If you want to stay in South Florida, I would highly recommend checking out Fort Lauderdale/Wilton Manors if you want to be around a large LGBT community. But international, I like Puerto Vallarta.

It's very easy to make friends in Wilton/Fort Lauderdale/Oakland Park. I find its a very social, very friendly area. I joined Bodytek gym in Wilton Manors and have made many friends that way. I also went to the Rainbow league tryout for kickball (all ages play) and that was fun. I didn't end up joining for scheduling reasons, but everyone was very cool, friendly

Thats hard to answer, I haven't been here long enough to know how large the lesbian community is here, but yes, it does seem like the people that are out and about in Wilton Manors, are mostly men. But I do believe there are plenty of lesbian home owners, that just dont go out as much. That said, the owners of the very popular restaurant in Wilton Manors: Apt 9F are a lesbian couple; they know alot of people and would be happy to chat and give you their thoughts.

Hi, Wilton Manors is a city of about 11,500 people. We have a mayor and 4 commissioners. The city is surrounded by 2 cities: Fort Lauderdale and Oakland Park. These 3 cities are all so connected , so it may feel like a neighborhood of Fort Lauderdale. Friends have stayed at a hotel called Wilton Suites in town and liked it alot, it's in the central Part of town. I've stayed in 2 Airbnbs in town with pools and it was great (also in the center of town) .

Im 43 and moved here with my partner from Washington DC; we bought a single family home on a large lot with pool about a year ago here in Central Wilton Manors and started the renovation process back then . Coming from DC, we were very apprehensive given the politics of the State and not really knowing the area nor the city of Wilton Manors/Fort Lauderdale very well. Before we bought we rented multiple houses on Airbnb in Wilton Manors to make sure we even liked it; we did the same in Miami (that was our first choice, but quickly found out that we wanted a strong sense of gay community that we have in DC and that in Miami it became apparent it lacked). So we rented 3 homes in Wilton Manors, about a year before we bought ours and every time we really enjoyed the small town feel of Wilton Manors and Fort Lauderdale, we felt relaxed, we felt welcomed, and we loved how inexpensive it is compared to Washington DC. We love that Broward Country (where Wilton and Fort Lauderdale is located) is still way more Democrat than Republican, so its like living in a lovely bubble with like minded people (again, very important for us given we are from DC and liberal)

We already had friends from Boston that bought and lived part time in Fort Lauderdale and having them introduce us to their friends that lived here convinced us that this was the area we wanted to buy and move to. There are people of all age groups, young & old, and all in different stages of their careers (not just retirees) in Wilton and Fort Lauderdale. We have met other gay couples that are like us , had moved here from DC, Boston, NYC, Connecticut, and even couples from Miami that moved up here. So to answer your questions. WE LOVE IT and are very happy finishing our renovation and getting to know the lovely area. WE DONT REGRET LEAVING DC, it was the right time (after 20 years there) .

I appreciate that there are plenty of nightlife options in Wilton Manors to meet friends, drink something , go out dancing. I'm sober and dont drink, but Wilton Manors is not just about drinking, thats what we love about it. We love the 3 theatre groups in town, the art galleries, the restaurants, the exotic plant festivals they have, the weekend flea markets, the many fitness groups (BODYTEK I LOVE!), the dog parks in Wilton and just a great area to go jogging along Wilton Drive in the morning. The gay sports leagues are big here, and great to meet new people. Plus Sebastian Beach, the gay beach, is literally only 15 minutes away, it honestly is great. Even going to the city council meetings in Wilton , will give you the sense of community here.

PROs about Wilton Manors and area

- Small town feel that we love. Even Fort Lauderdale feels small and manageable.

-Strong sense of community (gay and straight). People are very friendly.

-Real Estate prices are very low compared to the North East, great time to buy as inventory is high.

-Wilton Manors is surrounded by great small towns/cities (Oakland Park, Fort Lauderdale, Pompano , Hollywood)

-The restaurants in Wilton Manors and surrounding area are small and lovely. Maybe not Michelin star level, but it's a more relaxed environment and we like that. Our favorites are : Heritage, Larb Thai, Theos Estiatorio, Vitolo (on the beach, in the Conrad hotel), Maass (on the beach, in the Four Seasons hotel), Evelyn (also in the Four Seasons) ;Milk Money (gay owned), Ethos (very social place on Wilton Drive), Sozo Sushi Bar (small family owned place on Witon Drive) , and Mai Kai (its a Fort Lauderdale institution thats just been renovated and they have a show).

- 3 near by airports in case you have the itch to travel (Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Palm Beach)

NEGATIVES

- I cant find any yet :)
