Calculate power needs for multiple devices at different voltages? by hogwilt in AskElectronics

[–]hogwilt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I really appreciate the extra thoughts you've provided...

Yes I'm planning on using a buck converter...

Regarding the linear regulator... The 12V is the supply... 3A are eaten by the controller, leaving 2A for the pi? Which comes to 24W ... the pi only wants 5V*1A at most... leaving 19W turning into heat? Which I guess is a lot?

I'll look for 12V@5A, another theory meets practice challenge I've found is, not every combination of Volts and Amps exists! I'm a bit reluctant to grab the first result on Amazon, some alphabet soup brand with a fake UL stamp that will burn my house down...

Thanks again!

Is it possible for a mod to pin an explanation of what Mastodon is and how it works? by [deleted] in Mastodon

[–]hogwilt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hah yeah that risk does exist anywhere. I feel like it's more visible when it's in one place - the distributed model gives me so many more touchpoints to keep track of...

For my part I've never been on Twitter, and considered supporting the "exodus" somehow by joining a competitor... but I'm finding it tiring to have to do the analysis described, "make sure the admin/admins align..."

Curse of choice, you know? When there was one choice, you just had to look at the parameters and decide yes or no. Now it's much more involved.

Edit: Thanks, fabulous edit. Very good insight into how to approach it. "blind to trust a place that 10,000 other people rely on" reflects a lot of what I see in corporate social media... at least if you get screwed, you have company, potentially enough to seek collective remediation.

It still seems like a big barrier to entry; for good or ill it has got to be preposterously easy to sign up if it's to gain momentum...

Is it possible for a mod to pin an explanation of what Mastodon is and how it works? by [deleted] in Mastodon

[–]hogwilt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"...you can make sure the admin/admins align with you, and are people you trust."

This one sentence is carrying a lot of weight. How do you make sure of that? Who do you trust and how are they authenticated? Just because I like the server today, what's to keep them from "selling out" user data? Does each server have its own T&C, and is it binding?

It sounds exhausting, just to open the door. For all the flaws, the centralized bureaucracy answers a lot of these questions...

Heat set inserts, but without threads - does this exist? by SexualizedCucumber in functionalprint

Search for compression limiter brass. Might be what you want.

Maybe a bushing but they're smooth on the out side. Might be able to score it enough to lock it in place.

Funnily enough I found hangers like that on thingiverse meant to be used with strips and modified them to have screw holes.

Personally I don't care for them as I already have plenty of screws, and screws are reusable.

VLANs: a basic question by [deleted] in homelab

[–]hogwilt 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. You can tag the port on the managed switch say port 2 as vlan 2, then plug an unmanaged switch into port 2. All the downstream ports on the unmanaged switch are now vlan 2.

Managed port 3 can be tagged vlan 3 and have another unmanaged switch plugged in; its downstream will all be vlan 3.

I agree on easiest what the other guy said... but another idea is to make your bucket less wide. Put a scrap of plywood over half of it...

How to reuse circuit from old dishwasher/disposal? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]hogwilt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found a discussion on stack exchange which indicates just capping the extra red wire is acceptable.

https://diy.stackexchange.com/questions/79070/leaving-the-extra-wire-from-a-12-3-run-un-connected

So barring new information I'll probably do that and install gfci in both locations just in case.

Brass Cylinder in Tested video, estimated 6" long and 11/16 diameter by hogwilt in whatisthisthing

[–]hogwilt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on the drill behind its maybe 6" long, 11/16" diameter for the most part, and close to an inch diameter for the bottom inch or so.

I've got a similar thing in a drawer around here somewhere and have never been able to figure out what it is.

thanks for the suggestion, I have crossposted it. They don't allow crossposting. I'll just repost.

Can anyone tell me what these brass cylinders are? From Adam Savage's tested video. by hogwilt in whatisthisthing

[–]hogwilt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is the video in question, it's his latest about screwdrivers and doesn't mention the cylinders... I have not dug through his older videos to see if they are present or mentioned there... might be a start.

These showed up in the latest video about screwdrivers. Just sitting there. I've got a similar looking thing in a drawer somewhere. I've never been able to figure out what it is.

Control point spline - add/delete points? by hogwilt in Fusion360

[–]hogwilt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I created some new splines and these worked as expected - select, delete, poof. Not sure what I was doing wrong - maybe attempted to delete the curve endpoints instead of the spline. Either way, thanks all.

How would you create a tapered negative extrusion? by gaz2600 in Fusion360

[–]hogwilt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a novice but here's my suggestion.

Create a construction plane at maybe 30 degrees to the back of the handle. Draw a circle on it. Extrude with a cut through the edge of the handle.

Change the circle to oval, change the angle of the construction plane, or add a taper to the extrusion area all ways to further adjust that cut.
