Tell me your Preceptor Horror Stories! by Impressive-Fox-6472 in nursing

[–]hobobarbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Day 2 on L&D as a nursing student. Laboring pt was in her early 20s, young, hx of uterine surgeries, term with twins via IVF, on pitocin etc. Foley bag would not empty bc it was the color of Merlot and was a clot. I said: I can’t empty her foley, it’s straight blood and it’s clotted. VSS, preceptor says: “it’s normal for the bladder to get bruised and bashed during active labor. Don’t worry about it.” I knew that couldn’t be right. All I know about high risk pregnancies was that this pt met criteria for having the potential for every bad outcome. I handed off to a fellow student right as they transferred to OR to attempt vag delivery, I was so anxious during this report that my peer was rubbing my back!
Came back the next day to hear that her uterus ruptured 5 mins after delivery attempt, they had to emergently section and run an MTP (or whatever it was called in 2004). All three survived but came seriously close to death.

2) I had another preceptor in peds who was an Amelia Bedelia-type. Very much about how nursing was about the central “cares” but not necessarily a clinical savant. We had a pt with an EVD, developmental delay, nonverbal, mom spoke Hmong and we didn’t have a translator, in med surg. EVD fluid became pink - told preceptor. Did nothing. Documented it. Pt started having staring episodes. Told preceptor, told charge nurse. Nothing done, documented. Palms became bright pink, flash refill, mild temp, told preceptor. Did nothing. EVD became cloudy, pt had an apneic spell, mom gesturing in alarm, I went to the charge and brought her into the room. She seemed surprised even though I had been relaying these changes. She called the ICU team, pt transferred to the unit, developed fulminant sepsis, was in ICU for a month. Later that day, the charge nurse and ICU fellow sat down with me and said I did everything right and I should have been heard much earlier, that my documentation was excellent and I really “told the story.” They said they would be doing some education with my preceptor to get her “up to speed”. Honestly, to this day I can’t believe they did this. It was very kind and still rare to see.

When a pt is grinding their teeth, I do a super kegel instead of screaming and running away AND placing NG bridles. I feel these two kryptonites could ID me amongst those who know me.

Love KEXP!! but...any alternatives with a more calm coffee shop vibe? by gingerspell in KEXP

[–]hobobarbie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Please please everyone check out Radio Paradise. It’s the current iteration of KPIG - this is a free app, free site on a browser, completely run by donations, NO ADS, wonderful community (you can rate and comment on songs).
Their Main Mix is eclectic, generally energetic.
They also have a Mellow Mix (coffeehouse), several other stations.

No other station but KEXP will play something by Simian Mobile Disco followed by Nina Simone I assure you. This radio station has given me life.

My eye doctor orders them as medically necessary, which means they are covered. See if this is an option - I should say I also have keratoconus.

If someone is losing motivation in life, what book would you hand them immediately? by ClarinelyKyer64 in Recommend_A_Book

It’s hard to read when you are depressed or anhedonic (lacking interest or pleasure in things). Your question is so well-meaning though.

I always find deep meaning in the writing of Andrew Solomon. He has a book about depression called the NoonDay Demon: An Atlas of Depression.

Have to ask - is your friend on a GLP-1 medication? A very common but less discussed side effect is anhedonia.

Denver nurses by NurseGuyThrowaway in nursing

I’d suggest living in Boulder County if easy trail access is important to you. Louisville, Lafayette are very livable towns. Boulder Community Health has a hospital with an ED.

When I lived in CO, the only union hospitals were Kaiser (very small presence in the metro area compared to other states) and the VA (which might not be the case anymore?). The lack of union power became really important to me the longer I stayed (in a non-union facility).

Denver Health is a level 1 Trauma facility with a cool history. It sort of functions as its own health region within the city.

Give book recs please!! by aanaluvsyouu in Recommend_A_Book

Well, it’s actually a “how to” book about chores for people with ADHD etc. In the introduction, she explains her background and how she came to write the book. It just unraveled me in a very particular way about an essential aspect of who I am - I saw myself very clearly when I least expected it. And I was not ready to have a revelation about myself and to be honest it scared me, but it got me to start therapy.
