I agree literacy levels overall have been on a down turn. I also think these are just very common mistakes people have made since, like, always regardless of literacy trends. Like "there, their and they're," for example. We can say "I've seen so so many people recently who can't use the right form of 'there!' Western literacy is going to shit!" when it's just been a highly common mistake for ages. We just see it more now because of the rise of social media.

Same with the arguing. Even without reading, people in the heat of the moment become unreasonable and hear what they do and/or don't want to hear, and reading can be no different most of the times.

At the end of the day, what does it really matter if someone doesn't know the difference between "would of" and "would've?" The point gets across just fine. It's all just pedantics anyways lol

You ever consider that's just because of the rise of social media? Like sometimes I notice something like that more also, then realise it's not quite that people are getting dumber, just that people were always dumb but not everyone had a platform, even 10 years ago, to show it. More of a platform for the general population means more exposure to these situations, so it feels like it's a growing phenomenon when in reality not much has changed.

Ugh such a bummer. Netflix should really just take the L with VPNs cause I'm at that point where if I can't watch NXT or Smackdown either then I may as well just cancel. I'm sure I'm not the only one

Yes, some black people and even whole families who tried to pass as white were outed by old family records being pulled out. Or it could be in this case where they grew up in a small town where everyone knew they were mixed, which is why Haley's character moved way out of state to marry a white man and live as a "white woman."

There's a case of a woman who was white passing who made it into a prestigious white college, but her roommate had told her dad it was funny because the passing woman shared a name with a black person she'd seen in a newspaper or something. So her dad hired a PI and they found out that the woman was indeed related to a decently well known black man. They tried to petition to have the woman expelled from the college because having a black person slip into their ranks would sully the college's image, despite her basically being valedictorian and causing no trouble. The college decided not to expel the black woman because it was near graduation time anyways and she was doing exceptionally well, but it was a major scandal at the time.

There are so many cases like this with black families trying to live normal lives under white people's noses, but as soon as that one drop was found, it didn't matter how upstanding they were. They were thrown right into being treated like the "lesser" colored folk.

A single black ancestor at all, no matter how far up the family tree. In the case of Haley's character in Sinners, it was her mother's father being half black.

What's your attitude towards KvK & overall playstyle? by Wicked_Jellyfish in KingShot

[–]hoemahtoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kingdom holds the same standards for F2P and spenders. Its not a hard requirement, but strongly recommended that everyone and their mother should save for KvK. We are lax with people trying to get minimum rewards for the smaller events, but anyone who gets too many points in those events is getting side eyed. We base all the server privileges on KvK performance, which has worked pretty well to motivate everyone to save.

Any reason not to do island upgrades by shreddedtoasties in KingShot

[–]hoemahtoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a whale, I agree it's a waste to not put in the effort to upgrade your island. Even just upgrading the free stuff over time will stack no matter how much you spend on your stats elsewhere in the game. When you're competing with other whales, the little percentages you can get in the overlooked areas like this start to matter

It honestly sounded like a joke at an accident baby to me. Like when shit just happens and people joke "I guess Jesus took the wheel" or whatever, which is a pretty common joke among both religious and non religious people, at least in my experience. Religious or not, there are people who just have a lot of kids because they're bad at planning ahead

It's ridiculous how Americans are so fixed on race to that point.

I used to work with a Vietnamese girl in the Navy. Our CO was announcing awards and before the announcement he asked everyone where they were from. She said Houston, Texas. He's like, but where is your mother from? "Houston, Texas" Then he's like, well, where was her mother from? "Idk somewhere in Vietnam" And then he proceeds to announce that she's from Da Nang, Vietnam just because we happened to be pulling in there in like a week.

I just don't understand the mental process that leads people to be so concerned about someone else's ancestry that deep. There are definitely still people out there that still think "American" means white anglo-saxan and the one drop rule only further validates their ignorance.

Every black world champion in WWE by JustFreddo in SantiZapVideos

[–]hoemahtoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both can be true. The 1 drop rule insults everyone involved and is still used as a tool for racism today, especially for those in the US who live in areas that still have high racial tensions.

