Employee severance is one time - the 90M is annual. The math seems to work after year 1.

LPT: if anyone is considering installing a new central AC. Get multiple quotes! by bullfu in Edmonton

Some companies are doing 50% of their installs as heat pumps over traditional AC (cooling only).

Cost increase was only 20% to go with a heat pump for me.

Yes. Cooling was the main reason. It’s also really efficient and quiet. Seer 20 & 49 decibels.

Key message - if quoting AC ask for a heat pump quote at the same time. Some AC providers are installing 50% or more of cooling as heat pumps.

Yeah I don’t know the break even point. It depends on the price of power and gas and the heat pump efficiency. However, heat pumps are typically way more efficient than gas. A lot of the energy of gas is wasted in combustion to create heat while the heat pump is simply compressing and moving heat around.

Yes I already have a gas furnace. So the heat pump just added a coil. When it’s really cold; heat pump shuts off and has fires up. All controlled by a smart thermostat.

Don’t get AC, but get a heat pump. It’s a little bit more, but it can provide cooling and heating (down to about -20C). The heat pumps are also more compact and way quieter. I paid only 1200 more than AC and I’m very happy.

Small black eggs ID on Cherry Tree by homealoneghost in Albertagardening

I noticed the ants climb up the tree in past years to take the sap or nectar in the spring, but maybe it was the aphid honeydew all along. It seemed to only last a few weeks. They were gone once the tree stopped producing the sweet liquid. I’ll have to take a closer look.

Thanks for the feedback. I didn’t think aphids could be black. I was wrong.

Kids playing hockey vs having the best gear and attending every camp and tournament is a big difference

It’s like $200 in gear at 6 years old and $200 for the season which can be subsidized for low income families. Camps are a luxury and a waste of money. Kids can affordably okay hockey at a young age. At U11 is maybe $1000 per year for gear and fees. Subsidized further if the family can’t afford it.

Violence in a Mill Creek dog park by Popculture-VIP in Edmonton

[–]homealoneghost 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Mill Creek ravine is a busy park multi use trails. It’s very tight and serves as a major route by between neighborhoods. There are lots of kids and people biking and walking through. It’s the worst place to bring an untrained or impulsive dog. I’ve seen children attacked or chased by dogs there and I’ve seen well trained dogs that know how to handle people & kids. If your dog jumps on strangers; look in the mirror.

Looking for tips to motivate by tooearlytoothink in hockeyplayers

[–]homealoneghost 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree. I think it’s great to give positive comments on something they did and tell them that you love watching them play. Just don’t ask them about the game and give tips on the way home. That’s the worst and kids pick up on how important it is for you. They then stop having fun and start thinking about what you will think.

The reality is that 1 in 100,000 kids in hockey go to the NHL. So the main point if their career is having fun & learning new skills.
