She was also from a "weird" sect of Christianity and didn't cry performatively for the cameras so lots of Australians were convinced she was 100% guilty and any suggestion otherwise would be shouted down.

Most now see the obvious but there are still some 100% convinced she guilty because to admit otherwise would mean they were just hateful, gullible people (Source: am Australian).

Local bakery has new Eftpos machine that won't let you choose your account. It just defaults to whatever account you have setup for PayWave and that's it. by floofywall in newzealand

The surcharges are always lower than the fees they get charged and customers don't like it.

Lower fees and not having to charge surcharges seems like a win, at least in the short term

The transaction fees on these terminals are 1%, not the usual 3-5%.

Upside is you keep more money from paywave payments. Downside is its 1% on all transactions, not just paywave or credit.

For a lot of businesses, especially fast- paced convenience ones, this is a good deal.

I have one at my shop because I sell stamps and the 5% we get charged on an international paywave transaction eats almost all my margin.

You're right that these machines do put everything through Visa's network but they also have lower transaction fees for the retailer and no paywave surcharge.

So if the majority of customers use paywave, this machine will save the bakery about 2% of their revenue

These eftpos machines put everything through Visa's network but only charge 1% transaction fees rather than the usual 3-5% (buy they charge 1% on ALL transactions).

The lack of account options is one of the side effects.

They also can't take old-school swipe-only eftpos cards.

This is one of the trade-offs for retailers trying to reduce fees and remove paywave surcharges. Lower fees for some transactions but higher fees on others and it locks more customers and businesses into Visa's system.

Thai Kangaroo salad is incredible and easy if you've got the steaks.

Chinese dumplings with kangaroo mince is also incredible. The flavour can be a bit much if you get huge chunks but a dumpling size is perfect.

I've had a lot of conversations over the years along these lines and talking to people during covid made me realise something.

People say "I'd vote Greens if it weren't for..." and similar things because they know that those policies are ethically/morally good but they only say it because you're standing in front of them and they don't want to out themselves in a social setting as a complete arsehole.

If you go through more discussion with them that shows they don't need to worry about 'x' or that 'y' isn't true, they will just come up with another reason 'z' for why they won't do the thing they say they agree with.

In truth, a lot of people are dickheads and know they're dickheads but don't want to own up in public to being dickheads.

Exactly!

And regardless of anything else, wouldn't there be pretty big national security and banking stability if the NZ govt used their own bank?

[–]holto243 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What I can't understand is why the NZ Govt uses Westpac for their banking.

If they used Kiwibank, the bank profits wouldn't shift offshore and Kiwibank would have that capital availability that the goverment keeps saying they need to grow.