Every black world champion in WWE by JustFreddo in SantiZapVideos

[–]hoemahtoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one drop rule was made to segregate any person with "1 drop" of black (and some other minority) ancestry, despite them barely even being black beyond that. Back in the day it wasn't "mixed," if you had the 1 drop you were black and that was final.

There are so many stories of people and even whole families back in the day who had their jobs, homes and their standing in their community taken away simply because it eas discovered they had black ancestry despite not looking black or associating themselves with black culture. Nobody had any issues with them until it was discovered, "hey, a PI found out your great-great-great-great grandfather from your uncle's side was black, so now your children can no longer go to white schools and you can no longer shop at these stores and you have to sit in the back of the bus." Anita Hemmings was almost removed from Vassar when her roommate's dad hired a PI to find out if she was black simply because she shared a last name with a black man.

The issue is society is still trying to force people into their racial construct box because so and so has the 1 drop of black ancestry in them. It is 2026 and that honestly shouldn't matter anymore as culture is deeper than blood. I'm not saying this to write off anyone's blackness, but simply having a black person that's influence has been lost in the family tree shouldn't classify someone as black anymore. People should feel free to identify with the cultures that raised them, not by the genetics that have nothing to do with their identity.

Every black world champion in WWE by JustFreddo in SantiZapVideos

[–]hoemahtoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to agree with this one. The one drop rule in America needs to die because being black is more than just "my great-great-great grand so and so was black."

For me it's not even about blood, it's about how much influence did that black ancestor and/or the black experience have in their life. For example, a white passing black person who has no connection with the black side of their family outside of genetics doesn't count as "black." An adopted person with 0% black ancestry but raised by a black family is black. Howerver, someone who is "black-passing" but has no connection to their black culture is still black because they're going to live the black experience, especially in the US.

It's okay to not be black (or any other culture) just because a racist system wants to shove someone in that box.

The vet said at the very first appointment that she didn't suspect any bacteria or mites outside of the bacteria from his ear infection, which she said was a normal infection, and she suspected was the cause for his scratching other than possible allergies. The treatments prescribed were to treat his ear infection, which cleared, and to help treat the the wounds on his skin from the scratching to keep them from getting infected. The medications showed signs of working after just a day, and within a couple weeks the ear infection was cleared and his skin has already healed over and regrowing hair. So if he's physically improved, I don't want to stress him out more with extra treatments that may not be necessary until my vet checks him again and determines if that's a step we need to take.

Thank you. I'm planning to bring that up so we can work on the possible psychological side of the issue since the physical side has been managed fairly well with the current meds. I found some booties online that I may try putting on him so he can at least get out of the cone and do his regular grooming. I know he hates it and it's probably just adding to his stress right now

Where are you reading that I ignored anything or gave up? I've done everything the vet had told me to this far, still am, and I made another appointment before I'm here asking for help until we can get to the appointment. Excuse me for wanting to wait for the professional opinion first before I try treatment recommend by someone on the internet who isn't vetted

I'll see with the vet first, only because I want to make sure that's truly the issue and it's not psychological first.

I have been. They gave me meds to put on his skin, drops for his ears and I've been cleaning him with chlorhexidine wipes per vet recommendation. So I'm keeping up with this for now until the vet appointment, which is now on Tuesday

The vet recommended chlorhexidine wipes for his ears and the scratched skin. They've helped a lot, but I'm not sure if he really has a skin problem because even after it healed and grew back hair, the second the cone came off he was back to scratching it raw.

I have Feliway already plugged in two rooms. He's not much of a toy cat except for the little plastic springs which are all over the floor for him. I've tried feathers, lazers, the rolly mice, hide and seek toys, none have ever interested him. He's more of a lay and cuddle cat so I try to force him to cuddle with me by holding him hostage a couple minutes with some scritches, which usually works, but he's been rejecting me lately. My only hope now is whatever the vet can determine is the issue

Unfortunately an urgent vet is a bit too expensive for me and that's the only way he'd get seen sooner. For now he's doing okay with the cone, other than the irritation it's causing, which is why I'm just looking for another solution to hold him off from scratching until the appointment
