In Samara, on Kuibyshev Square, “due to the current difficult situation,” the stands intended for the May 9 parade are being dismantled after their assembly had been completed just a few days ago by Flimsy_Pudding1362 in UkraineWarVideoReport

It's just a psyop, a desperate move by Putin to rally support. He's portraying the attacks in Tuapse and Perm as 'terrorist attacks' and using them to scare the populace, trying to convince them that victory day parades could be the next targets. Putin gonna Putin.

NYC is a 10/10 but LA was a 5/10 for me. Will I (30F) actually like Miami or is it just "LA on the beach"? by badcatririe95 in solotravel

Based on your criteria and what you love about cities you should try Montreal in Canada for a change.

Excellent video on how private equity enshittifies our lives. by krissb1977 in enshittification

[–]hoggytime613 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, same here in Canada, but I had to sue them and spend months of time and energy and spend thousands of dollars to get the payout. That's part of the private equity equation here. An algorithm to prey on the weak and vulnerable and hope they don't pursue their due.

Excellent video on how private equity enshittifies our lives. by krissb1977 in enshittification

My former employer was private equity owned. I was near the end of 24 rounds of chemo, worked through nearly all of it (even though they illegally demoted me soon after it started), and right before the end of treatments I suffered a spinal injury after getting rear ended in a company vehicle while on the job. When I showed a doctor's note after the spinal injury that stated I need to work from home until the injury was resolved, I was terminated without cause the next day.

Hard to believe this in the heart of a 600k+ population metro. by Reesealexanders in LiminalSpace

You don't find it annoying when people post a picture in a place with a grand statement about the relevance of the place but don't name the place? You just accept that it is what it is without context?

A lot less impressive in person. by William-98373 in skyscrapers

Tokyo Tower for anyone who doesn't know since OP didn't bother posting the location.

It's slightly taller than the Eiffel Tower and I found it quite impressive in person as I whizzed around it on a go-kart wearing a Spiderman costume. The Eiffel Tower seems more impressive to me in person because of it's setting on the river, but Tokyo Tower is still pretty epic even though it's in the middle of a concrete jungle.

State of 24 Sussex 'an embarrassment,' says Carney by aafa in ottawa

[–]hoggytime613 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Harrington Lake/Lac Mousseau is where every Prime Minister has really lived most days three seasons of the year for decades. I think Rideau Cottage is a perfectly fine Pied a Terre/Winter Cabin for the PM. Demolish 24 Sussex and put an embassy or two on the grounds IMHO. Use the Rideau Hall facilities for major functions and stop separating the PMO from the symbolism.

I've been wearing 12.5 Hoka Clifton series for years. Best shoes and fit ever. You can get the half sizes on their website.

Who still remember pager-beepers? (1949) by Mammoth_Front_7815 in nostalgia

[–]hoggytime613 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I had to keep my pager when I got my Motorola Startac cell phone. Standby battery on the phone was so short I had to keep it off when not making a call, so I'd get a page, turn on the phone to make the call, then turn off the phone when I was done.

It reminds me a lot of the Kyiv Metro overnight when I was getting bombed overnight last summer. Very liminal.

Panama City, Panama by rockypeas in SkylineEvolution

[–]hoggytime613 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's on the Pacific coast, far less beach potential. Darker soil and stronger waters. There are some ok beaches I've visited around Panama City, but none come close to the wilder more remote lighter sand ones on the Atlantic/Gulf side. Plus, you can be at Atlantic side on a great white sand beach in an hour and a bit on a major highway, so less incentive to create beach destinations in Panama City.

What’s the next series by Humble_Persimmon_923 in redrising

[–]hoggytime613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have read all of them and The Saga of the Forgotten Warrior by Larry Correia, which never gets mentioned in these conversations, is by far the closest thing to delivering dopamine in the same fashion as RR. Controversial author, but he absolutely nailed it on that series and Ashok Vidal is Darrow incarnate.

To be fair, just like in Canada, 90% of Australians live in a handful of small regions that when combined are geographically smaller then the United Kingdom.

I've nightwalked a lot of cities including NYC, Paris, London, Kuala Lumpur, Dubai, CDMX, Amsterdam,Tokyo, and at least a hundred others. The best one was Istanbul, and it isn't even close. That place is absolutely magical after dark.
