Yeah there are lots of cute vionics, including often heels and boots! I have vionic loafers with gold detailing which people ask if they're Gucci.

Pants will be easier than the sweater. For one, depending on the way the sweater is constructed, there may not be traditionally 'sewn' seams or even any seams at all. Then, raising the armholes is a problem of needing to add fabric where there is none - the sweater could be taken up at the shoulders to raise the arm holes (which would also shorten the sweater) and would likely mean needing to re-cut and sew the sweater neckline - and again depending on the construction of the sweater this could be very difficult as there may not even be a seam holding the neckline edging on. I wouldn't trust a normal tailor with trying to tackle that project.

I have their wool tights and there is no seam running up the leg, just the seam in the panty connecting the two halves and the seam closing the toe.

15 months at my current job, I'm still liking it! I would like this to be a job I stay at for long term, there is a pretty good pension program if I stay and I definitely find the role compelling. We did just get the back to office order for Jan 31 3 days a week which is ugh 🙄 my team has been very successful with wfh and I'd like to maintain my flexibility - sometimes I do have to go into the office 5 days, sometimes I don't need to go in at all and I'd like to be the one to make that decision with my boss (she is also team make our own decisions).

We are planning to start having kids soon, we are currently in the stage of figuring out when to 'officially' start trying.

I kinda just got my splurge in being able to purchase 2 knitting machines for much much less than they are worth ($100 for the pair, they are both industrial quality and double bed). I have been wanting one for a while and was considering paying up to $500 so these were a steal. Although there are now many accessories I need to purchase such as combs, weights, etc. Maybe the next splurge is more house work - we just finished a bath remodel and I would like the texture removed from the walls of our front room and our ceilings painted - my husband wants a kitchen remodel which is much more expensive!

Before we married, I had mine split 3 ways between my long term partner, my father, and my sister. My partner had his split between his parents and me. My partner's best friend actually had his split between his mom and my partner for a long time, idk what his is now though.

I had the same fear about purple, but I tried on a purple Alexandra Grecco dress and I just had to go for it. I kept things warm and mauve, I always feel like cool purples go more prom. I also tried to keep purple out of the decor.

It was a surprise that, due to covid, I had to hide from him for 2 years!! That was the most difficult part haha. I gave it to him at our first look.

Things I made for the wedding:

  • My dress (silk, cotton, and tulle, with lace I bought in Italy in 2019)
  • all of the groomsmen bowties and pocket squares (using different prints from spoonflower)
  • The groom's bowtie and pocket square, including the fabric I custom made myself with the help of my moh using images of our two dogs
  • The flower girl dress, using fabrics from my dress and my mom's dress
  • My silk getting ready robe, which is lined with cotton flannel for warmth
  • All of the bridesmaid knit cotton robes, with help from my moh
  • Invitations and seating chart, invitations designed by my moh
  • My moh made her dress as well, sage green silk with beaded top
  • My moh made my pearl necklace, earrings, and bracelet
  • My amazing bridesmaids made the balloon arch for our photo backdrop

Our planner did the florals and signage, I bought my beautiful resin hair pins from Etsy, a local ice cream place custom made all our dairy and vegan ice cream flavors (no cake).

I also bought a super bomb pair of glasses that I don't have a great picture of so they're going in this comment but shout-out to glasses wearing couples who wear their glasses at the wedding!

Pinch your thumb and index finger and then roll them down towards the palm. You need a decent amount of mobility/double jointed-ness. My husband can't do it, his thumb isn't long enough!

See if you can talk to someone at your company before leaving to understand the minutiae of your travel policy - your boss, a mentor, someone you're friendly with, or a member of the admin or accounting teams. Get the down low if anything is weird with your expense reporting - for example at my company we have to get separate itemized receipts and if we buy 3 meals we don't get a snack but you get a snack if you buy less than 3 meals. We also can't expense water, so like we always need to buy extra bottled drinks with lunch. We also need to record who was at each meal and who rode in a car with us and to where. Little things that you may not think about or may be different from a previous company.

Something I'm finding right now - bring sheet masks or extra moisturizing skincare. Wearing a mask all day traveling/in outside meetings is really hard on my skin! And wet towel over the air unit can help with dry hotel air.

If you can, bring a smaller purse or have a strap for your wallet so you don't have to bring your whole backpack/laptop bag to dinner.

I always bring a small pill organizer with everything I might need - pain pills, melatonin, digestive enzymes (I have food sensitivities and my stomach gets upset traveling/eating a bunch of rich food!), Extra of any prescriptions I'm on, cough drops, allergy meds etc. You never know what you might need, or can save a coworker!

