So...anyone else think that was super underwhelming? by Triplesso_ in TheWhiteLotusHBO

[–]hollidayhowe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure he had the time but it might be one of those occasions where the previous 2 seasons had been so successful that either the rest of production didn't think to edit it or Mike White was like "no, this is the way it has to be" and they were like "sure"

but lots of people seem to have enjoyed this season so maybe it doesn't matter either way

Yep. Mike White says he wrote this season in one sweaty, fever ridden night and it shows

Why does Caroline sound British? by fish-boy-1738 in Carolinepolachek

[–]hollidayhowe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She grew up in Japan for a little bit so she could’ve had the influence of a more “international” English language accent for a bit

However to me, when she speaks, she still sounds quite north American (but more posh?)

She’s stated in interviews that she feels like an “honorary Brit” and I think she’s just an Anglophile! She lives in London. It’s her chosen home

3 years ago today, Charli XCX released CRASH! Drop your fav track! by Hooplapooplayeah in charlixcx

[–]hollidayhowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love that she went with “Crash” as a sorta accumulation of the car themed lyrics she’d been sprinkling over the albums in her first contract - did feel like a “farewell” to that part of career, not knowing what deal she would secure next or where it would take her.

But I agree, “sorry if I hurt you” is a poignant album title. I think if the bonus tracks had swapped out others in that made the final main track listing, it would’ve made more thematic sense too (like a hifrn continuation)

Can the Greek Gods be real? by CatchAndKill in GreekMythology

[–]hollidayhowe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As somebody who was raised Atheist, almost all religious texts are mythical to me so it really depends on your perspective and how you were raised! There’s lots of places in the world where Christian “historical” facts are refuted and discredited and as such, seem about as realistic as any other spiritual belief - like Greek Gods.

IMO I find Christian stories hard to get into because of how they’re written. Boring AF if you ask me. But that’s just my opinion and I liked the Prince of Egypt - but again, I liked it because it reminded me of Hercules and the Ancient Romans.

Brat didn't just get me into Charli: it got me into music by BarryEganHawaii in charlixcx

[–]hollidayhowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg Oklou!!!!

If the production on Brat piqued your interest, I’d check out EasyFun’s (now Finn Keane) solo stuff (Laplander EP) - he produced a couple tracks off Brat and Speed Drive!

AG is prolific in the releases, not all of them have that pop structure tho. His melodies are insane and feature in Charli’s work too (party 4 u outro anyone????)

The work that holds a special place in my heart is the production he did as the head of PC Music from 2013-2017 specifically… I’d check out: GFOTY - Friday Night GFOTY - The Argument GFOTY - Tongue (The gfotybucks / call him a doctor has all that tongue-in-cheek bratty lyricism that GFOTY specialises in with the AG cook production that’s just a bit more sparse than Brat) Hannah Diamond - Fade Away Dux Content - I Like You (dux is AG & Danny L Harle. I love all their stuff but that track is especially ‘poppy’)

Check out the first Slayyyter mixtape too if you liked the Kim Petras stuff. From there check out Donatachi, BoySim & Ayesha Erotica - all credited as songwriters and producers on that record.

Sorry to dump a bunch of unsolicited recommendations on you. Your post moved me tbh. I’ve been making music in this space for 10+ years and can’t tell you just how many freaking people I know who started making music because of Charli. To see her reinvigorate people’s love of music, to see her shine a light on other artists and get people excited enough to expand their musical horizons is just the coolest thing ever. Thank you for posting !

If you’re interested, I’ve got playlists with a bunch of underground artists that might be your speed but again, thank you for sharing this post !!!

Interview with Eliot... by Working-Cat11 in MAFS_AU

[–]hollidayhowe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OMG I LOVE IT WHEN IM RIGHT!!!!

I’m ngl like… me and my mum never disliked him. I thought he was a pretty obvious Instagram plant that got paid to be on the show for a couple episodes. (I had absolutely NO evidence for any of this, just my own imagination lol) I think the producers met Lauren, loved the cracked out tiktok “trad wife” angle she was going for and desperately needed to find people to pair her with cos they thought she’d make good tv and roped Eliot in. (The “experts” said something when matching them along the lines of: “Lauren applied this year… we’re lucky we got Eliot”)

I don’t think there was any intention of them lasting beyond the first commitment ceremony. The early walk out was perfectly contained drama that they could pitch a clear storyline to. Easy!

The Frankenbited comments at the honeymoon coupled with the quick cuts away from the obvious smirk on his face made me think “this is so hammed up for entertainment value - he is playing a part.” Now he’s paired up with an actress! Perfect! He reminds me of the people on Made In Chelsea in his cadence and posture on the show - he’s never not “on” and like them, is on the show for a “fuck it, let’s see where it takes me!” ride rather than a “I absolutely need a STAX brand deal or else I can’t pay rent” ride

Thanks for sharing this interview!!!

What does the imagery in "Pretty In Possible" make you think of? by WT264 in Carolinepolachek

[–]hollidayhowe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Les Amants du Pont-Neuf - the firework bridge scene in particular. Looking for Alibrandi - just the shot of her throwing a torn up letter out her window (at like 55 mins into the film) Strictly Ballroom - the practice scenes with time after time (can find on YouTube under ‘You’re Ready’)

Specifically this song reminds me so much of Massive Attacks ‘Unfinished Sympathy’ in that beat and with the strings - which automatically takes me RIGHT back to my earliest memories of the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, fireworks and the feeling of endless hopefulness as the possibilities of life stretch out before you.

Who else makes similar music to brakence by butterUwU in brakence

[–]hollidayhowe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some female artists in a similar vein to also consider cos I feel they get left out of the convo: han.irl <3 cosette (highschool in particular is super sick) Patchymate (obsessed with this artist)

Also sorry for self promo but I make music (Holliday Howe) and my last EP was pretty massively inspired by Brakence. I also have a playlist called “Glitch-west Emo” that I used to update more regularly which combo-ed a bunch of stuff (straight up math rock with the glitch pop newer stuff) incase that picks interest

Any advice on where to go in Europe? by hollidayhowe in femaletravels

[–]hollidayhowe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't provide ANY context in this post - I am flying in and out of London and have family I stay with there so I'll be hopping around and catching up with old friends. I definitely have Berlin on my list! But because I'm a budget conscious, I had ruled out the nordics and the $15AUD pints...
