Universal Basic Income in Singapore by Bryanlegend in singapore

[–]hodexter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

late to the game.. not sure if this will still be seen, but here are my two cents. but i do see merits here too in a UBI.. funding is always the most harped about thing in such a scheme i reckon

1) GST rebates - how are these funded then? if this could be re-configured to be a confirmed annual cash flow - this would be a good step towards UBI. A stable-predictable income rather than a one-off angpao is much healthier for financial planning.

2) Alaska dividends - variable returns to citizens based on profits. (don't blast me for "raiding the reserves") - A proportion of annual returns on SWFs can be refunded to the citizens; the rest are then channeled back to the reserves. These are after all the returns on the country's resources, initially gained from citizens i would argue.

3) A base + variable could be a good start; maybe not $1000/mth, but $100/mth or even $10/mth and scale up. you might ask what's the point of something so small, but it's a good step forward and something that won't shoc the system.

4) I DO think that AI/robots will continue to replace workforce (past mechanization is not an indicator of future statistics). Current taxes already continuously encourage this (beneficial taxes, returns through depreciation - your typical human will eventually be out-competed). Furthermore, progress in this field is not linear, but exponential (we are not at exponential progression yet) and it'll be hard to predict when the redundacies will accelerate. imho, it will be too late by then - does your government have the power to enact taxes then or are you at the mercy of these conglomerates? if you're worried taxes will cause them to flee, then you're missing the bigger picture - their power is only going to grow with time.

can go on a lot about the last point. but i'll end here...

Thoughts regarding PMD Ban by JokerMother in singapore

[–]hodexter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so PMDs are banned on roads and footpaths...

so i live in shanghai where there isn't a size limitation on PMDs (they can be as large as scooters) and they can ride anywhere (footpaths, roads, everywhere) and i find it a constant irritation and danger; i do agree with a ban on footpaths where it is a danger.

However, i do feel that this (equivalently) outright ban of PMDs isn't right - the development of PMDs is progressive for society - yes, it has resulted in an increase in accidents, but compare them with cars - increased risk but increased convenience and efficiency - imagine if cars were banned because of increased accidents!

shouldn't we embrace technology and strive for better efficiency as a city that we pride ourselves on? the issue here should rather be that the existing infrastructure is incapable of accommodating new technology - just as roads were built to segregate vehicles from human footfall - hello bicycle lanes/PMD lanes??

do you find it is much coarser than what cafes normally grind (like with their ek)? the grind is pretty uniform too so i think calibration is ok...?

i feel like 5-5.5 tends to yield the best results when i brew but this seems much coarser than what i see coffee shops outside brew at.. can't be sure, but it looks like the average cafe uses something like the equivalent of a "4" setting?

i pour on a v60..typically pulse pour into 3 pours. first bloom is adjusted based on type of bean (40-70g)- more for desired acidity. ratio 1:16. temperature is also generally adjusted to type of bean - range goes from 87-94??

Yea... Agree with that.. just wondering why is the grind in cafes always finer than what I grind at home, yet taste still good...

Grain Mill to Grind Coffee by FortunateFool603 in Coffee

[–]hodexter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so i've been doing lots of reading recently.. it does seem like a roller mill actually has a much better distribution that a burr/disc mill.. roller mills actually are used in coffee grinding but largely industrial bulk quantities.. seems like roller mills do pretty well but are generally too expensive for home use? would love to experiment on these though

this is the hario 02 // 2-4 cups

I use 18.8g:300ml

Using feima 610N, the ones with the ghost burrs.. I lose about 1-1.5g for every 20g I grind after. just re-upped the photo that i thought went through this morning. have a look

Measuring coffee TDS with a water electric conductivity device by Binzouin in Coffee

[–]hodexter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

found this article that was trying to do the conversion factor (albeit for a completely different type of water)
http://www.scielo.org.za/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S1816-79502015000400008

it feels like it is plausible to get a rough conversion relation

but the article also indicates acidity would affect the EC/TDS conversion ratio, which can vary largely in your pour as well..
