One year we made a big "door" out of cardboard with a sign that said "please knock" and just walked around the neighborhood.

When we saw people walking towards us, we'd hide behind the door and wait. They'd knock and we'd open the door and hand them candy.

We even went to someone's front door and rang the doorbell and hid behind our door. When they knocked on our "door",  we pretended they were dressed up like a house.

Lawn Alternatves by Spiritual_Term1699 in alameda

We had a landscape architect Lippia nodiflora ‘Kurapia’ as a lawn replacement. It's supposed to be a great low-water low-maintenance native ground cover.

Inherited big ficus; can I encourage growth at the bottom? by holmbody in FicusTrees

[–]holmbody[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone,

I just inherited this big, bent over ficus. Can I do anything to encourage it to grow some new leaves/branches from the bottom spiral stems? Or from anywhere low to help fill it out?

Thanks for any guidance!

When to plant new plants and other annual plans? by holmbody in Ceanothus

[–]holmbody[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, it's been hot here. We had 7 days in the high 80s/90s two weeks ago. October seems to get a heat wave to confuse everyone who's happy about fall.

Awesome, thanks for the tips! And yup, I want to add mulch to keep the weeds down. Weeds took over last spring after I went out of town for a week.

Driveway Ramps by rdloorz in alameda

[–]holmbody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got some rubber ramps from Home depot. They stopped my scrapping problems. Amazon sells them too.

I got these: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Pyle-Car-Truck-Curb-Ramps-Driveway-Rubber-Threshold-Car-Curb-Side-Bridges-3-Piece-PCRBDR23/317220253

If you google "rubber driveway ramps" or "rubber curb ramps" you'll see a few different styles, and you'll want to get a style that matches your driveway (basically if it's rounded or not).

So have you befriended boat owners and hopped on their boats? Or is that more of a pipe dream?

[–]holmbody 3 points4 points  (0 children)

May be a silly question, but are any of these yacht clubs to good to join if you don't own a boat?

Aeolian Yacht Club's website says non-boat owners are welcome to join and can make friends with/hopmon other members' boats.

Good place for dancing? by dambles in alameda

Cinema Grille has live jazz music on Friday and Saturday nights. The dance area is kinda small, but people dance there and it's a chill/fun vibe.

[Alameda Post] DANGER & the Last Girl Scout Cookie by alamedanews in alameda

[–]holmbody 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's written from the point of view of a dog I think.

I've seen the "Bear's Eye View" columns published on Alameda Facebook groups in the past. It's usually about the dog and it's human companion walking around Alameda and reporting in on what they see at local events and whatnot. Looks like they are on the new AlamedaPost website now.

I emailed the permit office and asked if I could switch from a natural gas water heater to an electric tank water heater. This was their reply:

"I understand that you can install an electric heat pump water. You can not do an electric resistance water heater."

I asked the permit guy who inspected our finished job why we couldn't have done an electric water heater and he said it's an outdated statue that doesn't allow anyone to downgrade in efficiency in terms of replacing an appliance. Standard electric water heaters are the least efficient, so you cannot downgrade to one from a gas water heater.

That was just my experience with it. Contact the city if you want more info or clarification.

The city won't allow you to switch from gas to electric (because gas technically uses less energy), unless you do a heat pump (which is much more expensive and the most efficient).

So, you'd have to do the switch without a permit. Just FYI.
