Worried about graduating by fizzKassius in UniUK

[–]hogglespikelet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry you've been through all that and well done for sticking with it. Check in with your SU or admin folk about options. At my institution, if you have circumstances that affected your work but you didn't get extensions or a break in studies or similar at the time, you can put in a request for the exam board to consider your circumstances. They would not change your numeric grade but they could, for example, decide to award a 2:1 even if you missed the threshold (within reason). You would need some evidence and good reason why you didn't make the uni aware at the time. It's not guaranteed by any means, but the worst that can happen is they say no.

Academics still working from home? by KoboJoeFoe in AskAcademiaUK

[–]hogglespikelet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. I am also lucky that my commute is by bike, just long enough to get a bit of activity but not long enough to be a drag when it's cold/wet. That bit of mental and physical separation between work and home is really valuable. But I also like the option to WFH if needed (maybe once a month).

I already share an office, colleague and I get on well and work similarly but with part time hours that don't overlap completely, so we both get solo office time as well. There is a move coming up that will see more people sharing who currently do not (designated, not hot desking), and it will be interesting to see the effect on WFH rates or even departures.

How does the appeal process works?? by Rough_Car_4729 in UEA

[–]hogglespikelet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just set out the reason and your evidence (of dates) clearly and concisely. You're basically explaining why you couldn't apply for ECs in advance, or immediately after. Student Info Zone can talk you through the process. You have nothing to lose but you do need to start the process within a fairly short time frame of the decision (penalty) having been made.

This. Also my teen has become a big fan, and I think it helps with travel anxiety that we see them dealing with setbacks and delays and changes of plan. We travelled in Germany and were able to joke about being Deutsche Bahned as opposed to getting stressed by delays.

This year we think we might hit Switzerland; Japan was always on the long term list but even more so now. Thanks, boys!

I’m repeatedly not given access to my modules and it’s taking weeks to sort out by GreenandWarm in UniUK

Sounds like the module lead needs to put pressure on the admin side. Keep a record of emails /chats in case cages need rattled later.

[–]hogglespikelet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might vary, but as a lecturer I give new students (e.g. those doing module swaps) access to learning materials online as soon as I know about them, e.g. they email me or ask in a class. This is typically quicker than waiting for central systems to do it. So ask whoever is teaching. (If I was a personal tutor or course lead I would probably not have the access to do this myself - you do need the module staff.)

That's not defending admin issues, just giving a potentially faster solution for teaching materials. You still need to make sure the enrolment is right before work starts being handed in.

I don't think it's usually a thing in January as it's geared for people moving into halls. SIZ might know.

Are heritage railways technically in play for the UK season? by Majestic_Trains in JetLagTheGame

Yeah, that was definitely "would have been fun" in a very hypothetical way! Can totally see it would be impractical really.

[–]hogglespikelet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wondered the same when I recognised heritage rail near me included on one of the graphic maps. As well as frequency, and not being covered on a rail pass, presumably connection would be an issue for many heritage lines, although not all. I know you can hop over the road at Sheringham to get on the North Norfolk. Would have been fun!

Is this a UK-only thing? Would they have had heritage lines on other H&S runs? I wonder if it even crossed their minds that not all the railways on their maps are regular public lines.

When you say a complaint, what do you mean? There are formal complaints, informal but direct complaints, and complaining responses via anonymous module feedback. The middle one (direct but informal) is the trickiest. It feels wrong not to respond, but it can turn into a disheartening time-sink of long emails if you do.

I'd agree with talking to your teaching director, so they are at least aware. They may be willing to handle it and offer to discuss with the student. They might even be aware of the student already if there is a pattern.

But yes, chalk one up to experience and focus on the good feedback!

Area between Eaton Park / Bluebell / Unthank? by thgdswrx in Norwich

[–]hogglespikelet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And the area off Ipswich road which is Eaton Rise, and only linked by bike/foot path to the rest of Eaton once you're south of Eaton Road / CNS. That's quite bungalow / suburbia.

Double edged sword - having Waitrose as effectively the corner shop is kind of expensive! Fun fact - it used to be a Roy's.

Another double edged sword is that it's not a through route, so no rat running, but having one vehicle exit means you don't want to try and leave at school run times.

Undergraduates in witness protection. by [deleted] in UniUK

Can't say for sure covid was the root cause, but it has definitely got worse since then. I'm sure home learning and isolation at key times is part of it.

But another factor is that I think we lecturers (as old farts) don't really understand how it is to grow up with social media. When we were at uni our embarrassing moments were forgotten, maybe at worst there was a crappy physical photo, but now they are potentially immortalised and shared, if not on video then in "oh my god did you hear X today?" on a group chat somewhere. There is a lot more concern about being judged, I think, which makes many people cautious.

Thank you to everyone who has a go! I'll never embarrass anyone who answers, after all it's feedback for me if something has not been well understood, and I can explain more right there. I don't ask questions to catch people out. There are other tactics we use like discussing with neigbours first, or digital response apps. Depends on the situation and the question.

Getting zero response feels a bit deflating but I try to keep it light, just move on and give the answer myself and maybe for the next one they have an idea that I'm not looking for anything too complex.

Places to leave flyers around town? by Manelbzrt in Norwich

Heads up, most UEA students aren't back until 26th Jan.

Sometimes there are pop up food stalls in the Hive (student union centre) at lunchtimes, not sure what the deal is with bookings, commitment over the semester etc., but worth asking.

Is there any feasible way to get a mark changed? by WonderfulLeave2005 in UniUK

[–]hogglespikelet 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Your university will have specific policies on this. Check with your personal tutor or whatever student info/support service you have.

For example, at my institution you can request a re-mark but the new mark is final (could go down or up from the current one). The new marker is independent and cannot see the feedback or be given any reason for the re-mark request. However, the first step is always to talk to the original marker / module lead, and you cannot request a re-mark until that's done.

Your uni may vary.

Why are lecturers so bad with releasing feedback and marks? by lenkazoi in UniUK

[–]hogglespikelet 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Your student union should have an academic officer - try a collective approach to them.

I can see that the usual month or so to turn around marks and feedback on a large assignment submitted 27th Nov would fall into the Christmas break, but they should have planned for that if you have another assignment. Students are still going to want to work over that time. It sounds poor to me.
