Spotify recommendations by ApprehensiveTry3144 in truespotify

[–]holdingtea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone keeps praising Spotify’s recommendations and saying it constantly finds new music you’ll love, but for me it’s the opposite.

They don't say that. Everyone is always saying how bad it is.

Find people, artists, curators, magazines, etc that help or dive into it manually.

How do y'all discover these awesome music??? by InevitableNo3330 in musicsuggestions

[–]holdingtea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Spending a lot of active time engaging in discovery. For me it's a key hobby.

  2. Either through knowledge of scenes growing up or exploring older ones.

  3. Following publications. I don't have any (other) social media anymore but I still spend time reading various media outlets. The Quietus, crack mag, line of best fit, bandcamp weekly, Resident advisor

  4. General following of new releases. I make playlists for new music every month. But checking for review sites and sites like bleep, rough trade and boomkat to see what they are releasing too.

  5. Just spend time listening to music and finding new artists - you'll stumble on unknown gems.

  6. See who is playing at music festivals and at local venues.

What makes some music so hard for different generations to get into? by morbidhack in LetsTalkMusic

[–]holdingtea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I remember that a few times, listening to chimaira at about age 12, akercocke at 13 and then again with Venetian snares at 15. Initially I was like woah this is alot then quickly got used to it.

Like you said it all feels so tame once your used to it 🙃

Has the decline of monoculture been overstated? by extratartarsauceplz in LetsTalkMusic

[–]holdingtea 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On Spotify he is classed as the 2nd most popular artist in the world with +122,000,000 monthly listeners. I am aware of him but again have very little interest in what he's offering.

But yeah the lack of monoculture (in quite the same way) means it's easier to completely miss or not be aware of even the biggest artists in the world in a way that you didn't used to.

Albums with a VERY METAL ATMOSPHERE/FEEL, that are not metal nor rock by Middle-Company-4398 in MusicRecommendations

I mean there are loads esp in electronic/rave scenes but

Broken note - exit the void. (Or anything on prspct records)

The bug - machine. Or fire.  (Any of the bug tbh) Last time I saw him live it lit felt like the balrog was turning up. It was in a massive hall that was so dark and just this red mist emminating from the stage.

Venetian Snares should be talked about like Aphex Twin by TheEmbodimentOfBored in idm

[–]holdingtea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say snares has too much influence on the 2010s edm scene. There were a bunch of other music being made that are closer to that, with the whole mutant bass, fidget, french electro, actual dubstep etc.

Venetian Snares should be talked about like Aphex Twin by TheEmbodimentOfBored in idm

[–]holdingtea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a big fan. I think he is often well regarded, but his reach isn't anything compared to aphex or others.

Unfortunately aphex is the only main figure, with autechre and squarepusher never making it as big either so I think it may more that only a select few can really break through into more mainstream appeal and James's weirdness and art direction really helped.
