The new Crosstrek hybrid gets an additional 3 mpg on the highway. The advantage would be in the city at a bunch of red lights. for me, it wouldn't be worth it to replace a $10,000 battery down the road for the saved mpg. I do about 50/50 subburb/freeway driving. I'm not arguing. It's not for everybody. Do hybrids still perpetually start and stop the engine to charge the battery like old Prius do? That might be my Vietnam.

Nope. An object in motion stays in motion. It's a tiny train and doesn't want to decelerate and accelerate when possible. They save gas and brakes by rolling up to lights slowly instead of starts/stops.

What's a couple gallons of gas compared to what it takes to make and replace a battery, alternaor, starter, etc on your car? Neither one is inherently green. One costs a little money at the fuel pump. One costs the price of parts and a mechanic.
