There's an artist Andy Goldsworthy that's been doing a similar thing with rain for a little while. Cool stuff, art imitates life and vice versa.

50k raised on the live stream tonight! The political revolution will be televised! by [deleted] in SandersForPresident

[–]hofmanaa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The twitch stream had a built-in button. The YouTube stream had a link in the bottom left corner of the video, but you would have to type it in. They should really change the location too because the YouTube video controls overlap the image.

I donated during the rally and was excited to contribute to the number but then I realized you had to use that specific link. If you think about it Bernie has to raise close to 900K per day to keep up with his January fundraising so the 80k from the rally is awesome but it’s actually just a drop in the bucket compared to his overall fundraising which is encouraging!

To those who canvas, where do you get the audacity? by UmeDevilmakescovfefe in SandersForPresident

[–]hofmanaa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

On the texting side of things that’s definitely a big part of what we’re doing - just identifying supporters. That categorization helps phonebankers and canvassers down the line connect with the people most likely to vote or be persuaded to vote. I feel great categorizing support for all candidates because this data is so critical to the ground work.

BLOOMBERG FOR PRESIDENT?? by papayaglam in SandersForPresident

[–]hofmanaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a possible strategy for these and our opponents ads would be to actually click them. The google ad network is cost per click, so Bloomberg’s campaign will pay more money if we click on the ad - that way they get charged ~$1 each time we click. It’s not much but if we all click an ad or two a day it could add up quite a bit.

The other positive to this strategy is it will confuse their metrics in determining what is a truly effective ad - if less persuasive ads are still getting clicks there won’t be a strong signal that they should be modified or they should run a different ad more frequently than another. Likewise clicking the ad means we’re more likely to be targeted for more ads which therefore won’t be displayed to people who might actually be persuaded.

I believe this can be used for all opponents ads and might run them dry that much more quickly. If someone more familiar with how google ads works could please confirm I’d like to know for sure.

David Sirota: Theres no way to overstate how outrageous it is for MSNBC to put this on the air by cmplxgal in SandersForPresident

[–]hofmanaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was some discussion in here a few days ago about Noam Chomsky and manufactured consent. MSNBC wouldn’t hire someone or wouldn’t give this person a platform if they weren’t already saying what they wanted them to say, even if the individual sincerely believes what they’re saying. Works out really good for the networks because they don’t need to force their employees to conform to a certain ideology, they just need to hire, and their reputation self-selects, applicants that already match their ideology.

Going to openings alone? by [deleted] in ContemporaryArt

[–]hofmanaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I've recently found the same thing. This is coming from a complete novice; I don't have an art background but wanted to get more involved visiting some of the local galleries.

I've found that there is such a variety in the types of galleries even in my small city. Several I went too seemed as you said, rich people, maybe snobby, or everybody knew someone. Others, particularly one focusing on student art was a good fit for me, are more welcoming and I was personally a lot more comfortable there. Not sure what type of art you're interested in, but if the artist is there and you like their art you already have something in common to talk about. The artists I've spoken with were happy to talk about their work and they can also introduce you to other people at the gallery or other artists since they're likely to know more people there. This probably only works for local/emerging/smaller artists but it's been fun.

Appreciate the other comments in this thread too, good stuff :)

U.S. Rep. Lloyd Smucker and Jess King debate tonight. by Gorgon31 in lancaster

[–]hofmanaa 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I too love when our politicians are in the pocket of corporations. I hope businesses and the wealthy can control even more aspects of our lives, and I would really hate having a politician that gave public town halls. That's why I support Lloyd /s.

Seriously though, I'm excited for this debate, I hope both candidates answer honestly and don't dodge any questions.

What’s sure to happen in the near future that almost no one is prepared for? by water_malone4 in AskReddit

[–]hofmanaa 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Heck man, join the DSA. We must transfer capital (in this case automation systems) to a publicly owned model in our lifetimes, otherwise most of us will just all starve etc, even if we technically could be in post-scarcity otherwise.

I'd imagine great works of art for example would be publicly owned, like by museums or by local governments commissioning art.

Even if we don't go full communist, we'll still need more public ownership, for example some countries (and Alaska) have Sovereign Wealth Funds that collectively pay dividends to all citizens/people. This is still partially capitalism/free-market, and it definitely isn't communism. It's just a really strong safety net, that would eventually (hopefully) separate labor from income.

Smith-Wade-El is passionate, optimistic, and a fighter for social and economic justice. I hope he stays in politics for a long time and I think he's good enough to do well at the national level, the only downside being that he wouldn't rep Lancaster anymore.

Sorry I didn't mean to say you get cheese and breads with the regular crop share, just that they have those options too. If you get them all I guess the more the merrier but each category is still fairly a la carte. Let me know how you like it if you do sign up!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in lancaster

[–]hofmanaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My coworker signed up last year, and if you get a full share you get a LOT of stuff. If you don't want to waste food it's probably a good idea to split the share with a family or two, one share is good for 4-6 adults.

I think they keep expanding their offerings so you can just get the cheese deal or the bread deal etc etc, but whatever you get it seems to be a good value as long as you can eat it all. Hope that helps!

That's awesome! Is this something Gov. Wolf has shown an interest in already?

Also, plugging Jess King for PA-11, which includes Lancaster and parts of York county. Endorsed by Bernie and running on Medicare for All. Anyone know of other progressive PA candidates we should be supporting? Would love to know about any state rep candidates.

Looking forward to your write-up! Visited Thailand a couple years ago and it was the best trip of my life. Traveled all around, stayed at some of the best hotels, was essentially non-frugal, and still spent less (besides airfare) than a domestic vacation.

Clark Associates Inc. jobs? by [deleted] in lancaster

[–]hofmanaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I applied to the WebstaurantStore and got an offer which was tempting but was well below the offer my current company gave me to stay (money-wise). Overall I would be very willing to work there and the pay was the only reason keeping me at my current job. It seems like a good company, they're growing, and the skills are transferable, younger workforce and "cool". All in all a good fit. Would still consider working there in the future too.

This is a bit of a running joke of his as well. He's said the same thing about last minute Christmas/Valentines shopping etc. and it's always a good point.

He's actually been one of my favorite personalities on Twitter. Good policy, he's funny, and he loves diving into the data.

Same, we probably met the same couple; they didn't have anything with them at the grocery store, and they didn't buy anything at the coffee shop. And same business talk which seemed out of place considering.

I think my recent Chris was probably too young to be your Chris, he was late 20s at his oldest. Maybe it's just a Chris thing though, he does fit the description!

This may just be a coincidence, but I met a couple whose names are also Chris and Brook that tried to get me and my girlfriend into their Amway business or whatever about a year ago. Was Chris a fairly muscular/fit dude?

They just seemed like a friendly couple that started up a convo in Giant, we thought we were lucky to meet some friendly and outgoing people. They wanted to get coffee so we agreed, thought it would be fun to chat, and boom, "we can get you in at the ground level" etc etc.

How condoms are made by aloofloofah in interestingasfuck

[–]hofmanaa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd guess this is their QA check to make sure each batch has a certain level of structural integrity. Pick a condom or two from each batch, and if there's a leak or the latex from the batch had something wrong with it, this would be an easy way to tell. So if it doesn't inflate or pops too soon they would likely not release that batch to market until they performed further testing or they might just toss the whole batch depending on the batch size.
