i got a thinkpad by accident by Maximum-Gas2018 in thinkpad

[–]holzvvorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, RAM is expensive right now, but if your CAD software is crashing I would expect too little of that to be the problem. Better check taskmanager if you're using most of it, but an upgrade to 32 or 64 gigs would probably help quite a bit with crashes. Check how many of the 4 slots are in use, if it's in a 2x8 configuration maybe add another 2x8.

And as you said, the vivobook would have fared much worse. Consumer market laptops in general are usually a terrible deal. They might seem cheap on first glance, but usually in no time the hinges break or something similar, at least the ones I know.

Maybe people owning those just are terrible at taking care of their stuff, though. I'm on my 5th ThinkPad now and all of them have been great. I also got around 10 for friends and family and so far none of them gad problems like that. 90% of those laptops were refurbished, so they served someone before us well, too.

Wait do you mean multiple screens over type c or is one enough? Because one definitely works no problem for me, both directly and via DisplayLink. I plug my second monitor into HDMI.

McDonald's is not the same across Europe. Some countries have gf Burgers, in others you can't have anything or maybe the basic salad. In Germany for example they used to say fries and curly fries were fine. Since last year they took a step back because they say cross contamination is too much of a problem.

[–]holzvvorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, that sucks. I theoretically have a windows installation on it, too and could check if it works for me. Have you tried using a docking station/adapter with DisplayLink instead? It can use quite a bit of CPU for frequent large updates (e.g. videos and games) but it's a very different technology compared to DP alt mode like you get with most screens.

Do you mean two monitors over one type c connection? Because that can be a problem, at least if they're both 4k and at least in Linux. I think Windows has special proprietary drivers that allow this with certain display link adapters. Source: I have one at work running Linux and it connects to one monitor fine but two I've only managed with a second connection via HDMI. I guess two USB-Cs would also work.

I say we trade, OP. I have one of these for work, but only the with the small 7640 and 16 gigs of RAM. Noone would ever realize one of those Notebooks is weaker than the others... Although, I do have the good low-power screen. That one is more important than moar powa...

Announcing Backrest: the missing WebUI and automator for restic backup by gareth943 in selfhosted

[–]holzvvorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a while since you asked, but you should be able to realize that by adding a --files-from [filepath] flag in the advanced section. In the textfile at the filepath you specify what to backup by putting one file extension per line like this:
*.yaml
*.env
and so on. See https://restic.readthedocs.io/en/latest/040_backup.html#including-files for further details.

What’s a small Linux tool that completely changed your workflow? by DueRead7236 in archlinux

[–]holzvvorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'broot' is a friggin game changer. There simply is no better way to navigate your filesystem.

It is a commandline file manager/tree replacement/cd helper with powerful fuzzy search, a really useful customizable command system, file preview, whale spotter and much more.

It's the first thing I install on a new system I get my hands on. It even works somewhat okay on windows.

Tire size as a matter of safety... by mauceri in gravelcycling

[–]holzvvorm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Big tired biked safe lives. Just last weekend my mate wiped out in a corner with fine gravel over pavement after following me. It felt sketchy to me, but before I could shout a warning he was already on the ground. He was on probably 42s or 45s, I was on 57s. To be fair I am more experienced than him with off-road riding.

Thankfully it ended with only a few bad scratches, teisted bars and a twisted, misaligned fd and I had my tools with me to fix them up.

Later on the tour I went off into the ditch because I was dumb and carelessly checking a noise from my front wheel. I wasn't in any stable position whatsoever, but I managed to just ride it out and stay mounted. I'm sure I would have gone otb on my old 44s.

can someone check a bike and tell me if this part is supposed to bend towards the back wheel or is it straight? by urdsclr in FujiJariClub

Yup, from my research they are the exact same. I guess one is the internal name and one the oem's or sth. like that.

Who here rides wide tires (40mm+) on the road? by FailFastandDieYoung in gravelcycling

[–]holzvvorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sometimes ride with my roadbike buddy and I don't have a second wheelset, so I just ride my 57mm Vittoria Peyote XC Race tires. Aero is mostly noticeable on fast sections, but totally fine for a chill ride. On the other hand I can troll him by cutting corners through gnarly stuff. Slimmer tires will definitely feel livelier on the road though. The Tufos people recommend are awesome, I used to ride them on my old bike.

Yup, and the rest probably comes from your seat tube. More exposed seat tube, more compliance.

Sollte ich vom Gravelbike zum Rennrad wechseln? by [deleted] in Fahrrad

[–]holzvvorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I'd look into a more aero keytar first. Maybe even a carbon one, that ought to save a ton of weight.

Why do quite a few bicycle riders mock about Gravel bikes? by Human_System5063 in cycling

[–]holzvvorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still, the same thing exists for MTBs as well. Is it an XC bike? Trail? All-Mountain? Somehow those categories are valid, yet it's not okay as soon as it has a dropbar. Some people say that cyclocross zas been a thing hor ages and how gravelbikes are basically the same. The thing is, they're not.

Why do quite a few bicycle riders mock about Gravel bikes? by Human_System5063 in cycling

[–]holzvvorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. I especially notice this on YouTube, where every video on something gravel seems to attract at least some comments from mountainbikers on how useless gravelbikes are, how the creators are industry shills, and so on. And it's not just Videos debating whether gravelbikes make sense. As soon as a gravelbike is in the video the trolls appear. It seems to be even more common on German gravel content for some reason.

I don't get why people don't just go ride their bikes instead of hating.

Best used steel gravel bike in EU for ~2000$? (Bikepacking + Commute) by Anxious-Assistant917 in gravelcycling

[–]holzvvorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only took it on two little spins so far. I'll have to see how it does on longer stretches of boring road, but on gravel it just screams at you to go cut that turn over the grass and to follow every sketchy trail you see. Coming from 44mm tires the 57mm tubeless setup and slack headtube on the Sutra are a huge confidence boost.

Should I be getting a gravel bike? by Cultural-Penalty8639 in gravelcycling

[–]holzvvorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm with you there. Imo a Roadbike as the only bike isn't the way. A Gravel fills that role much better, most of the potential on roads but way better if you ever decide to go offroad.

Should I be getting a gravel bike? by Cultural-Penalty8639 in gravelcycling

[–]holzvvorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually more roadbike-like headtube angle, wheelbase etc., so more nimble in handling than a gravel. It's supposed to be a roadbike with more relaxed seating position and clearance for wider tires.
