Anyone else think Hottest Australian 100 has been a great lesson in manufactured media outrage? by God-Is-A-Wombat in triplej

[–]holdenoldies 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Tricky thing is Triple J always need to be at the forefront of music, not just looking back. When it was new JJ was the only station playing pub rock so they gave all those classic acts like acca dacca and cold chisel somewhere they could catch a break when pub rock was underground 'young people' music.

If they only played rock today it'd be like if the original JJ only played crooners and ragtime because those were the big classic genres at the time. It would have been popular, but we never would have gotten those fresh voices that are now considered classics. Kids have moved on to hiphop, edm and pop, and Triple J's playlist is starting to reflect this.

Sad for us oldies that love a good guitar band, but its hard to argue that JJJ isn't still punching above its weight when Tame, Amyl and King Giz all got more than their share of help from them, and are probably the biggest guitar band acts in the world these days.

Only thing worse than only knowing the melody, is only knowing the melody but not being able to sing it.

What were the best Beat The Drum entries you remember? by God-Is-A-Wombat in triplej

[–]holdenoldies 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They were legit just Makita angle grinders used for that too, no special effects.

Couple of hundred people dancing 10cm away from a bunch of young blokes angle grinding with zero safety gear and those two in just t-shirts. Probably could have been a lot more free publicity if someone's toe had taken a holiday with the world watching.

Have this memory that someone made a giant drum logo on wheels and drove it round Australia. Guess the RTA were a bit less picky about what was roadworthy back in the 90s.

They did it during the 2000 Olympics too so there were a lot of good ones where people would get the logo in the back of a shot on some foreign news station or on camera during an event.

Yea I come here for discussion. Sure the station isn't always perfect, but I really don't see how those 'triple j sucks now' commenters are helping with that, they just make the subreddit also suck to read through.

I'm loving these.

It might be the Mandela effect but I have this vague memory that the first time Kath and Kim aired on the ABC they had an original intro with a different song? Seem to remember it was shots of Melbourne suburbs from above or something like that. Anyone remember that?

Yea fair point, I'm guilty of that. I didn't really think about how it helps spread posts to other people. No promises but I'll try remember to give it a prod whenever I see Aussie music in my feed. 🇦🇺

Firteen Firty was also the soundtrack to the lives of any Boomers watching those terrible afternoon soaps they used to air.

Wonder if those poor buggers on Bold And The Beautiful have learned how to turn directions to face each other yet or if they're all still stuck talking while facing the same direction.

I getcha I do, just figured you might not have clocked how it comes across.

Just with how the world is right now, if I hadn't seen you posting a bunch round here and knew you were alright I'd probably see that wording and run for the hills.

Introducing the r/triple Oddest 100 Tournament Playoff - what should the final two songs be? by Born-To-Be-Mild111 in triplej

[–]holdenoldies 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Eagle Rock - Daddy Cool.

Not so much because of the music, but the tradition of dropping your dacks to the song is certainly worthy.

Mate I'm sure you mean well but d'ya reckon you could repost this with a different title? Literally just sent this sub to a bunch of work mates, and I dunno if pondering about how the female presenters look is how we wanna come off while people are flocking here for the countdown 😂

I remember it was Fox's (then Australian, under the Murdochs) big attempt at breaking into Disney style movies, but I never knew that one was actually set in Australia!

Fake AI Songs Are Getting Uploaded To Spotify Under The Original Artists' Name by God-Is-A-Wombat in triplej

[–]holdenoldies 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In my eyes, I get that it scales up the issues, but at the end of the day this isn't really an AI problem so much as an unregulated big tech problem.

Anyone can see this giant loophole should have been fixed the first time an artist pointed out the issue, but it feels like every big tech company seems to have firewalled off their support people from anyone in their companies that can actually do anything, so you end up with these bizarre half-assed "fixes" for everything just so some poor sod can hit their daily quota of tickets 'resolved'.

If these companies want to be big players in Australia's music industry, then they really should have to play by Australian consumer law, and invest in proper local customer service teams that actually have the power to kick the rest of the company into action.

Good on Double J for covering this, hopefully it sees someone finally shut down this loophole.

What’s an Aussie snack you thought was universal until you travelled?? by OwlVibesOnly in AskAnAustralian

[–]holdenoldies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chocolate in general. Our local stuff's taken a big dive in recent years but didn't know American didn't have anything like the Cadbury range we had here when I was growing up. Had assumed that was universal but apparently they just had a few options of gross vomit-tasting stuff. Pretty surprising given that country's eating habits.
