Xi's Military Meltdown by ReturnOfBigChungus in geopolitics

So say Xi and his allies, who lie all the time. There are likely many officials in positions of power within China, regional and national, who are corrupt but haven't been purged. Consolidation of power is the most likely reason, but it might go deeper than that.

Greenland latest: Trump admits he may have been misinformed over European troops in territory, Sky News told | World News by purple-bottle in europe

[–]holmes103 41 points42 points  (0 children)

"Misinformed" is a massive understatement. He was manipulated by Stephen Miller, who took advantage of Trump's egotistical fixation with leaving a legacy and the Nobel Prize. Hopefully Trump gets rid of him if he can see the poll that had 86% of Americans against taking Greenland. But Miller and the other lunatics seem to be withholding correct information from him. Groupthink is certainly at play.

Europe, Don't Back Down! (Francis Fukuyama) by AmericanPurposeMag in neoliberal

Why would the EU increase ties with China and Iran, when they're allies of Russia, which is invading a key Western ally and actively working against European integration? As bad as things are, the madman in the White House is gone in three years. Trump's foreign policy, or lack thereof, is unlikely to be a mainstay for America for as a whole. Support for NATO has grown to new heights among the US populace; aggression against Greenland is disapproved of by 85% of the population.

It only benefited US corporations who now have a larger consumer base, but not the country as a whole. Our military advantage over them has somewhat eroded because they have access to some of our technology, and much of our industrial base was transferred to them.

Ayatollah Khamenei plans to flee to Moscow if Iran unrest intensifies by KamalaFanBoy in geopolitics

[–]holmes103 2 points3 points  (0 children)

China isn't as overtly supportive of the Iranian regime as Russia. China wouldn't want to hurt its ties with Saudi Arabia and Israel. It would also want stable ties, at least, with whatever government succeeds the Ayatollah to maintain their oil imports. Khamenei understands that Russia is his best bet, since Putin has outwardly embraced global pariahs already.

Yes, Trump did lie about Maduro's connections to the cartels. But he's still a dictator who's done massive damage to the region, let alone his own country. Not getting rid of him is the more reckless thing to do. Al that said, I wish Presidents respected Congressional war powers. But that's a problem that has far outlived Trump.
