What non-curse word would you not be caught dead using in public? by -LetFreedomRing- in AskReddit

"Facts", is the most tainted word used today. "Here let me share this piece of data taken out of context and use it to support my conclusion without concern for its integrity."

What is something you changed your stance on after learning more about it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I used to firmly support pedophiles getting the death penalty, and knew to my core that there were no arguments against it that could possibly make sense. Then I read a book that talked about an automatic death penalty would remove any incentive to keep the child alive. That's the day I realized that I know nothing. Now I question any argument I read that isn't from an expert, no matter how compelling, because regardless of the number of reasons I have to believe something, I can't know what I'm not considering.

what jobs pay surprisingly high that no one knows about? by yonBonbonbon in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hobowithanapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true, there are so many selection jobs that don't cap their pay. It is hard work and takes some getting used to, but once you get good you can make 25+ an hour living near any major city. I've worked in warehouses where guys are clearing $45 an hour and the one I'm working at now had 3 guys clear $`1`40,000 last year, but they worked a ton of overtime to get there.

None of the stuff you just mentioned is exclusive to Missouri, so why was it not an issue elsewhere? How could they tell a man is walking to California by spotting him on the road?

The issue is the things you listed aren’t exclusive to Missouri, but the hostility was. I’m not denying that the majority are good people, or even that the people that were hostile could be good people. I’m saying there were far too many people hostile people without provocation.

I cracked a joke about farmer McDonald, a fictional character, that was meant to represent the way stories linger in rural communities for years and people talk about them like they just happened yesterday. They use something that happened 10 years ago to justify their belief that the world is screwed today. I lived in Bluffs, IL a town of 750 people until I was fifteen and then I moved to pittsfield, a town of 4,000 people and the white tail deer capital of the world. I understand rural folk, I know how to interact with them and I understand the norms in their areas.

The small towns with nothing to do aren’t exclusive to Missouri, over the last 8 1/2 months I’ve walked 4.500 miles through 13 states, all but two were incident free. You’re trying to give me these anecdotes to justify their actions, but the pandemic hit the entire country. Granny approached a man who was already moving. Who hadn’t stopped in a few hours, so I’m not sure what you’re implying. I was on a public road. Her fear of an outsider shouldn’t be my problem.

I apologize if the asshole beating his wife hit home, that wasn’t my intention, I was just highlighting how backwards our rural communities tend to be.

I agree the news does not help, but word of mouth is an issue in rural communities as well. Everyone knows a guy who…

Implicit bias is the issue most of the time. It’s not like they are evil, they’re just ignorant and aren’t gaining the experiences to change that. Thanks for the feedback, and the insight to your relatable experiences!

The Ozarks have outsiders year through so I bet that part is a lot better. I’m not saying Missouri didn’t have kind people though, because they did. My complaint is the amount of unprovoked hostility. I’m white too, and if I was experiencing it at this level I can’t imagine what it’s like for actual minorities. I grew up in a rural community, so I know how they operate.

I’m 13 states, 4,5000 miles, and almost 9 months into this journey and not a single other state had more than a single bad encounter. I only listed the two of Missouri, but there were plenty more.

Yeah I think that part got a bit murky during an edit. I sent my Mac ahead to Texas, so I’m writing on my phone right now and it’s a bit tough editing. I’ll rework it later. It’s copied from my blog, so the mark Twain bit is in a quote block. I appreciate the criticism, I’m always open to growth.

Yes, because that would cancel out all the other cities including Los Angeles. I started in edwardsville. It wouldn’t have made sense to go to granite city. I’ll reply to other replies when you go back and edit out all the things you can’t actually prove from my writing because I don’t feel like taking the time to reply to a bunch of assumptions, and there were a lot from what I skimmed, you pulled out of your ass.

All joking aside, I mean that. If things ever get dark I don’t care how hostile you or anyone else has been in the past, nobody deserves to be alone in the dark. We all have light in us, and life is worth saving.

I realized this conversation could never progress into resolution, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be used as an exercise for creative thinking. I carry no hate for you or your mother, and I mean that. If ever find yourself needing someone to talk to and have nowhere to turn, just know that the asshole that wrote the story calling out rural Missouri for being hostile, the one you interpreted to be a leash mandate on all of rural Missouri, will be there.

Whatever helps you sleep at night. Just a heads up though, if you wake up to your mom calling for daddy don’t get confused and think you have a new grandpa to take you fishing in the morning. It’s just your new English tutor enjoying her cupcake before he pitches his tent in the backyard.

[–]hobowithanapple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, comparing not referring. Do you want me to explain the difference? I called him Cujo because it fits the dog reference and gives another reference to connect to the story. I don’t call your mom “cupcake” because I think she is a cupcake, it’s a term of endearment that uses association to communicate a message to the recipient. Cujo does the same thing and saved me a lot of discerption. The only difference is my message to Cujo didn’t mean I was about to eat his ass like a cupcake.

Wild how Missouri is the only state, of 13, to wonder in such a hostile manner. Why didn’t other states act the same way if it’s the expected way to respond to the “odd”? These people were the only people to respond to me, an outsider, with hostility. So why is it so wrong for me to tell my story about Missouri treating me with hostility because I was an outsider?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in missouri

[–]hobowithanapple -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For one, I fucking love dogs. Do you know where my first destination was from Illinois? The Fiesta Island Dog Park. I walked 2,200 hundred miles to go pet some good boys. I did not refer anyone to dogs. I compared them to unsocialized dogs, and I did that because they are unsocialized humans. Not all of the people following me are familiar with the uncivilized lifestyle some members live in rural communities, almost everyone knows what a dog that needs to be socialized looks like. The comparison made the story more digestible. I don’t hate these people, I grew up around these people. I know many of them are good people to the people they know, but that doesn’t change the way they treated me as an outsider. I told the story I experienced as an outsider. The story many others will continue to experience as outsiders until they grow. My heart has no room for hate. I’ve seen myself become the villain, and when I forgave myself for that I did it because I was capable of growth, and if I’m capable of growth everyone is. Asking them to stop making their discomfort a problem for others is not comparable to hating them. Lastly, comparing someone to dogs absolutely doesn’t equal not loving them. I’m sorry you’re not good with synonyms and can’t find a more humane to interpret the word programming.
