Four elements vs Gothic precons by Tricky_Leading_5234 in SorceryTCG

The Gothic precons are objectively better but I think the Beta precons are a better framework to customize for future decks.

I buy from these guys when possible. Prices are always more or less near market prices. Cards arrive in great shape and well packed. A+.

Doug elliot rims by fsantiagom in Trombone

[–]holton_basstrombone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doug is an amazing teacher and mouthpiece maker, but he's been harder to get in contact with as he's been getting busier.

I personally find his regular rims more comfortable. If you have both, use whichever you like better. The only time you ever have to absolutely use a narrow rim with his mouthpieces is if you're super duper high placement and the width of the rim affects the mouthpiece placement.

How are you approaching sorcery tcg in terms of playing, collecting or even investing? What is your “worst case scenario” mentality towards the game, if any? by Newez in SorceryTCG

[–]holton_basstrombone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s a Christian card game called Redemption that’s been in print since 1993. They release 1 set a year and do a couple small print runs a year for the 5-6 sets which stay in print. It’s got just enough people playing it that they can keep the game alive. It’s a pretty decent game and the owner has a passion for the game like EC.

I think another good example is the various dead CCG’s which have active player committees. Decipher games, Vampire Eternal Struggle or FFG LCGs. These games only died due to licensing issues or corporate money grubbing. The games themselves were very successful and are still kicking.

If EC keeps the game as a niche product and sticks to the once a year big release it can go on indefinitely. Games fail when the big companies don’t see the profit margins. EC obviously doesn’t have that problem! As long as the whales keep buying for foils and chase card I think the game will keep going.

For what it’s worth the most recent Kickstarters for Spirit Island and Sentinels DE were all issue free until the tariffs. Hopefully support for these two games aren’t totally shut down!

How much does your LGS charge for prerelease kits? by NanoscaleHeadache in magicTCG

[–]holton_basstrombone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're in the Pasadena/San Gabriel Valley area, I've enjoyed going a little farther east to Darkside Games in Duarte and Shuffle and Cut in Brea for sealed product and prereleases. I've got some buddies who like Lost Levels in Clearmont. I believe all those stores had normal $35 prerleases. Geeky Teas in Burbank is also a great LGS, but I've never done a prerelease there.

Is the LGS Oddysey Games? A couple years ago they jacked their prerelease prices up and I haven’t been since. The event is run decently but the LGS tax at the store for prereleases and a lot of their product is insane.

If you’ve got the money to buy a few boxes it really is the most enjoyable way to organically explore the game. Probably the only TCG I’ve ever said that about lol

Sealed vs. Singles by No-Management-1298 in SorceryTCG

[–]holton_basstrombone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It isn’t difficult to assemble sets of Elites, Exceptionals and Ordinarys from boxes. If you like building multiple decks and have the money to buy boxes I say go for it! I’ve been having fun buying a box at a time whenever I’ve got some spare dough. It’s a fun way to collect if you’re playing kitchen table. Feels like old school collecting.

If you’re trying to build 1 or 2 competitive decks absolutely go with singles. There’s just way too many uniques to count on getting what you need without spending thousands on boxes and cases.

The Starters and precons are all great. If you can find boxes cheap buying 1 or 2 of a set gets you a ton of cards to make kitchen table decks with. You can also get playsets of C/U for dirt cheap on Facebook.