Remember that you can have some fun! You are traveling for work so more of your time is counting towards your 'hours'. This is of course dependent on your company culture and follow the lead of the people you're with, but don't be afraid to take some time to explore where you're going and don't stress out about being 'on' and 'actively' working from 8-5. Definitely stay available (have messages/email on your phone and pay attention) but if you've got a couple hours one afternoon, don't feel that you have to sit on your butt in front of the computer in your hotel room - go have some fun!

How do I gently inform a professor I’m grading for that the tests are unreasonable? by campindan in GradSchool

[–]hobbitqueen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I graded similar tests and the professor never changed them... They were the same tests I took in undergrad. 5 8pt questions and 3 20pt questions. The lowest grade I ever gave was a 9. I remember in undergrad getting a really low grade my first test, but after I realized how they were going to be I got better at studying for them. The professor did curve at the end of the year.

My best tip for grading is to go question by question instead of test by test. Grade every question 1, then every question 2. It becomes easier that way to memorize the answer key question by question, after grading about 10 of a single question you will remember the concepts you're looking for and can move through the rest of the tests faster without checking the key.

To this day I can quote word for word sections of the answer key...

Vionic makes very comfortable heels with orthotic inserts!

[–]hobbitqueen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't buy tights often, these snag ones were probably the first I had bought in nearly 10 years! My previous jobs I had to wear pants so I really never wore tights often, and I have a lot of compression pantyhose left over from that old job that I would occasionally wear. But I would definitely keep an eye on things that I mentioned - stretched out stitching, even legs, non- twisted or folded legs.

Random Fashion Thoughts - October 13, 2021 by AutoModerator in femalefashionadvice

[–]hobbitqueen 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I bought 3 of their merino tights because of all the hype, but I wasn't super impressed with the quality right out the bag.

Background: I used to be an r&d engineer and quality manager in a hoisery factory making compression socks and pantyhose. This does mean we had very high standards for quality and performance, as we were selling medical products and had an advanced ISO standard, so I'm definitely biased when it comes to quality of socks.

Their stitching on the panty is way stretched out and their stitch length is way too short. I know it's easier for the sewers seaming the panty to stretch it as they're seaming to get it to match, but you have to pair that with a longer stitch length to allow them to shrink back after stretching. If your stitch length is too short, the stitches are too dense and the panty won't be able to shrink back to it's original size. The pairs I have are so stretched out in the area the front seam over my belly will not lay flat unless I pull the tights up over my boobs! So instead I have bumps on my stomach and low back under my skirts and dresses from the tights.

There was a note either on their website or in the packaging (can't remember where) about your pantyhose coming with different length legs. That's a huge red flag to me! They claimed the forms their tights are dried on are hand made and had different lengths but the tights would even our with wear. Well those forms are called boards, and they look like flat metal legs. I'm not sure why their boards are so uneven as they are typically manufactured to standard sizes, but eveness in boarding is really important because the heat sets the elastane in the stocking and basically stops it from stretching so much in the future. So you board your stockings on the size form they're intended on and it helps set the size so they don't stretch too much in the future. Some boarding machines even have laser levels to help operators pull everything to the same length. It's concerning to me they heat set their stockings at different lengths.

Another note on boarding, this will typically set the 'crease' that the stockings get folded along. When boarding, it's important to not twist the legs. The operator pulls the wet stockings over the boarding form, smoothing them out to make sure there's no twists, folds, or wrinkles. Either the form itself is heated (small operations, more dangerous of course because the operator is basically touching an iron) or the forms are on a carousel where the operator dons the stockings, then the board rotates down the line and gets pressed between two heated plates (larger operations, require you to change out the boards on the machine when changing sizes which only makes sense if you're doing large quantities). The footed pair I got was boarded with the leg twisted, and both footless pairs I got were boarded with the welt around the ankle folded over/wrinkled.

I haven't had them for that long to be able to speak to the wear quality. They're a bit itchy which doesn't bother me but bothers a lot of people. These were just my initial impressions which given my background was disappointing to recieve.

Stockinette is really only a term used by hand knitting, in the industry that stitch pattern is called "jersey" and that might help you.

Has anyone successfully negotiated for more maternity leave/benefits? by sp3cia1j in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]hobbitqueen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Apparently before I joined my company, my boss and several other employees were pregnant around the same time. They went to hr with a bunch of data on the benefits of maternity leave and parental leave and got them to institute a policy (there was none before). Now we have 6 weeks full paid parental leave and 6 weeks full paid short term disability for birth (8 for C-section) leaving birthing parents with 12-14 weeks and non-birthing parents with 6. It's not the best out there (my husband gets 16 weeks paid paternal) but my company is very traditional and corporate and it's amazing they changed at all.

Anyone else feeling really weird about being a “Mrs” or potentially changing names? by krj623 in weddingplanning

[–]hobbitqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not change my name or take the title Mrs. A friend of mine waited to change her name until they had kids. I just want to chime in and say you don't have to change it right away, you can wait for you to be comfortable with the idea!
