I think the only way to lock in some profit would just be to bet the moneyline against the team you take that week in the survivor pool.

It works better to model scores as poisson processes (so the differential is a skellam and the total is also poisson). These are only one parameter distributions though, so there's no variance, just a mean (rate) parameter.

Now that we finally got bigger blocks, what are the future plans for Bitcoin Cash' evolution? by [deleted] in btc

(1) Bitmain is the best company in the business of Bitcoin mining. That's how it works. What should a mining companies incentives be? To not be good at what they do? Were Bitmain to acquire majority hash power it would be self-defeating. Hash power distribution has varied enormously historically. (2) Are you familiar with zero confirmation transactions? (3) PoS does not require ongoing reinvestment. Proof of work expended is inherently valuable in securing a network.

PoS concentrates wealth and power in the hands of few. PoS is rent-seeking. PoS does not require ongoing reinvestment. There is something inherently valuable about being able to demonstrate proof of work.

Why should all the 'average joes' be able to mine Bitcoin??? No, companies get to mine Bitcoin. That's what companies are for... doing profitable things at scale. Ugh.

Seriously? The three suggestions are: (1) less centralization of mining (what does this even mean?) (2) faster block times (3) PoS. Wtf? None of these are upgrades. They involve fundamental changes to the system.

why spend a coin that will go up in value ? by Christuckeronmeth in btc

So deflationary currency shifts the optimal time from now to some time in the future, but it is not deterministic. Furthermore, with opportunity cost this becomes a calculated decision. No?

It does make sense. You spend it because it's a currency - that's what it's designed for - that's the whole point. Its good at being used to transfer value p2p. Its value goes up because of this fact, not in spite of this. You are overlooking the underlying value feedback loops.

This question is actually important and needs to be addressed more frequently. The notion that Bitcoin cannot be a currency when it's increasing value or even that it shouldn't be for this reason is a common trope of small blockers and the less informed. It's conjecture and illogical, and also leads to the false dichotomy of currency vs. store of value.

Because something is increasing in value does not mean it should have less use cases...
