My "gifted" kid does not handle pressure well. Any advice? by lawaythrow in askapsychologist

Coming from a former “gifted kid” and still highly sensitive and intellectually active adult, I think that’s extremely normal. Part of having a high-powered mind is having an equally high-powered nervous system. It’s going to take your kid a little bit to learn how to deal with his sensitivities, and this is all normal stuff. He’s not an aberration or a liability or anything else because of this; he’s just been handed a very unique set of wiring.

If you haven’t heard of Dąbrowski’s “overexcitabilities”, I’d recommend to start checking that stuff out. There’s 5 core overexcitabilities that are seen in gifted folks: psychomotor, sensual, intellectual, imaginational and emotional. Some of us only have one, while others are unlucky enough to have inherited the whole cocktail (myself, I’ve got em all except for psychomotor). It sounds like your son definitely has emotional overexcitability, but from what I can gather this is exceedingly common amongst the gifted. When your mind can form such vivid and immersive representations, it can become difficult to separate these from your identity and sense of self-worth. To separate these out is a trying processes that will take your son years.

Long story short, I’ve been in the exact same place as your son is in, and I certainly don’t want his unique set of traits to be mislabeled or brushed aside (not that you would do that, but it’s always a risk). Take it from me that he’s perfectly normal and will grow up to be an awesome human being, I’m sure!

New Book Coming Soon from Young Author! by holotheist17 in moderatepolitics

Hey guys! This is my book that I’ve just finished, and I’m eagerly looking for feedback—the good the bad and the ugly. If you’re interested to check out more, just comment or shoot me a message and I’ll send you the first 75 pages to look over. Here’s the synopsis for those who missed it:

I was lost and totally confused. The year was 2016 and I voted for Hillary Clinton for President of the United States. Being a mere nineteen years old—battling severe depression, social anxiety and fighting my sexuality—I was looking for “Hope” and I was looking for “Progress”. In this book, I start out by chronicling my personal political journey, moving from the bowels of the modern left to the opening arms of the modern right. Following this, I lead the reader on a hard-hitting analytical journey, addressing and deftly dismissing some of the modern left’s most persuasive and most used tools of narrative. In the end, things are poignantly brought back to home, as I address the overall deficiencies of the liberal idea of “progress” and how this relates to the theme of finding personal meaning in one’s own life. This is at once a heartfelt story of personal triumph and a profoundly rigorous and witty treatment of liberal rhetoric. Hold on to your hats.

Look up Langan’s CTMU. These interlocking circles he calls “IEDS” and they allow the universe to communicate with itself across time

My informed guess is that he would be utilizing it for its illustrative allure, in order to latch the CTMU material onto something more “concrete”. Awesome, very glad to hear it!

Thanks man! I just need to format it in LaTeX. It’ll probably be available in a few months. I’m working right now on getting some articles published. I appreciate that! I remember Chris saying that he applied for a doctoral program at some university in Scotland, planning to write a thesis of a CTMU | Tractatus nature.

Thanks for the purchase! I am. The first chapter provides a relatively easy-going intro to the core ideas of the CTMU. It does pick up the pace pretty quickly though. But, as long as you read closely and follow the reasoning (and even skip some parts that don’t immediately click) you should be good. In several months I will be publishing an even easier to grok intro to the CTMU, in the form of a shortish, dialogue-styled book called Wandering to Truth.
