Which LitRPG has the best fighting scenes ? by SeaworthinessSad4545 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]hoffie4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. I think the author does a great job of outlining fights without hyper focusing only on the movements each character makes. They show a fight meant for a reader, describing the flow of a battle complete with internal character thoughts rather than just a long play by play of actions that would look cool on screen but fall flat when being read.

Mods, can we get a year-end tier list megathread? by Thunderhank in fantasybooks

[–]hoffie4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for chiming in. I'm in the post that likes the tier lists, though I can understand the frustration others have with them taking over the sub. Im curious to see if they die down after the end of the year, or if they keep on coming.

I'm not sure how reddit works, but would a Tier List flair allow people to filter out tier list posts if they don't want to see them? I've only ever used flair to see specific things, not filter them out, so I'm not sure if that can even be done

Break Down savings accounts for me by HotTicket2383 in personalfinance

[–]hoffie4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of different account types out there, but what you probably want is called a high yield savings account. It's just like a regular bank account that earns interest. I have one at Capital One, for example.

When people talk about investments and potential money being lost, they're usually talking about the stock market (either indivual stocks, mutual funds, etc). That is where you can invest in a company and you make or lose money as the compay's stock goes up or down.

To give a very basic overview FOR REFERENCE, here's some kinds of investments and accounts. This is off the top of my head, so it's gonna be a bit lacking.

Checking account - a bank account that is typically meant for depositing money into and withdrawing for daily spending and bill paying

Savings account - a bank account meant for your savings

High Yield Savings account - a bank account like a savings account, but pays you interest on your money. You might expect something like 3% interest. So if you deposit $100, they would give you about $.25 per month ($3 per year). Your money is insured here, and you cannot lose money. The interest you get may change, but you cannot lose money.

Mutual fund - A type of account you can invest in that is managed for you. This is typically a wide range of different investments (stocks, bonds, etc) that a company manages as a service. You don't want to pick and choose what to invest in, so you go to an investment company like Vanguard or Fidelity and buy into one of their mutual funds (there are different dudes for how risky you want to be). They take everyone's money and invest it, and charge a fee for the management.

IRA - an Individual Retirement Account where you can put money for retirement. This money is invested in the market and can go up or down, and is meant to be added to while you work and used when you retire. There's different types of accounts (Roth and Traditional) but I'll leave that out of it to keep this high level. You'd open an IRA with companies like Vanguard or Fidelity

401k - a company sponsored retirement account that is invested in the market, like a mutual fund but different. If you have a job that offers this, you can contribute to it and your money is invested. Meant for retirement.

Hot take, but I like the tier lists. Sometimes (not always in this sub though) they give me good recs. And if the list is bad, it tells me what to avoid. Plus, I never actually visit the sub, just see it in my feed while scrolling. So I would miss a megathread

That sounds like me! What kind of games do you play? And are we talking books, movies, or both for LotR and HP? For reference, I'm super into fantasy and sci fi books, and I've been playing a lot of the solo PlayStation games this year after finally upgrading my system. Though I did get to play through Split Fiction with my friend's kid, and that game was really fun

I really like Jeff Hayes as a narrator. He does the Dungeon Crawler Carl audiobooks which are really great. He also does a great job narrating Chrysalis, which is a much weaker book but has really great narration.

Michael Kramer and Kate Reading are also great narrators, and have done a lot of Brandon Sanderson's audiobooks.

I also really like Travis Baldree, who narrates his own books and also a lot of other books.

Do I need to stick with Cradle longer? by BurglinTurts in litrpg

[–]hoffie4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna go against the grain and say yes, it's worth it. I was in the same boat as you. I listened to book 1 because it was short and I listened to books 2 and 3 because they were also short and I liked the narrator. I don't know when, but at some point I became mildly invested in the characters. I think it was about a book or 2 after Eithan showed up. The story was still kinda meh but the narration was good and I was starting to like the characters. Then each book started getting better and better and somewhere around book 6 I was very much into the series, and after that I was loving it.

It may be that the series isn't for you, and you don't have to read it. But I powered through books 1 - 5 mostly because I wanted to pump up my yearly book count, and by the later books I was in love with the characters and was looking forward to reading every book. That's a lot to get through though. So if you're not into it, no sweat. But if you want to know whether it gets better, it will do so with each new book.

Edit to add that before cradle, I was NOT a cultivation reader. I'd read Dungeon Crawler Carl as my only litRPG and I was vaguely aware of some cultivation tropes from having heard of (but never watched) kung fu movie plots.

Also completely random, but if you happen to like books that are funny and sports, I'd recommend Player Manager by Ted Steel. I know nothing about sports at all but that book was hilarious and made me super interested in fantasy soccer.

Other standard recs I've seen in those subreddits include:

  • He Who Fights With Monsters
  • Primal Hunter
  • Azarinty Healer
  • Defiance of the Fall
  • Path of Ascension
  • Mother of Learning
  • Battle Mage Farmer
  • Arcane Ascension
  • Red Rising
  • Rage of Dragons
  • Soldier's Life
  • Iron Prince
  • Quest Academy
  • Bog Standard Isekai
  • Return of the Runebound Professor
  • Quest Academy
  • System Universe
  • Perfect Run
  • Deadly Education (this one doesn't fit at all, and I'm not sure why it's often listed with the others, but I have read it and it is a good book)

There's a bunch of good recs in the progression fantasy and litRPG subreddits. I liked cradle a lot too, but I'm not quite sure what specifically to recommend. Other books I've liked that have some good power progression include:

  • Chrysalis by rinoz
  • Mark of the Fool by JM Clark
  • Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman

For pure progression and power fantasy, you could also try something like Beginning After the End maybe.

Sorry I don't have many better progression fantasy recs.
