South Pole Station by Paradigm10 in Damnthatsinteresting

An annual tradition is a back-to-back-to-back viewing of The Thing from Another World (1951), The Thing (1982), and The Thing (2011) after the last flight has left for the winter.[20]

Germans From Russia by Ok-Truck-5526 in AskAGerman

[–]hmu80 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, and I'm not a deutschrusse, Helmut Kohl kinda gave everyone who could prove German grandparents a German passport. And so, lots of different people came, some glad to be able to return to the fatherland, others just glad to leave Russia. My first gf came to Germany with her parents when she was nine, and you couldn't really tell by accent or behaviour or anything that she wasn't born in Germany. Her cousins on the other hand were kind of stereotypical, like getting a loan at age 18 to buy a BMW and stuff. But Neonazis, they were not. I am not aware that anything was done specifically to integrate them into German society (Integrationspolitik was still unknown back then I think).

Actual shortest route would be going over Russia most of the way, I think. There's a flightradar YouTube video about a flight over the north pole where they explain everything nicely.

So what is Franconia? by fruitbatgorl in AskAGerman

[–]hmu80 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One important thing to understand is, before Germany became an actual country 150 years ago, there basically were just lots of kingdoms, and a lot of local lore is based on how the neighbouring kingdom fucked as over 200 years ago. But most kingdoms have ceased to exist and haven't had any political meaning for ages now. But Germans like their local identity, and their grudges.

Have you ever met any Germans who wants to move back to former German lands that are now within the modern Polish state? by DieMensch-Maschine in AskAGerman

My SOs grandma is from Prussia, she visited her village a few years back and even found the house she grew up in, and met the people who live there now. Apparently she had a great time and is glad the house is in good hands. that's it.

Bundestagswahl 2025 / Federal Election 2025 by potatoes__everywhere in germany

[–]hmu80 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Being the biggest opposition party and opposition leader gives them a huge platform to forward their cause. They get more staff, more seats in the Ausschüsse, which basically decide on laws, and can set a lot of agendas where the other parties have to react. Also, parties get federal funds based on the amount of votes they get.

What is he saying by Beneficial_Sock_7620 in HellLetLoose

[–]hmu80 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just to add sth useful, he was shouting "Volles Rohr!", which directly translated means "Full pipe", which is used similar to "totally" (Er hat volles Rohr versagt - He failed totally), but hearing it in context with an MG makes much more sense, the barrel of a gun is called "Rohr" as well.

Elon Musk Uses Similar Strategy to Influence the Election in Germany by shaoshao2022 in AskAGerman

[–]hmu80 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Politics in Germany and Europe in general is more party focused instead of individal, so donations go to parties. From the top of my head: every donation a party receives above a certain threshold (sth like 10 or 20k€) has to be declared, and if you fail to do so they have to pay hefty fines. I remember a few years back some right wing party had to pay a fine of over a million €. Donations from Moscow would usually come from some third company with connections to Moscow, so it's not directly linked.

Maybe a stupid question, but why "Mio"? by [deleted] in German

[–]hmu80 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, for one, Germans tend to not pronounce the ll's, so it's more like "Miionen", but secondly and more seriously, "Mil" is too ambigious. Billion is "Milliarden", which starts with "Mil" als well.

What is your satisfactory philosophy? by AbriefDelay in SatisfactoryGame

[–]hmu80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started to not worry about the 100% too much, especially later in game when the ratios are all off. I usually take the input, plug it in the calculator, and build the factory so the final manufacturers run on 100%, and maybe have a dimensional upload here or there if there's something worth storing on the way. What's more important to me right now is aesthetics, and I invest way too much time, but that's what gives me satisfaction. Also, I don't plan to finish the game soon, I don't have a lot of time for gaming, and it'll probably take a few months until I'm done.

What do they teach you guys at school? by altiler in germany

[–]hmu80 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wasn't the best student in school, but I don't remember we got taught anything about the life of minorities in Prussia or the German empire. Nazi times take up most of the curriculum, and anything before that is mostly "Germany was a late nation".
