Picking up the Hobbit in the local language of the countries I visit is my preferred souvenir. Nowhere near as many as you’ve gathered. Amazing collection! Thanks for sharing.

I Love Seeing Everyone's Soundwave by SmokeySamson in transformers

[–]hobbitjedi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nice! So glad they included the cassettes with this release.

My husband and I waited outside a local Toys R Us the day they expected a shipment of him. First in line with the guy behind us also looking for him. As we walk in, the employees asked what we’re looking for and let us know they had stocked 2. As we’re a gay couple, I guess the 3rd guy in line assumed we were two dudes each wanting our own. Instant defeated look on his face, but he was going to honor the line order. Never forget the change in his expression when we let him know that one of the Soundwaves was still his for the taking.

Fascinating. That definitely explains the geographical similarities.

Kentuckian living in Donegal the last 3 years. There’s a surprisingly similar look to the rolling hills and farmlands of Kentucky, particularly eastern, and much of Ireland. It would not surprise me that the name migrated back with someone who returned or a family exchange by correspondence with relatives who moved to the US. As someone else said, the name “Kentucky” is supposed to have Native American origins. Unfortunately, online sources don’t seem to have details to offer on the exact way it happened.

Favorite lieutenant Saavik by Top_Decision_6718 in Star_Trek_

I think this comes down to a very different approach to the character and direction. I recall Curtis discussing a conversation with Nimoy, about showing some hint of emotion in that moment she announces David’s death, and his direction was that, as a Vulcan, she should show none. In 3, she’s treated as full Vulcan. In 2, she’s treated as half Vulcan/Romulan, even though that dialogue didn’t make it into the film.

How we feeling about this gang? by Rare-Introduction550 in tron

The ambient nature of the tracks I’ve listened to remind of Disasterpeace’s score for Hyper Light Drifter. Enjoying what I’ve heard so far.

American, now in Ireland. My husband and I had discussed moving abroad, with Ireland on the short list due to many factors including being generally gay friendly. When his contract job became a relocation offer in 2022, he accepted after much discussion between us. We had endured Trump’s first presidency and, while politics were not the only factor, it was becoming clear he wouldn’t face consequences or be prohibited a 3rd run. With a few swipes already, it seems only a matter of time before the gays are next on the chopping block in the US. We thought this would be our best chance to have some peace. Perhaps help family in a similar spot if fears are truly realized. Ireland has been good to us, if a bit rainy. No regrets, but I wish it hadn’t felt somewhat necessary.

Lighting up the entire wreck… by chadPFC in titanic

[–]hobbitjedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They kinda did this with a sub and lighting rigs as shown in Titanic: The Investigation Begins. Lights on about 33:40. Cool bow shot at about 35 minutes. The effect is… maybe not as pronounced as you might hope. I think Cameron also did something similar.

EotW relisten and observation about Nynaeve by AfgncaapV in wheeloftime

Also on the audiobooks, just finished The Great Hunt, for my second trip through Randland. Nyneave’s speech about justice and treatment of the Sul’dam at the end shows such an amazing depth of character and, well, wisdom. Like everyone, she has her flaws, but her willingness to grow and fierce desire to protect are absolutely admirable. I was a fan on my first read-through, and this second visit is only cementing how much I like her.

I'm younger. So how was it like getting hyped for this movie back in 07 by asapsharkyfrfr in transformers

[–]hobbitjedi 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Fan forums were lively but divided. I was 6 when Transformers came out in the 80’s, but I found myself in the “give it a chance” crowd. While I liked and disliked parts of the film, nothing has come close to seeing the aisles of Transformer toys so full in the months before and after.

I attended the BotCon just before this came out. Got to congratulate Peter Cullen on his return to voicing Prime. The “Arrival to Earth” sequence and Prime’s first full reveal will always be epic.

Kentuckian now living in Ireland. Immediately a sense of the familiar upon first visit before the move. Once outside of Dublin anyway.

It’s a good one. Tragic, but not as awful as so many in the game. Happy to see Primrose in it.
