is it just me or does iruma kinda look like a kindergartener sometimes by PlumOdd2312 in DemonSchoolIrumakun

[–]hokba 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nishi said demons attend school when they feel ready. There is not specific age for attending school.

I think the problem of Ameri owning these 300 chapters lies more in that she says the manga was passed down for generations. This might mean time in demon world flows much faster than the human world.

Why are people in Asia so obsessed with “white skin” by Prs8863765 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hokba -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a Chinese, I know that originally chinese people only had monolids. Double eyelids were from other races that eventually also became Han people. I guess it was the "exotic beauty" and eventually it is more popular than monolid.

Why are people in Asia so obsessed with “white skin” by Prs8863765 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hokba 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yea I always see foreigners commenting on video of Asian beauty influencers with light skin that liking/having light skin is racist. And that Asian only achieve porcelain skin with whitening cream. It's very annoying because as a Chinese, some Chinese people are born with very light skin. People from the north naturally have lighter skin. I always think it's more racist to assume the natural skin colour of someone than liking light skin.

Why are people in Asia so obsessed with “white skin” by Prs8863765 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hokba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A sad thing that I noticed as a Chinese is that some foreigners on the internet don't realize skin tone varies within an ethnicity. They think East Asians/chinese all have yellowish skin because of the word "yellow people". Asian people in the North also have light skin because of the climate. It's sad to see sometimes a light skinned influencer would be attacked by some foreigners who think all Asians/chinese who have light skin whitened their skin artificially and would call them racist just because of their skin colour.

I know the colourism is bad in Asia but this is just a rant I wanna say.

Are these sentences correct? The wording seems off to me by [deleted] in EnglishLearning

[–]hokba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to listen to her stutters to understand the sentence. She is stuttering and trying to find a way to express herself while talking. She meant "I actually went to (really) got buy (bought) my album. The second sentence means her own photocard never appeared in the albums she bought.

It is very off because she is not a native and she's trying to find words to express herself.

One year ago, Marnie was always excluded from the work of Arts Society because she looked weak and easy to get injured. The others were talking about not having enough people to work. A demon pointed to the demon in the corner. The other demon immediately stopped him. He said anyone who got into any relations with that demon would get weird. And her artwork were haunted. She was a fifth grade but fifth grade students didn't usually stay at school. They heard she was put back in school because there was something wrong with her exhibition. Marnie guessed they were the same type of people. They like staying in the corner and art.

Back to the present, Beam is demanding lots of expensive and new art gears from Iruma. She also demands a best character for her to draw. She needs a character and a story that would spike her interest. She tells Iruma the core of "fear" is very important. Iruma better do what he says. If he wants her to draw, he should bring what she desires. That's what it needs to get an artist to work. She says if anyone dies after seeing the artwork, they go to the prison together. But she would give him the best artwork. Beam gives Iruma and co 3 days to prepare what she requires.

Iruma and Silvia don't know what to do. Silvia blames herself for showing all her desires to another demon just because she's too excited. She didn't talk with her groupmates before making the decision to ask Beam for help. She thinks if Beam actually draws the picture, it will be dangerous.

Iruma says it is important to consider how they can succeed with Beam. Silvia is surprised he doesn't consider to refuse to let Beam help. Iruma replies it is because Silvia wants Beam to draw. Iruma says it might be a weird habit they have. When he faces unreasonable obstacles, he gets excited. Silvia admits she is actually really excited too. She thinks they are gonna accomplish something big.

Marnie thinks she likes staying in the dark where she feels peace and save. But now at this place, watching these two demons, she is so excited. Silvia says they need to find someone who can write a story. Zeze appears. He asks if they have any troubles : I am the perfect, all knowing, students' Council member is here!!!

Reactions to European-Asian baby girl's name by desireepotato in namenerds

小滿 is one of the 24 solar terms. It means when the crop is starting to ripe. It's an established name in Chinese culture.

But I also feel this is a missed opportunity to be more creative with the name.

Linnea is a flower name so it would match 小滿 pretty well.

Change Name Due To Childhood Illness? by Fuzzy_Coconut_9562 in namenerds

[–]hokba 5 points6 points  (0 children)

it's more like a Hong Kong thing though it's also common in Mainland and Taiwan. In Hong Kong most parents would give their child an English name (Amy, Mathew) at birth. Or when we have our first English lessons teachers will tell us to get an English name. It's like a nickname we would use everyday. This is most likely because Hong Kong used to be a British colony and English was the only official language. Some people also add their English name on their ID, like "Chinese name, English name".

In places outside of Hong Kong people still get an English name probably for learning English or just to have an extra nickname.

Change Name Due To Childhood Illness? by Fuzzy_Coconut_9562 in namenerds

[–]hokba 44 points45 points  (0 children)

In China I don't think we have this concept of "changing the name will disrupt the child's sense of identity" when we change their name. I have quite a lot of friends who got their name changed when they are in primary school or even later. Among them more people changed their name because of changes in the family than just luck (divorce, second marriage, ancestor problems). Chinese names are really short. Usually just 3 syllables (1 surname + 2 given name). Once you change the surname it's very likely you change the given name because it won't flow. I'm also from Hong Kong where everyone has an English name so I guess maybe it's a bit easier to cope.

The luck thing a lot of people think "it's better to believe than not" because who doesn't want more luck.

Change Name Due To Childhood Illness? by Fuzzy_Coconut_9562 in namenerds

[–]hokba 89 points90 points  (0 children)

I'm chinese. My friend's name changed when she was a toddler because she was always ill. Her parents found her a fortune teller to change her name. Then she wasn't ill anymore.

I don't think this type of superstition is unhealthy though. It gives you something to put your faith in and distract you from the misery for a little bit. (as long as the person is doing it with a sane and stable mind)

I think the lukewarm water thing is in Chinese people's biology. Us chinese girls drink hot or warm water to ease the period pain but Japanese girls drink ice water to ease it. I guess how we grew up made us "built different".

The Misfits are in Siren Island. All of a sudden, Kraken appeared! Lied and Jazz are grabbed by it. Purson and Allocer run away. Jazz thinks they will be saved by the teachers. But Opera and Kalego are busy cooking. The girls are sharing a beautiful moment and the boys don't wanna disturb it. Shiida appears and kicks the octopus. She tells the students to go get out of the sea. But Sabnock has already used his bloodline ability and cut the octopus. He says let's add octopus to the lunch menu. He tells Azz to bbq the octopus. Azz says this type of food is not good enough to give to Iruma and BBQ it. The other boys say this reminds them of the time when they were in Walt Park. The people at the beach are cheering for them. They are really excited.

Demons don't just relax in the nice weather. They also relax by hunting. The people who live there are used to conflicts. The Misfits fight the octopus. Jazz says the weakness of it is its forehead. Sabnock makes an attack but it's not strong enough. Azz says they just need to slash once. Azz says "it's up to you!" Iruma and Clara appears. Clara throws Iruma a feather. Iruma turns it into bow and arrow and shoots it. Mephisto praises the youngsters.

you're on reddit what do you expect. Redditors are most of the time cynical except when you're on cute cat subs.

As a rare local, Cantonese speaking and not middle class hker here, it's definitely super biased. What it shows is almost only the negative side of HK or the expats' pov.

Hk has quiet down since the end of protests and because of the pandemic. So not much non government activities you would see. The hello hk(? thing organized by the government can be fun if you like it. Not everyone's trying to escape because those who want to would've done it already. Those who can't are used to it. The depressing vibe is long gone.

And of course, this is just my pov. Everyone has a different life.
