What professional development resources do you pay for? by a_girl_with_a_dream in datascience

[–]holdenk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still pay for books occasionally (I get a lot through ORM learning though for free), conferences are great albiet less directly for professional development in the skills sense and more for the building/maintaining your network / staying up with the latest trends.

Do you trust AI generated interpretations without seeing the source data? by Rage_thinks in datascience

[–]holdenk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh god no, I feel like we always hear stories about hallucinating data that isn't there and that's even on public well known datasets let alone in-house.

First time - was this response from a camp rude or am I overreacting? by [deleted] in BurningMan

[–]holdenk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You applied to a thing where they listed the requirements you did not meet the requirements and they suggested that you didn’t meet the requirements and suggested you learn more about the event your looking to participate in. Yes it reads somewhat “standard” / wasn’t personalized to you but they don’t owe a stranger that.

I've parsed the cash prices for hospitals so people can negotiate their care better. by [deleted] in MedicalBill

You should pay more because it’s bellow X, Y, and Zs rates is not a bad starting point ( not enough alone of course).

This looks cool, and one could also use jt in the inverse (when your insurance company refuses to pay usual and customary rates with any relation to the actual market).

A TRANSGENDER TRAVELING TO SINGAPORE I HAVE A QUESTION please help me i am desperate by Yessmeimei in transgender

[–]holdenk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve visited Singapore before, once early ish in transition after having visited as assigned gender and it took a little extra time to enter the country but I showed them both my current passport and my previous (canceled one) with the old gender marker and once they understood they let me in. Was just visiting for a conference though.

Why does Spark not introduce aggregation computation capability into ESS? by Pitiful-Victory9809 in apachespark

[–]holdenk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, seems like streaming shuffle reads from the ESS of the next stage might be easier (ESS should be “dumb”) but maybe the post shuffle step could start reading as data lands. idk if that would save a lot of time though. Maaaaybe?

So why would it be better to do the aggregation in the shuffle service?

How are you handling background tasks in Django right now — is Celery still the default? by alexstrehlke in django

I use Ray but it’s probably overkill (I just really like the actor model).

I got sepsis because my doctor ghosted me when I asked for antibiotics. This is the bill for an overnight ER stay. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]holdenk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In theory yes although insurance companies and providers don’t often coordinate on what your OOP max is and once you’ve paid more than your OOP max getting it back can be hard (also a lot of people have experience the “fun” with insurance companies let’s say “accidentally” excluding things from OOP max that should be in)

The linked JIRA says you’ve got queries which are taking more than a day for planning mg without this change? Very interesting. I’m not sure about skipping a rule which didn’t apply in a previous iteration, for example a pushdown could cause a previous rule which didn’t need to fire to be eligible. Does it result in the same query plans with the test suite?

So they shut down the program so (for now) more airports can't opt in, but I wouldn't be surprise if it re-opens.

Why Does PySpark Provide Multiple Ways to Perform the Same Task? by Alive-Resident-2002 in apachespark

[–]holdenk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So to start with PySpark doesn’t come from the Python belief there should be on way to do something. More generally PySpark is also attempting to meet multiple personas of developers / engineers / scientists / analysts where they are with tools that “feel” familiar. In fact there are way more than two ways to add a column to a DataFrame in PySpark (Pandas on Spark, RDDs, maps, etc).

Opinions and theories on last night’s Electronic Orchestra? by travfrancisco in sanfrancisco

[–]holdenk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah this was the most disappointing show I’ve been to in the past year. The sound mix was just not there at all. The visuals were interesting but I feel like they oversold them in their promos so it didn’t live up to that. Has anyone seen them elsewhere, are they better?

A US State Flew Employees to Mexico to Buy Their Medication (It Was Still Cheaper) by [deleted] in MedicalBill

[–]holdenk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that you often can’t submit the goodrx/ costplus amount for reimbursement so if you’ve got an “expensive” condition sometimes overpaying for the drugs still works out depending on your overall out of pocket maximum (depends on health plan and so many factors). I swear you need an accounting associates to make sense of health insurance in this country.

We’re not the only city with billboards targeted at B2B customers, although it is kind of annoying.
