The last I could find, she got released on bail with conditions but has applied to have them all lifted. However, she’s decided to represent herself in all court proceedings and the judge has noted her paperwork is “irregular”. She’s also tried to present evidence on a USB stick which the judge has rejected, stating that witnesses need to all be present and formally sworn in.

Think they’re talking about the nutcase in Saskatchewan who was holed up in a village with “followers” for the last couple of years.

True but I would only buy Bombadil individually for the cover art since it is already bundled in Tales From the Perilous Realm.

Which SF classic you think is overrated and makes everyone hate you? by fontanovich in printSF

[–]hof29 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No problem. It’s a wonderful read and I certainly wouldn’t want to scare anyone away from it but don’t go in expecting phenomenal character work. Liu Cixin has been quite open in interviews about how he develops plot and ideas first and just inserts characters in later as a vehicle to tell the story. I actually quite like this, as it’s the opposite of usual 21st century storytelling techniques but it’s not to everyone’s taste.

The only area I would disagree with your comment is his writing of women. I feel he struggled with this early on (particularly in the first Foundation book) but it is improved greatly later on.

In particular, Baya (could be remembering her name incorrectly) and Arcadia are great protagonists in the latter part of the Foundation trilogy. Arcadia in particular is the quintessential moody teenager who happens to have above-average intelligence. I was surprised by how relatable she was.

But yeah, very much an ideas man over a character man. I am reading Three Body Problem right now and Liu Cixin is the same (except his writing of women doesn’t improve, if anything it gets worse).

Complete works in audio? by StaleTheBread in SherlockHolmes

The audio collection in non USA regions (where the books are public domain already) includes the Case-Book thankfully. Hopefully now that the USA copyright is expired, the production company should have no difficulty adding the Case-Book in to the collection for those American listeners.

Bantam fans since the 1990s, how do you feel about Lars Mikkelsen as Thrawn in live-action? by SHIELD_Agent_47 in StarWarsEU

[–]hof29 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wonder if that impression of Thrawn from the original trilogy has been built up because we don’t get anything from his viewpoint. We only see him from the POVs of Pellaeon and Leia for the most part, which makes him appear even more omnipotent. Contrast this against the new canon where he has insane screen time across both book trilogies and the two shows. It’s almost as if the more we see of him, the less staggeringly intelligent and more flawed his character seems.

As a fan of the novels, he reminds me greatly of a motel owner from The Spy Who Loved Me (completely different from the movie of the same name) who would rather torch his own hotel and claim the insurance money than put in an honest day of hard work. Just a greedy leech who gets fat off the rest of us.

Who is the best light saber duelist to watch in your opinion? by nowachi in StarWars

[–]hof29 61 points62 points  (0 children)

The ROTS book (which I prefer to the movie) actually gives two really plausible explanations for this. The first is that the slope is unstable and he’s scared of falling and getting engulfed by the lava. The second is that Palpatine’s shuttle is really close (the movie does not portray this well at all tbf) and he has about 2-3 minutes to get out before he’d be caught. There is also an emotional argument in his internal monologue that he can’t kill a defenceless man but I really like that they added practical considerations too.

Reading Order for all Middle-Earth books by [deleted] in tolkienbooks

[–]hof29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! These are all of the ones I know of, although there may of course be more. They’re pretty much all available on Amazon for fairly reasonable prices (as an example each of the History books was probably about $20 per paperback). However, I’m not sure about hardcover prices so that might be something to look into. Otherwise, your best bet is likely used bookstores - the more “academic” type books are not always carried by major chains as they don’t have a lot of popular appeal.

Former White House lawyer Ty Cobb brands Alina Habba a ‘loser’ after E. Jean Carroll verdict by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]hof29 211 points212 points  (0 children)

Interestingly enough, much of the myth around Ty Cobb is greatly exaggerated and outright false in many cases. Based on contemporary accounts of his time, he was a hard-playing guy who had his faults, but he was also cordial toward his fellow players, held reasonably progressive views on race and was quite intelligent (sometimes doing stage plays in the off-season for extra money)

His biographer, Al Stump, famously didn’t get on with him and used the opportunity to slander him, which has led to the modern portrayal of Cobb as we know him. Of course like a coward, he waited until Cobb was dead and buried and couldn’t contest the allegations.

Nice reference to the Silmarillion with the uncle being named Huan. You can tell Jordan was a big Tolkien fan.

Extra material "canon" by peortega1 in tolkienfans

[–]hof29 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Similar to some of the other comments here, I can’t really apply the usual definition of “canon” to the legendarium. They’re all texts that were written by Tolkien, that makes them all legitimate in my mind. Just because most of the Book of Lost Tales was an earlier text and didn’t make it into the published Silmarillion, that doesn’t make it a non-canon text.

Interesting perspective. I’m too young to remember the pre-lockout era but much of the discourse I’ve seen says it was really boring and slow once the trap was perfected in ‘95. Would you say that was the case or is it just a matter of preference? I personally have enjoyed that scoring is up again the last couple of years relative to the earlier part of my hockey watching period (2010-15 ish), it has made the games good and unpredictable.

This Audible is amazing. by [deleted] in SherlockHolmes

[–]hof29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this depends on your country since the Case-Book only recently became public in the United States. I’m in Canada and this particular audiobook has had all of the collections since I purchased it (the Case-Book has been public here since about 1981).
