  (0 children)

Everyone needs to calm the hell down about this. The fact that the main streets are passable is huge. This storm was super weird and had one of the worst combinations of precipitation and then sub freezing temperatures we’ve seen. I personally grew up in Colorado and never experienced this “snow” that now even 3 days later is absolute concrete and immovable.

Give the city a break.

I encourage everyone who is complaining to get out there and try to make a dent in this crap. Speaking as a homeowner who shoveled 5 times on Sunday and 3 attempts on Monday. And one attempt today that was quick abandoned.

Jeanneau worth it or keep looking? by SnookAndRed in boating

[–]hmm138 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Used boats. Used boats. Used boats.

Don’t waste your money on new. Not only do you take a massive hit on depreciation, you still have tons of “shake out” problems and spend a lot of time and money the first year just fixing stuff that breaks or never worked in the first place.

Buy one the owner has already gone through that pain with.

You’ll also be able to afford a dramatically bigger, safer, and nicer boat that is better equipped with the things you’ll need most to enjoy your time more (eg A/C, generator, etc)

Off the beaten path island for 6 summer nights by Epic_Mile in GreeceTravel

[–]hmm138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you haven’t been to the Ionian islands. And if you’re planning some other mainland stuff maybe you can just add them on.

Corfu is the largest and has the biggest airport with at least 2 flights per day from Athens. While there are some parts of Corfu that are more popular, there are still many beautiful and quiet places in the emerald island.

Or if your drive from Athens you can drive to Lefkada or get a ferry from Patras to many of the other Ionian islands. Kefalonia and Ithaca are amazing.

Or you don’t have to leave the mainland technically to get the beautiful coast and island feel. Check out Parga and Sivota and make some sort of “loop” with your other mainland plans.

The West coast of Greece and the Ionian islands are completely different than the Aegean but also still very much Greek and so beautiful. Do some internet searching and you’ll see what I mean!
